Episode 149: The Long-Awaited Gacha

When Rindou cleared the star-4 double gate, his skill [Gacha] was sealed.  

Because of that, it had been a long time since the skill [Gacha] had activated. And he felt a sense of nostalgia.

[You have defeated an irregular boss monster for the first time. You will receive rare equipment or a skill.]

(So the cannibal was an irregular boss after all. Well, considering how absurdly strong it was for a star-3 gate boss, that makes sense.)*

Rindou stared at the window. He was nodding in understanding as the gacha results appeared.

[You have acquired the cannibal’s skill: [Gluttony].]

“…’Gluttony’, huh?”

Watching the cannibal devour other monsters during the fight had been unsettling enough. Now, receiving the skill [Gluttony] left Rindou feeling less than thrilled.

“Well, depending on its effect, it might be useful. Let’s check it out.”

Muttering to himself, Rindou opened his status window.

“…You can completely neutralize toxins ingested through food. And the stronger the poison, the greater the permanent increase to your stats?!”  

At first, Rindou thought [Gluttony] was a mediocre skill. But upon reading the last line, he couldn’t help but shout in surprise.

“Onii-chan!”

“Whoa?! …Oh, it’s just you, Kyouka.”

Focused entirely on his status screen, Rindou hadn’t noticed Kyouka running toward him. When she hugged him from behind, he yelped in surprise. But he quickly softened his expression and gently patted her head.

“I was so worried about you!”  

“Sorry. But I did win, didn’t I?”  

“If you’re going to win, do it with more composure next time!”  

“That’s asking for the impossible.”

Winning every fight effortlessly was a tall order, and Rindou could only laugh wryly.

“But even I was on edge this time,” 

Kyousuke said, walking over with Ayane.  

“Exactly! You should’ve used your trump card sooner!” 

“I mean, I thought it was too risky to lose [Advanced Swordsmanship] and [Magic Sword]. I figured I’d only test fusion on disposable skills.”

Although using fusion at an unexpected time worked out, Rindou couldn’t deny it had been a gamble.

“Still, your swordsmanship was incredible. Did [Advanced Swordsmanship] improve?”

“No, it evolved into [Advanced Magic Swordsmanship].”  

“[Ad-Advanced Magic Swordsmanship]? I’ve never heard of that,” 

Ayane said, tilting her head.

“Well, normally, you can’t fuse skills.”

“True. Maybe Rindou-kun really is destined to become humanity’s greatest weapon against monsters, like the Branch Manager expects.”

“Exactly! Once Rindou-san matures, he could become the strongest player ever!”   

“Hey, you’re overhyping me.”

Rindou understood his skill [Gacha] was extraordinary, but he also knew there were stronger players out there.

“S-rank players are probably way more overpowered than me, right? The Branch Manager is S-rank too, isn’t he?”

Rindou recalled sparring with Kenji during a rank reassessment not long after becoming a player. Even though Kenji had held back, every strike rattled Rindou’s bones. It left him drenched in cold sweat. He couldn’t land a hit, and the session ended with a complete shutdown of his offense.

“That guy’s seriously a monster, you know? Don’t compare me to him.”

When Rindou said this, Kyousuke and Ayane gave him skeptical looks.

“…You’re the one saying that?”  

“…Seriously, you’re plenty overpowered yourself, Rindou-san.”

Even now, Rindou possessed five skills, all of which were considered rare. That alone marked him as extraordinary. With his growth potential, many believed he could one day become the strongest.

“As expected of you, Onii-chan!”  

Hearing this from his only family member, Kyouka, left Rindou unable to deny it.

“Well, I might not reach S-Rank, but I’m definitely getting stronger.”

“‘Might not’~?”  

“‘Getting stronger’~?”

“T-That’s enough! We’ve cleared the gate, so let’s hurry back to the surface!”

Fearing more teasing from Kyousuke and Ayane, Rindou quickly strode toward the room where the gate’s core awaited.

Watching him retreat, Kyousuke, Ayane, and Kyouka exchanged glances before bursting into laughter.
