Episode 148: Skill [Fusion]

(The new skill [Fusion]. I’ll use it to create a skill capable of countering the cannibal. But…)

There were still too many unknowns about the [Fusion] skill. No, more accurately, there were so many uncertainties that Rindou had hesitated to use it with existing skills. Among the four skills he currently possessed—[Advanced Swordsmanship], [Death Resonance], [Iron Wall  Reflection], and [Magic Sword]—none were expendable.

After much deliberation, Rindou chose which skills to fuse.

“Skill [Fusion], activate! The skills I choose are—[Advanced Swordsmanship] and [Magic Sword]!”

A dazzling light burst from Rindou’s body, glowing white and red. The fierce wind generated by the fusion swirled around him like a storm. Kyouka and the others shielded their faces. They were squinting against the gale.

“Onii-chan!” 

Kyouka called out. But her voice was drowned out by the roaring wind.

“Gege? Gegagagaga!”

Noticing Rindou’s transformation, the cannibal roared and charged at him. Its wounds had fully healed. It swung its once-destroyed right arm down, aiming for a lethal strike.

Just as the blow was about to land, the white and red light merged into one. It enveloped Rindou in a radiant aura.

“Uoooooooohhh!!”

Durandal sliced through the cannibal’s claws with incredible force, sending it flying backward. A small piece of the monster’s claw broke off. The cannibal recoiled in shock.

“Gega?”

It jumped back, widening the distance. Its confusion was growing as it struggled to comprehend what had happened.

“…Looks like it worked.” 

Cloaked in the two-toned light, Rindou fixed a sharp gaze on the cannibal. He launched himself forward. His speed doubled. And in an instant, he closed the distance.

“Gega!?”

The cannibal gasped. But before it could react, Durandal had already struck. Its left arm was severed cleanly. And for the first time, fear appeared on the creature’s face.

“[Advanced Magic Swordsmanship: Ignite].”

——Fwoosh!

“Gegeeeeeh!? Gegya! Gegagaaaahh!!”

The fusion of [Advanced Swordsmanship] and [Magic Sword] had given birth to a new skill: [Advanced Magic Swordsmanship]. Unlike before, where Durandal merely carried a flame aura, the weapon now unleashed invisible flames that ignited the severed arm of the cannibal. The fire rapidly spread to its torso.

“Gigiyaaaaaah!!”

——Squelch! Rip!

Desperate to extinguish the flames, the cannibal clawed at its own burning flesh. But the fire wouldn’t die out. Realizing it couldn’t stop the flames, it made a brutal decision: it grabbed its burning left arm and tore it off at the root.

“A good move! But—too late!”

Rindou’s sword flashed horizontally toward the now-crippled monster. The cannibal bent backward to avoid the slash. But Durandal’s movement transitioned seamlessly into a diagonal cut, relentlessly wounding its body.

Rindou’s movements resembled a deadly sword dance. They left countless wounds across the creature’s form. And then—

——Fwoosh!

“Gigiyaaaaaahh!! Gigagaga—gagigiyaaaaaahhh!!”

Flames erupted from every wound, enveloping the cannibal entirely. Its death throes echoed as it staggered around. It was burning from both the outside and within. The fire crept deeper into its body, consuming it from the inside.

“…!? …Aa…aaaa…”

The monster let out its final, incoherent sounds before collapsing. Even then, Rindou remained cautious. He was unwilling to let his guard down until he was certain the cannibal was truly dead.

[Due to the defeat of the monster, the skill [Gacha] has been activated.]

The notification of his original skill, [Gacha], confirmed that the cannibal had been slain. Only then did Rindou allow himself a moment of relief.
