Episode 5: Full Sprint

“…What is this?”  

When Rindou reached the main street, the situation had completely changed.  

“A Team, engage the beasts ahead! B and C Teams, split up and search for and eliminate the monsters! Stay in your teams; do not act alone!” 

“””Yes!”””  

When he first saw the scene, the players had been at a disadvantage. But now that he was back, another player had taken command. And from a glance, it was clear the players were gaining the upper hand.  

(…..That female player is in charge. Does that mean she’s ranked A or higher?)  

Most players typically worked solo. While some formed parties, disputes over item distribution were common. It made party play a minority. However, in situations too challenging to handle alone, a temporary commander would be appointed to lead efforts to resolve the issue. 

Commanders were required to be at least A-rank. Which explained Rindou’s conclusion about the woman’s skill level.  

“Player Kazaki! It looks like we’ve suppressed the monsters in this area!”  

“Thank you! But don’t let your guard down. A Team, maintain vigilance in the area. B and C Teams, switch to a wider range search and elimination!”  

“A wider range?”  

The male player reporting to her looked a bit puzzled. But he was quickly startled by another report from a female player.  

“Ayane-san! We’ve got sightings of monsters to the north, east, and west!”  

“What?! They’ve already broken through our encirclement?”  

“Three directions…….. If that’s the case—”  

As the player referred to as Ayane Kazaki was deep in thought, she caught sight of a figure sprinting at the edge of her vision and raised her head.  

“You there! Stop!”  

The one running was Rindou.  

“There’s a hospital to the north! I’m heading there!”  

“Wait! Who… Who even are you?”  

Without answering Ayane’s question, Rindou dashed north at full speed.  

(Damn it! Of all places, why does it have to be north? My sister Kyouka is hospitalized there!)  

Rindou’s sister Kyouka had been attacked and gravely injured by monsters during a previous stampede. She still required hospitalization. She couldn’t escape quickly even if told to flee.  

“Please be safe, Kyouka! I’ll save you no matter what!”  

Sprinting through the deserted main street, Rindou soon spotted several monsters ahead in his path.  

“Okay, I caught up!”  

At his shout, the rearmost monster noticed him and stopped. As it turned around, Rindou swung his broken sword. He severed the head of the wolf-like monster.  

(Sword Wolf! It’s a monster that can transform its fur into sharp blades. But if you attack before that happens, it’s not too hard to defeat!)  

Rindou’s knowledge was the result of his past admiration for players and his dedication to studying their techniques. What had been mere trivia until now, he transformed into actionable tactics. He put his full focus into fighting.  

“Next!”  

Determined to keep the battle short, Rindou dashed toward a second monster. He slashed upwards as he charged, slicing it clean in two.  

“Nexttttt!”  

The third monster’s fur began to bristle ominously. It caused Rindou to click his tongue.  

(That’s the precursor to transforming its fur into blades! I have to cut it down before that happens!)  

With a powerful step, he twisted his body and unleashed a spinning horizontal slash. Whether the fur would turn into blades first or Rindou’s attack would land—  

——Slash!  

Rindou’s swing connected just in time. The broken sword cleaved the Sword Wolf in two. It sent blood spraying in all directions.  

Panting heavily, Rindou looked up to see four more Sword Wolves ahead. Their fur had already transformed into razor-sharp blades.  

“Hah… hah… All four of them have activated their blade fur, huh?”  

Despite becoming a player, Rindou was still a novice.

Moreover, his only equipment was a sword he had found. Which was now broken.  

Even though he had obtained the skill [Basic Swordsmanship], it felt insufficient for surviving this situation. Yet he had no choice but to persevere—he couldn’t leave Kyouka alone.  

[Skill [Gacha] activated due to monster subjugation.]  

Immediately after defeating the Sword Wolf, the [Gacha] skill was triggered.  

[You have acquired the equipment [Iron Breastplate] from two gacha attempts.]  

(Two attempts? Shouldn’t it be three?)  

Rindou thought he had defeated three Sword Wolves. But as he was puzzling over this, another window appeared.  

[Special bonus for defeating five monsters. You have earned rare equipment obtainable from the defeated monsters.]  

(R-Rare equipment?)  

As the window disappeared, a golden magic circle appeared and vanished. It left a single sword embedded in the ground.  

“…Is this the rare equipment?”  

[You have acquired the rare equipment [Sword Wolf’s Gale Sword].]  

No sooner had he obtained the Gale Sword than the remaining four Sword Wolves charged, their fur sharpened into blades.  

“Damn it! No time to think!”  

Rindou didn’t even look at the breastplate. He hurled the broken sword as a feint. He then pulled the Gale Sword from the ground and sprinted into the fray.
