Episode 63: Kyousuke’s Comeback Battle  

This time, the three-star gate Rindou and his team aimed to conquer led them to a desolate wasteland. The scorching sun drained their stamina. And within this harsh environment, they had to face monsters.  

The boss monsters were often creatures resembling centipedes or lizards. Occasionally, massive monsters appeared instead. It was a turn of events that could be considered lucky or unlucky, depending on the players’ capabilities.  

A capable D-rank player might manage to defeat such monsters. But for those barely scraping by as D-rank, the outcome could easily turn fatal. Fortunately, Rindou was C-rank, Kyousuke was a seasoned former C-rank player, and Ayane was A-rank. Regardless of the boss monster’s form, their lineup was more than prepared to handle it.  

“…It’s so hot.”  

The group had already entered the gate. Sweat poured from their bodies, no matter how often they wiped it away. For Rindou, the sun blazing over the wasteland seemed more threatening than the monsters themselves.  

“The sun is a problem, but it looks like monsters are showing up already.” 

“…Yeah,” 

Rindou sighed at Kyousuke’s comment. He reached for the Gale Sword at his waist.  

“Wait, Rindou-kun.”

“Huh? What is it?”  

Just as Rindou prepared to fight, Kyousuke intervened.  

“This is my comeback match, so could you let me handle the first fight?” 

Kyousuke asked, stretching his limbs.  

The monsters were still about 100 meters away. It gave them ample time to prepare.  

“Fine by me. But are you sure?”  

“I’m the one asking, after all.” 

“Got it. I’ll leave it to you.”  

Rindou welcomed the suggestion. He didn’t want Ayane to witness his [Gacha] skill activating. It was especially when he wasn’t fully prepared.  

(If something unexpected happens, I can’t guarantee I’ll handle it smoothly.)  

Adapting to the wasteland’s environment was Rindou’s first trial in this exploration.  

“Are you okay with this, Ayane?”  

“Of course! It’s been ages since I’ve seen Yada-senpai fight!” 

Seeing her excitement, Rindou grew curious.  

“You know Kyousuke from his active days?”  

“When Yada-senpai was still active, I was a rookie. He fought on the front lines. I learned a lot from him at the Association!”  

“Haha, though now, your rank is higher than mine,” 

Kyousuke said, drawing his sword. He was aiming its tip at the approaching horde of worm-like monsters.  

“Kyousuke Yada, moving in!”  

The Desert Worms came in varying sizes. And this group seemed to be on the smaller side. However, their numbers were overwhelming—dozens of them were rushing toward Kyousuke.  

“Haaah!”  

Kyousuke charged into the fray. He sliced the lead Desert Worm clean in half with a single strike. His fluid swordsmanship enabled him to dispatch one after another without hesitation.  

“…Ayane, does Kyousuke use a swordsmanship skill?”  

“Hmm, it’s hard for me to say without overstepping. But let’s just say no.” 

“Seriously? He’s pulling off moves like that without a skill?”  

Rindou watched in awe. Kyousuke’s sword movements were flawless. It was something Rindou himself had only recently managed to emulate after acquiring a swordsmanship skill.  

“Apparently, Yada-senpai had experience in swordsmanship even before becoming a player. That probably made it easy for him to master the blade.” 

“I see, so he’s incorporating real-world skills.”

As he thought about it, he wondered if he had any real-world skills he could utilize in the same way. However, after a moment of reflection, he concluded that he possessed no special abilities that could be applied as a player. He decided to stop dwelling on it.  

Instead, he focused intently on observing Kyousuke’s movements. He was trying to commit every detail to memory as Kyousuke continued to cut down the monsters with practiced precision.  

(If I can integrate Kyousuke’s techniques into my [Intermediate Swordsmanship] skill, my movements might improve even more.) 

Currently, Rindou’s fighting style was almost entirely reliant on his skill. After all, he had no prior experience in swordsmanship. Even when he first acquired the [Basic Swordsmanship] skill, it had dramatically enhanced his abilities. Now, having upgraded to [Intermediate Swordsmanship], Rindou realized that learning real-world techniques could push him to even greater heights.  

“There’s just one left.”  

“Yeah.”

The horde of Desert Worms, which had numbered in the dozens, had been reduced to a single creature. Kyousuke quickly dispatched the final worm with a clean strike. He turned back to the others with a smile, completely unscathed.  

“All done.”

“Amazing work, Yada-senpai!” 

“That was incredible.”

With Kyousuke’s comeback battle concluded, the group began venturing deeper into the wasteland.
