Episode 106: Gergale ①

The target was Kageboshi.  

Perhaps Gergale thought female flesh would taste better than male; only it knew the reason. However, in this instance, its choice was a poor one.  

“[Shadow Movement]!”  

Though unable to physically move, Kageboshi had her [Shadow Magic] skill.  

She sank into her shadow and disappeared, narrowly avoiding Gergale’s charge.  

“Prey… disappeared?”  

Gergale was momentarily confused but quickly shifted its focus to Rindou.  

Its darkened, razor-sharp claws slashed toward him.  

“Don’t mess with meeee!”  

With a burst of strength, Rindou forced his body into motion. He swung his Gale Sword in a wide arc.  

While the swing lacked sharpness, it was imbued with raw power. Yet, it wasn’t enough to completely stop Gergale’s claws.  

“Gah!?”  

Though he avoided a direct hit, Rindou was overpowered and sent crashing into a wall. He landed hard on his back.  

“[Shadow Binding]!”  

Emerging from the shadows, Kageboshi unleashed her [Shadow Binding], binding Gergale. 

“Grah? … Grghhh!”  

“No way… it’s breaking free from [Shadow Binding]!?”  

The skill should have immobilized Gergale. It was being forcibly undone by its sheer strength.  

“Grggghh――GRUAARRGH!!”  

With a loud crack, the binding broke. It sent a massive recoil back to Kageboshi.  

“Kyaaa!”  

She was violently flung away, tumbling across the ground several times.  

“…Gyah-hahaha!”  

Seeing her crumpled form, Gergale smirked. It savored the thought of capturing its prey.  

“Not happening—[Reflection]! ”  

Standing back up, Rindou activated his [Iron Wall Reflection] skill. He charged at Gergale, whose back was turned.  

“Don’t interfere!”  

Gergale turned and lashed out with a backhanded strike.  

Certain of its victory, it expected to feast on Kageboshi at leisure—but something unexpected happened.  

――BOOM!  

“…Gargh?”  

Gergale let out a startled growl.  

“Got it—your right arm!”  

“…Aaaaghh!? My arm—MY RIGHT ARM!!”  

The energy stored in Rindou’s [Reflection] skill detonated. It blasted off Gergale’s right arm at the mid-point.  

Thick, tar-like black bl00d oozed from the wound.  

(Damn it! I was aiming for its head, but it blocked it!)  

Rindou had hoped to end the fight with this attack. But his target had defended itself. He clicked his tongue in frustration.  

“Damn youuuu! ROOOAR!!”  

Gergale swung its remaining left arm at Rindou. He leapt back to evade the attack. Without pause, he dashed toward Kageboshi.  

“Hey, you okay?”  

“…Barely,” 

She replied, though her body was covered in cuts. And bl00d was seeping from her wounds.  

“You don’t look fine to me.”  

“I must’ve gotten banged up while tumbling.”  

“Here, use this. No point saving it if it might shatter mid-fight anyway.”  

Rindou handed her a Basic Potion he had obtained from a gacha pull.  

“…Thanks.”  

“We’ll save the Intermediate Potion for later. Not like it’d matter if it breaks, though.”  

“It’d be a waste to use an Intermediate Potion for these minor injuries,” 

Kageboshi said, pouring the Basic Potion over her head.  

Her wounds closed almost instantly, and she stood up as if nothing had happened.  

“So, we blew off Gergale’s right arm. How do we finish this?”  

“That last move… can you use it again?”  

“Only if I take another attack. That’s the condition.”  

“That’s… risky. Let’s not rely on it unless necessary.”  

As they strategized, Gergale suddenly let out a deafening howl.  

“…AWOOOOOOOON!!”  

From the corridor behind it, a massive swarm of Kobolds began pouring out.  

“…What the? Normal Kobolds?”  

“They’re no real threat, but that’s way too many of them!”  

The Kobolds kept appearing, numbering over a hundred. Yet, none of them were higher-tier variants.  

“…Buy time!”  

“”””GARRRHH!!””””  

Following Gergale’s command, the Kobold swarm roared and charged at Rindou and Kageboshi.  

While the sheer number was overwhelming, neither of them struggled against the weaker Kobolds.  

Still, Rindou couldn’t help but watch Gergale’s movements carefully. He was wondering what its true plan might be.  

“…What the hell is it up to?”  

Rindou grimaced at the sight before him.  

“Garrah! Garghua… Gaurah!”  

While Rindou and Kageboshi were held back by the swarm of Kobolds, Gergale was devouring the very Kobolds it had summoned.  

“…C-cannibalism?”  

Disgusted by the grotesque scene, Kageboshi couldn’t hide her discomfort. However, an even worse situation was unfolding for the two of them.  

“…No way. This can’t be real. Its right arm—it’s regenerating!!”  

As Gergale continued consuming the Kobolds, the wound on its blown-off right arm began to writhe and heal. It was slowly regenerating.
