Episode 156: Anger vs. Anger

Just as Rindou and his group were nearing the harbor—  

——ZAP ZAP ZAP ZAP!  

A fierce burst of lightning erupted from the direction of the harbor. It scattered electric shocks around the area.  

“What the hell happened!?”  

“Don’t tell me it can use lightning on top of fire!?”  

Rindou and Ayane shouted in alarm, but Kyousuke had a different reaction.  

“…N-No, that’s not it. That lightning, it can’t be!”  

Kyousuke yelled and accelerated. He broke ahead of the group and charged alone toward the harbor.  

“Wait, Kyousuke!”  

Rindou called after him, but Kyousuke didn’t stop. With no choice, the group followed. They increased their pace to catch up.  

When they entered the harbor, they found Kyousuke standing still. Following his gaze, Rindou was struck with shock at the sight before them.  

“…Kuni…chika?”  

“Grrrruuuuuhhh…”  

Rindou couldn’t help but let out a gasp.  

Before them was a massive Dragon. Its jaws were stained crimson. In front of the beast lay Kunichika, collapsed and missing his left arm.  

“Hahaha… Quite the delicacy, I must say.”

“It talked!? A monster!?”  

“That’s an S-rank beast! Stay on guard!”  

Ayane shouted in astonishment as the Dragon spoke, and Kageboshi issued a warning.  

But Kyousuke was deaf to their voices. He gripped the sword he’d already drawn tightly.  

“Uooooooohhhhhh!”  

“Stop, Kyousuke!”  

Fueled by rage, Kyousuke charged forward. He activated the skill [Battle Spirit], completely ignoring Rindou’s attempt to stop him.  

“You look tasty too, human!”  

“Dieeeeee!”  

Just as Kyousuke swung his sword, a faint voice reached his ears. It cut through his rage.  

“……op.”  

“—!?”  

It was Kunichika’s voice. Faint, softer even than Rindou’s shout. But Kyousuke heard it clearly.  

In an instant, Kyousuke shifted his strategy. He thrust his sword vertically into the Dragon’s gaping mouth just as it snapped shut. It created a slight delay in its bite.  

Using that moment, Kyousuke repositioned himself, kicked the dragon, and redirected his trajectory toward Kunichika. Grabbing him, he quickly retreated to safety.  

“…Ha… Not bad…”  

“Kunichika, are you okay!?”  

Kyousuke was unusually loud. He ignored formalities as Kunichika weakly continued.  

“…That thing… It’s bad news. You all need to fight it together… or wait for an S-rank player to… arr…ive…”  

“Hey! Kunichika!”  

Frustrated, Kyousuke reached into his Magic Bag for a potion. But at that moment, the Dragon opened its mouth. Inside, a fiery red glow began to flicker—clearly, it was preparing to unleash a breath attack.  

“[Ice Bullet]!”  

Kyoka’s spell shot into the Dragon’s mouth, disrupting the fiery buildup.  

“Grahhh!?”  

The Dragon let out a smoky growl but quickly advanced. It attempted to crush them with its enormous body.  

“[Shadow Binding]!”  

“Ghnuh!?”  

Kageboshi’s skill immobilized the Dragon briefly, but—  

“You think this will stop me, humans!?”  

The Dragon quickly broke free, roaring furiously.  

“It’s enough!”  

“We won’t let you through!”  

Ayane and Rindou leaped forward, engaging the Dragon and holding it in place.  

“Open your eyes, Kunichika!”  

“…Damn it. You wake me up after I’ve been holding it off by myself?”  

Kyousuke used an Intermediate Potion, the best he had on hand, to heal Kunichika. While his wounds closed, his missing left arm did not regenerate—regrowing lost limbs was beyond the power of even Advanced Potions.  

Looking at Kunichika’s body, Kyousuke clenched his teeth in frustration.  

“…I’m sorry, Kunichika. We got here too late!”  

“What are you apologizing for? You were helping the other players, right? I’d have done the same. In fact, I did, and that’s why I ended up like this. Don’t sweat it.”  

Kunichika exhaled deeply and placed his right hand on Kyousuke’s shoulder. He was using it as leverage to stand.  

“…Don’t tell me you’re still planning to fight!?”  

“Hah? Of course I am. For me, this is round two!”  

With a fierce grin, Kunichika activated the skill [Thunder God’s Heavy Armor].  

Lightning surrounded him, forming an electric arm where his left one had been. It was moving as if it were flesh and bl00d.  

“With this, I can still fight, you know?” 

“…Honestly, you’re something else.” 

As Kunichika declared this, Kyousuke muttered in exasperation. Rising to his feet, he stood beside Kunichika. 

“So this is what you meant when you said we all need to fight together?” 

“Of course. Don’t underestimate me.” 

Kunichika stood tall, gripping his weapon Voltenix. 

His resolute stance inspired Rindou and the others. It united their resolve to bring down the Dragon together. 

“We’re taking this thing down! Everyone, let’s do this!” 

“Hahahahaha! Amusing! Before I wipe out humanity, I’ll feast on you all first!” 

Thus, the battle between Rindou’s group and the Dragon began.
