Episode 98: Challenges and Expectations

After the battle with the Kobold Knight, Rindou immediately felt a sense of exhaustion.

(…This feels similar to when I overused [Basic Earth Magic].)

As expected of the [Magic Sword], it required the use of magical power to activate. 

When Rindou had been forced to choose which skills to keep, he had removed [Low-level Earth Magic] due to its impracticality caused by his low mana.

(I guess I need to find a way to increase my mana…)

While he was lost in thought, Kyousuke and Ayane approached. They had taken care of the Kobold Rangers.

“How was the [Magic Sword]?” 

“It was cool, Rindou-san!”

Kyousuke commented on its usability, while Ayane shared her thoughts on how it looked.

“If I can master it, I think it’s a skill suited for me. However, since my mana is low, that’s the challenge.”

Swordsmanship can be improved with the [Intermediate Swordsmanship] skill. And further enhancement is possible if it evolves into a higher tier. 

However, mana is something that cannot be easily increased in the same way.

“…Rindou-kun, the skills you’ve acquired later on. They have a proficiency, right?” 

“Yes, why?”

After confirming the matter of proficiency, Kyousuke looked thoughtful. He then voiced his own thoughts after a while.

“…From what I know, many players who acquired skills similar to the [Magic Sword] saw their mana naturally strengthen.” 

“Wha—! Is that true?” 

“Well, it’s just what I know. Ayane-san, have you ever heard of anything like that?”

Kyousuke turned to Ayane with the question.

“I’ve heard of something similar. But I’ve never actually teamed up with someone who had a skill similar to the [Magic Sword]…” 

“So, what was that similar skill you were talking about?” 

“It’s [Magic Enchantment].”

The skill [Magic Enchantment] isn’t like the [Magic Sword], which only coats a sword in magic; it can apply magic to all equipped gear. 

However, since it consumes a much larger amount of mana than the [Magic Sword], players who acquire [Magic Enchantment] tend to have much larger mana pools. And their mana growth rate is significantly higher compared to other stats.

“If mana growth is influenced by the skill, then when the [Magic Sword]’s proficiency increases and it evolves into a higher-tier skill, wouldn’t your mana also increase? Of course, this is just my guess.”

Kyousuke ended with a wry smile. But Rindou thought his prediction was probably correct. 

In fact, those who had magic-related skills tended to have higher mana. Their power increased as their mana grew. 

It could be viewed simply as becoming more familiar with the skill. But it could also be seen as the ability growing in line with the skill.

“But Kyousuke, don’t you guys have no proficiency in your skills? How do you explain that?”

The reason Rindou’s [Gacha] skill is considered out of the ordinary is because it grows over time. 

When you level up [Gacha], you can acquire more skills. But what makes it even more unusual is that you can increase the proficiency of these acquired skills to evolve them into higher-tier versions. 

This kind of progression is something that cannot be easily explained unless all players have proficiency in their skills.

“In your case, Rindou-kun, it’s just that your skills are evolving. But for us, it’s not the skills that are evolving—it’s that we’re growing in alignment with our skills.”

“…So, you’re saying that the player’s body is being influenced by the skill?” 

“Yeah. If I use myself as an example, I was naturally shy and didn’t like conflicts. But after becoming a player and acquiring the skill [Battle Spirit], I gradually started enjoying fighting. Though it’s only a little at first.”

Despite that, Kyousuke still maintained his gentle nature. As he believed it was because his original personality was inherently calm.

“Ayane-san, do you feel like your skill is pulling you in a certain direction?” 

When Kyousuke asked, Ayane nodded slightly.

“I do remember feeling something like that.”

“Really?”

“Yes. How should I put it… I feel like I’m more aware of the movements around me, or that I notice things more clearly than before I became a player. But I thought it was just something that happened naturally because of the type of skill I got.”

Although Ayane was aware of this, she thought she was simply doing it consciously due to the nature of her skill.

“As I said, this is just my prediction. As for Rindou-kun, I wanted to suggest that you try raising the proficiency of the [Magic Sword] and evolve it into a higher-tier skill.”

Using the [Magic Sword] would naturally lead to the use of [Intermediate Swordsmanship] as well. 

If he could raise the proficiency of both, it would only be for the better.

“…You’re right. My mana is low, so I can’t use it too many times. But when I can, I’ll try to use it as much as possible.”

The challenges of the [Magic Sword] became clear. But at the same time, it raised great expectations for what it could become.
