Episode 61: Restart

After the re-evaluation, Rindou and the others were waiting in the branch manager’s office. It was for the update of the new player ID.

Since it was an instruction from the branch manager, it seemed to take priority over everything else. Kenji mentioned that it wouldn’t take much time.

“Sorry for the wait, Player Amachi.”

Within ten minutes, Kenji returned to the branch manager’s office. He was holding Rindou’s updated player ID in his hand.

“Here is your updated player ID, now C-rank.”

“Thank you, Branch Manager.”

“I’ve just raised you to a rank that matches your abilities, Player Amachi. …Well, honestly, I think you could have made it to B-rank without a problem.”

He said this with a smirk, but Rindou just gave a wry smile in response.

“What will you do from here on out, Rindou-san?”

Ayane’s question made Rindou think for a moment.

Though he had just recovered, he had confirmed that his body could move after the battle with Kenji. In fact, he was surprised at how well he could move given he was still recovering.

In that case, he decided that the most important thing now was to gain the strength to obtain the Elixir as quickly as possible. With this in mind, he opened his mouth.

“I think I want to head towards one of the dungeon gates.”

“You’ve only just recovered a few days ago, right? How about taking it a little slower?”

“I agree with Ayane. Rindou-kun, you’re being reckless.”

Both Ayane and Kyousuke tried to stop him. But Rindou’s resolve was firm.

“No, I’m going. I have to get stronger as soon as possible.”

“It’s for Kyouka-chan, right? But, if something happens to you, you’ll only end up making her sad again, you know?”

“I know. But during that time, it’s not just me, it’s Kyouka who will suffer. That, I absolutely cannot allow!”

With a clenched fist, Rindou declared. Then Kyousuke spoke up.

“…I understand. I’m sorry, Branch Manager. Could I end my employment today?”

“Wait, Kyousuke!?”

Rindou was taken aback by Kyousuke’s statement. Kenji looked at him with a puzzled expression.

“Starting today, I want to fully return to being a player and support Rindou-kun.”

“What are you thinking!?”

“I told you when we were in the party, right? That I’d support Rindou-kun in getting the Elixir.”

“Even so, you…!”

Rindou covered his face in exasperation, but Kyousuke’s determination was clear. Neither of them looked away from each other as they glared.

“…Understood, Player Yada.”

“Even you, Branch Manager!”

“However, Player Amachi is a very rare individual with special abilities. The Association has judged that they cannot afford to lose someone like them. Therefore…”

Kenji paused there, casting a sideways glance at Ayane.

“…Could it be, Branch Manager? You don’t intend to involve Ayane, do you—”

“Ah, if it’s about us acting together, I’ve already been requested by the Branch Manager. And I’ve accepted, so don’t worry!”

Ayane cut off Rindou’s words. She gave him a wink as she answered.

“…I—I can’t be at ease about that, though!!!“

Rindou’s shout echoed through the soundproof branch manager’s office. It disrupted his intention to move without drawing attention.

After leaving the branch manager’s office, Rindou leaned against a chair on the first floor of the Association building.

“…What’s going on? I feel more exhausted than after the battle with the Branch Manager.”

It seemed like the mental fatigue was significant, as he remained in that position, unable to move for a while.

“Are you okay, Rindou-kun?”

“Ah… Yeah, I’m fine. But, more importantly, are you okay, Kyousuke?”

Kyousuke had been worried about Rindou. But the truth was, he had declared he would quit his job and return to being a player.

In fact, Kyousuke’s employment had already been terminated by the Branch Manager’s orders. It left him with only two choices: either return to being a player or look for a completely different job.

“I’m fine. Well, I might not be much help without your Advanced Potion, though.”

Upon hearing Kyousuke’s words, Rindou thought about how Kyousuke had shown such remarkable performance during the battle with Eldias Kong. It was all done despite his old injuries. He couldn’t help but look forward to seeing him fully recovered.

“I’ll go back home for a bit and get it. Wait just a little longer.”

“But……… Are you sure? I’m grateful, but it’s such a precious item.”

“Of course. Besides, if the two of us continue exploring together, we’ll eventually get another drop, right?”

“Huh? Three people, though?”

As Rindou had said “two”, it seemed Ayane had overheard. She returned after finishing her information-gathering. Her cheeks were puffed slightly as she entered Rindou’s line of sight.

“Is it really okay, Ayane? You still have your work as an A-rank player, right?”

“It’s a request from the Branch Manager, so I can’t ignore it.”

“That guy… He probably tried to be considerate. But to me, it’s a nuisance—”

“Ah! You just said it’s a nuisance, didn’t you!?”

Ayane seized on the unintended comment.

“…I didn’t say that.”

“You absolutely said it! Right, Yada-senpai?”  

“Ahaha… W-Well, for now, how about we head outside?”  

“Yeah, that’s right! Kyousuke’s suggestion is spot on! Let’s go, Ayane!”  

Noticing that other players were starting to glance their way, Rindou quickly agreed with Kyousuke’s suggestion.  

As for Ayane, it seemed she was so happy to hear Rindo say, “Let’s go”. It was so much that her earlier anger vanished entirely. It was then replaced by a beaming smile as she started walking.  

(… A-rank player Ayane Kazaki, huh. I’ll have to figure out if she’s someone truly worth trusting.)  

And so, Rindou resumed his journey as a C-rank player.
