Episode 147: Cannibalistic Battle

The cannibal imitated a humanoid form. It launched attacks with its unnaturally long arms and whip-like movements.

Rindou fought back with Durandal, but the creature’s skin was exceptionally tough. It was impervious to the blade.

“Gegi! Gegiiii!”  

“What’s this? Weak against fire, are you?”

The fire imbued in Durandal by magic seemed to work to some extent. While the creature’s skin bore no cuts, scorch marks appeared. However, Rindou doubted it was causing significant damage. He realized he needed another strategy.

(If I stall for time, I might be able to turn the tide with my [Iron Wall Reflection]. But this thing is fast, and its reach is massive. Getting in close won’t be easy.)

As Rindou continued his calculated combat, Kyouka watched with fear-stricken eyes.

“…Is he… really going to be okay?”

The fight was dragging on longer than Kyouka had expected. She voiced her concern.

“It’s fine, Kyouka-chan.”

“Yeah, just watch closely. You might learn something useful!” 

“…Understood,” 

Kyouka replied, her unease slightly eased by their confidence. However, in truth, both Kyousuke and Ayane were nervous.

(This creature is stronger than I thought. Must have consumed plenty of other monsters.)  

(Hurry up and finish it off, Rindou-san!)

Kyousuke analyzed the situation calmly, while Ayane was growing impatient. Though neither allowed their worry to show for Kyouka’s sake.

“Gegagagaga!”

The cannibal had determined that Rindou wasn’t an immediate threat. It switched to an aggressive offensive.

“Damn it!”  

Exploiting its long reach, the creature forced Rindou onto the defensive. Kyousuke and Ayane wanted to assist, but doing so risked the creature targeting Kyouka instead. It left them frozen in place. Rindou occasionally glanced at them—a silent command to stay put that they fully understood.

(At this rate, I’m going to be overwhelmed. My only option might be [Iron Wall Reflection]—wait, what?!)

Just as Rindou prepared to counter, the creature leapt backward, creating distance. Its sudden retreat confused him, but—

“Gegyaaaaah!!”  

“What the–!?”

The moment it landed, the creature bursted forward with a shocking acceleration. It closed the gap instantly. Twisting its body for added centrifugal force, it delivered a strike only possible due to its long reach. Rindou had no choice but to block.

“Guaaaah!!”  

“Gehiiaaaah!”  

Reeling from the impact, Rindou staggered. Seeing this as a chance to finish him, the creature roared and launched an all-out assault. Rindou was waiting for an opening to use his reflection. He realized he wouldn’t last if he didn’t act immediately. Changing tactics, he prepared for a decisive counter.

“Gegagagagaaaaa!!”

The creature reared back, bringing its arms together for a crushing blow. It was aiming to overwhelm Rindou completely.

“Onii-chan!”  

Kyouka’s scream rang out.

“[Reflect]!”

This was the moment. Instead of aiming for a killing blow, Rindou redirected his stored energy to repel the attack and weaken the enemy. Durandal clashed with the creature’s fists.

——Boom!

“Gyaaaahhh!?”

The result was catastrophic—for the creature. The reflection’s force obliterated not just its fists but blew its arms off at the forearms. Screeching in pain, the creature retreated. It was drooling as it sought to recover. Rindou seized the opportunity to go on the offensive—but—

“My legs… won’t move!?”

The creature had used [Earth Magic] to pin Rindou’s feet to the ground in a desperate counter.

“Damn it!”  

Destroying the magic holding his feet, Rindou prepared to give chase. However, the brief delay had led to a worst-case scenario.

“Gehi! Gehihi… Gegagaga!”

The creature devoured the remains of a boss monster nearby, healing its wounds. Its severed arms regenerated. And now Rindou was the only one showing fatigue.

“…Looks like I’ve got no choice,” 

Rindou muttered, sweat dripping from his face as he made a grim decision.
