Episode 122: Seal

After a while, the sound stopped. And the wall that Rindou had found to be odd began to collapse. Upon seeing what was beyond it, both Rindou and Kunichika exchanged glances.  

“So this is the entrance to the double layered gate?”  

“I can feel an ominous presence, it’s intense.”  

Right after the wall collapsed, a strong presence became palpable. It was one they hadn’t felt before. It almost felt like the presence was deliberately aimed at them. It was as if to beckon them towards the entrance to the double layered gate.  

“It feels like it’s calling us over.”  

“Yeah, but… where’s Kyousuke?”  

Kunichika’s question mirrored Rindou’s own thoughts. In the initial area, they hadn’t found the presence or any traces of Kyousuke, Ayane, Kageboshi, or any other players.  

If this was the entrance to the double layered gate, they reasoned that there should be some presence from them here. Since they hadn’t been in the initial space.  

“…I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”  

“But Kyousuke and the others are strong. Even if something irregular happens, they should be able to survive.”  

While Kunichika looked troubled, Rindou continued to believe that Kyousuke and the others were still alive. For Kunichika, the relationship between him and Kyousuke was still new. But Rindou had faith that even in dire situations, Kyousuke, Ayane, and Kageboshi had the survival skills and determination to push through.  

“Well, it’s not certain that this is the entrance to the double gate. They could be alive somewhere else.”  

“If that’s the case, then we’ll just have to hunt down all the monsters here.”  

“Hunt them down, huh? Not bad, that sounds good.”  

Kunichika’s expression changed from a scowl to a ferocious grin. He was seemingly ready to go on the offensive.  

“But… can I ask something first?”  

Kunichika suddenly addressed Rindou.  

“What is it, what’s up?”  

“The guy ahead should be strong. We should check each other’s abilities.”  

“Check? What do you mean?”  

“Our skills. We might have things we want to keep hidden, but we should both know each other’s fighting capabilities.”  

Rindou agreed with Kunichika’s point and was about to speak when he realized something—his own skill hadn’t activated.  

“…Huh? Why isn’t my [Gacha] skill activating? I’ve already defeated a good number of monsters up to this point.”  

At that moment, his heart began to race. He was gripped by an unfamiliar sense of unease.  

“…What’s wrong? You suddenly look pale…”  

“S…status!”  

Interrupting Kunichika’s words, Rindou opened his status window. He immediately turned his attention to the skills list. Then—  

“…No way. When did this happen? When was it sealed?”  

In his skills list, most skills were listed in white, except for [Gacha]. Which was displayed in red with the word [Sealed] next to it.  

(What’s going on? My [Gacha] skill worked fine when we were clearing the star-5 gate. Does this mean it was sealed after we entered here? Was I the only one sealed? Or is something sealed for Kunichika too? But… he used Voltenix and magic-like abilities. Maybe I’m the only one…)

“Hey, newbie!”  

“Huh!”  

Kunichika’s loud voice snapped Rindou out of his spiraling thoughts.  

“…Sorry, Kunichika.”  

“Don’t worry about it. But what’s going on? If there’s something you can’t talk about, just keep that part a secret…”  

“No, I’ll share it. In fact, it’s better to share it.”  

“…Alright, but are you sure you’re okay?”  

Kunichika looked at him suspiciously, and Rindou nodded vigorously.  

“But first, Kunichika. Can you check your status and see if your skills have changed in any way?”  

“Skills, huh? Fine, I guess…”  

Rindou wanted to check whether he was the only one whose skills were sealed, or if it was happening to Kunichika as well.  

“…Huh? What’s this… Wait! Skill seal!!”  

“So it happened to you too?”  

“’It happened to you’? So you too, huh?”  

Kunichika was shocked, and Rindou continued.  

“Yeah. I completely forgot about it because of all the monsters that were attacking us earlier.”  

“But wait a minute. I was using my skills normally up until a certain point.”  

“You mean the magic-like thing with Voltenix?”  

Kunichika shook his head.  

“No, that’s a skill exclusive to Voltenix. I have a separate skill of my own.”  

“Oh, you have a different skill?”  

“Yeah. My skill is [Shrink]. It allows me to reduce the size of objects. That’s why Voltenix seemed to suddenly appear; I had it shrunk down and was carrying it around.”

(Note: What the hell~ Sun Wukong is that you?! Lol.)

Kunichika, as he explained, attempted to shrink the Voltenix to a more portable size. 

“…No good. I still can’t use it.”  

“That means it’s a relief the Voltenix wasn’t sealed before you returned it to its full size. Otherwise, you’d be fighting without a weapon.”  

Rindou remarked, his mind briefly flashing to the worst case scenario.  

“…Wait, Kunichika. If our skills are sealed, doesn’t that mean the same thing is happening to the other players?”  

“That’s likely. ……..I see, so that’s why no one has been able to clear this area until now—”  

“No! This means Kyousuke and the others are in the same situation as us. They were forced to fight without their skills!”  

Rindou’s urgent words made Kunichika realize the severity of the situation.  

“Kyousuke might be fine; he doesn’t rely on his skills in combat. But people like him are rare. Most of the others probably depend heavily on their skills.”  

“Let’s hurry! Both of us can fight even with our skills sealed! That means we have to be the ones to do this!”  

“Of course—hey, wait! Rookie!”  

Seeing Rindou dash off in a panic, Kunichika hastily ran after him.
