Episode 120: Debut Battle

As described, the space inside the door was a labyrinthine field.

“There’s only two of us. Splitting up would be foolish. It might be a hassle, but we’re sticking together.”

“Got it.”

Responding to Kunichika’s instructions, the two began their assault on the labyrinth.

Although players like Kyousuke, Ayane, and Kageboshi, as well as others, had supposedly ventured in earlier, there were no traces of them to be found. In fact, there weren’t even any signs of combat.

“…This is strange.”

“Yeah. There’s no way nothing’s happened… Wait, what’s that?”

Kunichika responded to Rindou’s muttering. Suddenly, they both sensed something approaching from deeper within the corridor.

“You noticed too, Kunichika?”

“Yeah, but this… No way, are you kidding me?”

The approaching presences weren’t just one or two. Their sheer numbers made Kunichika’s expression tighten slightly.

“I see them!”

Barely a second after Rindou’s exclamation, countless monsters of various races appeared from around the corner.

“This is complete chaos!”

“Is this really the time for analysis? Let’s go, rookie!”

“Yeah, I know!”

As Kunichika charged ahead, Rindou followed closely behind.

“Alright then, first strike is mine! Appear—Voltenix!”

At Kunichika’s shout, a massive spear appeared in his right hand. It materialized seemingly from thin air.

“[Thunder Strike]! Take this!!”

Kunichika swung Voltenix horizontally, sending a crackling bolt of lightning flying. The lead monster rushing toward them was instantly charred black, and the electricity spread to nearby monsters.

“Did you think sheer numbers would guarantee victory? Too naive, gate!”

Shouting defiantly, Kunichika leaped high into the air. He landed squarely in the middle of the slowed monster horde, their advance disrupted by the destruction of their front line.

“Ge-gyagya-gya!”

“Shut up, you fodder! [Thunderous Explosion]!”

Kunichika struck the ground with Voltenix, unleashing a thunderclap that disoriented the monsters’ inner ears. The deafening sound alone killed the ones closest to him.

“I can’t let myself fall behind! It’s your debut battle, Durandal! I’m counting on you!”

Charging into the disoriented monsters, Rindou unsheathed his new partner. It was the immortal sword Durandal. A beast-like monster struggling to regain its balance was right in front of him.

“Haaah!!”

With a forceful step forward, Rindou swung Durandal diagonally. The movement was smoother and sharper than even he had expected. Despite slicing through the monster’s hide, flesh, and bone, Rindou felt little resistance from the blade. 

Flowing seamlessly thanks to his advanced skill, [Advanced Swordsmanship], Rindou’s movements were like a whirlwind. Each swing of Durandal sent monsters flying or left them lifeless on the ground. The pile of corpses grew with every stroke.

“That’s a rookie? Haha! As a senior, a B-rank player, I can’t let myself lose out!”

Just as Rindou was inspired by Kunichika’s display, the reverse was also true. For the monsters, this must have been nothing short of despair. On the outside, Rindou’s whirlwind carved through the horde. While inside, Kunichika’s lightning-infused rampage wreaked havoc.

The primal instincts of every monster present screamed that these two humans were unbeatable.

“…B-bmooo!!”

A monster at the rear turned and fled. It prompted a chain reaction as others began retreating the way they came.

“Hey, you cowards! Don’t you dare run away!”

“Let’s chase them, Kunichika!”

“Yeah!”

Shouting in disbelief at the fleeing monsters, Kunichika hesitated for a moment. But Rindou quickly overtook him, urging him forward. 

Thus, immediately after entering the star-4 gate, Rindou and Kunichika found themselves in a pursuit battle.
