Episode 146: Kyouka’s Growth

Since Kyouka succeeded in clearing her first gate, Rindou and the others had been actively working on clearing star-2 and star-3 gates. 

Although the majority of the challenges were tackled by Kyouka alone, there were occasional moments when Rindou and the others stepped in to assist. 

Most of these instances involved preventing her from falling into traps. It was making her weaknesses more apparent. 

“Ugh, I almost got caught in another trap!” 

“Avoiding traps is tough for me too. It really just comes down to experience.” 

“Even so! Onii-chan, you noticed the trap and saved me!” 

In Rindou’s case, he had learned sensory detection from Kyousuke. Which had sharpened his ability to sense danger. 

Because of that, he could intuitively identify potentially dangerous areas within the gates. 

However, since he wasn’t yet able to definitively confirm whether a place was trapped, he had concluded that more experience was needed to refine this sense. 

“I’m still far from perfect myself.” 

“Humph!” 

“Now, now, both of you. Don’t worry, Kyouka-chan! I’ll protect you, so just relax!” 

“That’s not exactly reassuring, Ayane-san…” 

Kyousuke chuckled wryly at Ayane’s cheerful declaration to protect Kyouka. 

“But what Rindou-kun said is true, Kyouka-chan.” 

“Is that so?” 

“Yeah. For me too, it was only after Kyousuke taught me sensory detection that I started to get a feel for it. I want to hone that sense further, and the only way to do that is through experience.” 

“Exactly! So, Kyouka-chan, stick with me and make sure to experience lots of gates!” 

“”…………What are you even talking about?”” 

Rindou and Kyousuke both gave Ayane a flat stare as she veered off-topic. 

Watching the three of them, Kyouka was initially bewildered. But she gradually broke into a smile. 

“That’s right, Kyouka-chan! It’s no good to dwell on mistakes during a challenge! Stay calm and have fun with the adventure!” 

“Ayane-san……… Alright! I’ll do my best!” 

Realizing that Ayane had been trying to cheer Kyouka up in her own way, Rindou and Kyousuke exchanged glances and smiled wryly. 

“Alright, let’s refocus and finish clearing this star-3 gate!” 

“Yes!” 

Encouraged by Rindou’s call, Kyouka responded brightly and looked ahead. 

Relieved that her spirits had lifted, Rindou turned his gaze to Ayane. She noticed and flashed a thumbs-up with a beaming smile. 

From there, the exploration proceeded smoothly. Even when encountering traps, Kyouka didn’t let her mood falter. She maintained her focus all the way to the innermost area. 

Just when it seemed this gate would also be cleared without issue— 

——Squish. Crunch, crunch. Squish. 

The sound of something being chewed echoed from the final room. 

Rindou immediately stepped in front of Kyouka without a word, with Kyousuke and Ayane flanking her on either side. 

“Huh? Um, what’s going on?” 

“Stay alert, Kyouka.” 

“That’s an irregular monster.” 

“I didn’t expect a cannibal to show up.” 

“A… cannibal?” 

Kyouka was unfamiliar with the term Ayane had just used. 

“…Gehya?” 

The cannibal noticed Rindou and the others. It lifted its head from the prey it had been devouring. 

“Eek!” 

Its mouth was stained crimson, bl00d dripping from its meal. 

The horrifying sight made Kyouka scream. And the sound drew a sinister smile from the cannibal. 

“Gehyahyahya!” 

“It’s coming!” 

“Kyouka-chan, stay close to me and Ayane-san!” 

“Huh?! What about Onii-chan?!” 

“Don’t worry, Kyouka-chan! You know how strong Rindou-san is, right?” 

As the cannibal lunged, Rindou unsheathed Durandal and charged straight toward it. 

The blade slashed sharply, striking the cannibal—but with its agile movement, it deflected the blow with its claws and leaped backward. 

“Gegege! Gigya!” 

“Upset about being interrupted? Well, that makes two of us!” 

Right after Rindou’s declaration, flames engulfed Durandal’s blade. 

“Gigi?!” 

“[Magic Sword]. I need to level up my proficiency, and you’ll make the perfect target for it!” 

Perhaps because Kyouka had been handling most of the combat until now, Rindou seemed exhilarated to fight again. 

“Let’s do this!” 

“Gegigigiii!” 

Thus began the battle between Rindou and the cannibal.
