Episode 119: The Star-4 Double Gate

When Rindou and Kunichika arrived, a large number of players were already gathered near the gate. 

However, most of them weren’t entering. They were instead stationed outside as a reserve force in case of a stampede. 

“Who’s in charge here?” 

Kunichika was seemingly experienced in gate raids. As Rindou pondered what to do, Kunichika loudly demanded the person in charge to step forward. 

“I-It’s me!” 

“We’re reinforcements sent by the Player Association. Do you know the situation inside?” 

“Y-Yes! But… are just the two of you the reinforcements?” 

The man in charge initially looked relieved to see reinforcements. But upon realizing there were only two of them, he voiced his disbelief. 

“It’s just us this time.” 

“W-What?! No way!” 

“Got a problem with that?” 

“N-No! Not at all! Just… can this really work?” 

Rindou thought the man’s doubts were almost audible. But he ignored it and listened to the explanation instead. 

“As the Association likely informed you, this is a double gate. The interior is a labyrinth-type structure, and the number of beasts seems to increase with each passing day.” 

“What? Why didn’t you send capable players to clear it earlier?” 

If the number of beasts was growing daily, it not only made the gate harder to clear but also brought it closer to a stampede. When a stampede occurs, a flood of beasts would pour out and attack indiscriminately. It would endanger both players and civilians. It was crucial to clear the gate before that happened. 

“This situation was unexpected for us as well—” 

“No excuses! Hey, rookie! Let’s get inside and meet up with Kyousuke and the others!” 

“That sounds like the best plan.” 

Frustrated with the lack of proper gate management, Kunichika urged Rindou to act. And Rindou agreed. 

“But entering with just two people—” 

“So what? Anyone else here ready to step up and enter with us?” 

When the man in charge tried to object, Kunichika glared at him while Rindou called for volunteers. 

“…No one, huh?” 

“Ugh! W-Well…” 

“We’ll manage just fine on our own. Let us through, will you?” 

“…F-Fine! But if anything happens, I warned you! I won’t be held responsible!” 

The man was clearly more concerned with covering himself. He was spewing disclaimers. Rindou sighed in exasperation. But Kunichika wouldn’t let it slide. 

“Hey, you!” 

“Eeek!” 

“I’ll be reporting this to the Association later. Your words are already on record.” 

“W-What?! When did that happen?!” 

The panicked man reached out to Kunichika. But Kunichika had already strode away. The man stumbled forward and fell face-first. But neither Kunichika nor Rindou paid him any attention. 

“Tch, what’s up with that guy?” 

“Even the Association has its fair share of people like him. I’ve had my share of trouble with them too.” 

Rindou recalled an incident at the gate for rookie players that nearly cost him his life. 

“What? You’ve had trouble too, rookie?” 

“Yeah. I nearly died because of it.” 

“Seriously?! …Well, if anything happens, let me know. I’ve got some sway with the Association.” 

Kunichika’s unexpected sympathy left Rindou with nothing but a wry smile in return. 

“Still, doesn’t feel like a star-4 gate, huh?” 

“Yeah. Why is this even a star-4? …No, it must’ve changed as the beasts increased over time and altered the atmosphere.” 

Initially, it was probably an ordinary star-4 gate. But because of the double-gate structure, progress stalled. And the growing number of beasts gradually changed the gate’s atmosphere. That was Rindou’s theory. 

“Well, once we clear it, it’s over, right?” 

“Yeah. Let’s get moving!” 

“Got it!” 

With a call to action from Rindou, Kunichika bumped fists with him to fire up their spirits. 

Thus, Rindou and Kunichika stepped into the star-4 double gate.
