My Villain Is Super Sweet (GL) - CHAPTER 28
Lin Lang had always hidden her true intentions: wanting to align herself with powerful allies to counter the He family and He Jikai, ultimately just to ensure her own survival.
For Lin Lang, this matter unfolded on three different levels:
On the first level, both Gu Qingci and Gu Minglan had a vague sense of it. After all, Lin Lang had consistently sought to win their favor and move closer to them.
As for opposing the He family and He Jikai, they only sensed her wariness toward the He family but didn’t know the deeper reasons. After the incident, their relationship with the He family was unlikely to be harmonious, so they remained allies on the same front.
But the third level? Only Lin Lang knew about it.
No one else knew that everything she had done, all her efforts, ultimately boiled down to a single goal: staying alive.
And as for accidentally winning Gu Qingci’s heart along the way…
Well, that was just a beautiful surprise!
It was an uncontrollable attraction, two souls drawing closer.
She genuinely never approached Gu Qingci with such intentions!
Absolutely not!
But now that they were together, even if Gu Qingci hadn’t officially acknowledged it verbally, they were already at the point of considering building a life together. Whether she said it out loud or not didn’t matter anymore.
Since they were now a pair, Lin Lang figured she could share a little more.
Before she could speak, though, Gu Qingci, still visibly upset, suddenly mused, “Wait, I think I’ve heard something similar to this before.”
“Oh, I remember. Back then, you said He Weimin came to see you, claiming to be an old classmate and good friend of your uncle, and wanted to form a family alliance.” She narrowed her eyes suspiciously at Lin Lang. “Wasn’t that promise just bait to get you on board?”
Lin Lang nodded, confirming, “Yes, you’re absolutely right. My uncle even rounded up a bunch of relatives to brainwash me, saying it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to rise to the top.”
Gu Qingci rested her chin on her hand, staring at Lin Lang through the screen. She muttered, “Sure, you’re good-looking, but not that good-looking. Why does the He family act like they’re obsessed with you? One moment, they’re offering you the position of daughter-in-law, the next, they’re showing up to make their presence known.”
Her words slowed as her expression grew serious, with a touch of doubt: “Why is the He family so fixated on you?”
What kind of grudge could warrant this?
But it didn’t make sense. When Gu Qingci first noticed Lin Lang’s unspoken wariness of the He family, she had her mother look into any connections between them.
The result? There weren’t any.
At most, both families used to be from the same rural county before Rong City rapidly developed.
The only link was that He Weimin and Lin Lang’s uncle were high school classmates.
As for He Weimin’s claim of being best friends with her uncle and promising to become in-laws someday, that was laughable.
The two hardly interacted, whether before or after the He family’s rise through the real estate boom.
What kind of grudge could Lin Lang possibly have with the He family?
“That’s the million-dollar question—I don’t know either,” Lin Lang said with a helpless shrug. She had long dreamed of knowing the answer, but even in her dreams, there were no useful clues. Those dreams always came in fragments, with her as a mere background figure, appearing only once in the form of a gravestone when Lin Yao and Gu Qingci formed an alliance.
The dream mostly revolved around He Jikai and his entanglements with various women, including a “destined” heroine. Lin Lang found the absurd drama so exasperating that she didn’t even want to talk about it.
Apart from that, it was filled with long scenes featuring Gu Qingci, almost as if the dream existed solely for her.
While Lin Lang was mentally griping, Gu Qingci had already gone over everything in her mind.
“So, you don’t know what’s going on with you and the He family, right?” Gu Qingci asked, her face calm.
Lin Lang confirmed.
“But from the start, you’ve been deeply wary of them,” Gu Qingci said, her gaze sharp.
Who would fear someone so much without knowing if there was a grudge?
Lin Lang hesitated, then tugged at her hair in frustration. She knew full well that without a reasonable explanation, she’d be planting a potential landmine in their future.
Taking a deep breath, she sincerely asked, “If I said it’s because of a nightmare, would you think I’m crazy?”
A nightmare? Gu Qingci’s heart skipped a beat, recalling the dream Lin Lang had mentioned before.
Instead of saying she believed or didn’t believe, Gu Qingci asked an unexpected question: “That night, did you show up there because of that nightmare?”
Lin Lang scratched her face, suddenly feeling shy. She lowered her head and softly replied, “Yes.”
Gu Qingci wasn’t surprised.
She’d suspected as much back then but let it go because she knew Lin Lang meant no harm.
Looking at Lin Lang, now awkward and flustered, Gu Qingci’s gaze softened, filled with so much affection it was nearly overflowing.
Unfortunately, Lin Lang was too busy regretting her earlier excuses to notice.
Gu Qingci mentally replayed the events.
No wonder there was no traceable link between Lin Lang and the He family. Who would’ve thought the grudge came from a dream?
It made sense now—why Lin Lang had appeared at just the right moment to save her, why she was so wary of the He family, and why she had been particularly ruthless toward He Jikai.
It was likely that the dream had unsettled her, prompting her to check things out. And when the dream turned out to be true, she’d stepped in to help—an enemy’s enemy is a friend, after all. If she could gain an ally, even better.
But who could’ve guessed the events in the dream would really unfold?
The thought of Lin Lang quietly dying in that dream, forgotten by everyone except her sister Lin Yao, sent a sharp pang through Gu Qingci’s heart.
Even as she tried to comfort herself that it was just a dream and that Lin Lang was alive and well, her unease wouldn’t fade.
If Lin Lang had found her and saved her on her birthday two years ago, it strongly suggested the dream was a vision of the future.
Why Lin Lang had the dream didn’t matter.
Feeling anxious and overwhelmed, Gu Qingci’s eyes fixated on Lin Lang through the screen. She reached out instinctively, but her fingers only touched the cold glass. In a trembling voice, she called out, “Lin Lang…”
Her tone was shaky, filled with panic and the verge of tears.
Startled, Lin Lang snapped out of her thoughts. Seeing Gu Qingci’s distressed expression, she panicked. Her voice softened, warm and reassuring, as she said, “What’s wrong? Don’t be scared—I’m here.”
If only she could reach through the screen to hold her and offer comfort.
After a long while of coaxing, Lin Lang realized Gu Qingci was frightened by the thought that since part of the dream had already come true, the rest might as well.
Gu Qingci was afraid of losing her.
Understanding this, Lin Lang couldn’t help but smile despite the inappropriate timing.
“Don’t worry. Look, I’m perfectly fine,” she said seriously, trying to make herself look as convincing as possible. “Things in the dream can be changed. Remember, I broke that guy’s leg back then and kept you safe, didn’t I?”
Gu Qingci felt a bit better at that.
Yes, as long as things could be changed, there was no need to fear the dream.
Her voice, still soft but earnest, carried her plea: “Promise me you’ll take care of yourself, okay? I’ll be back soon.”
Lin Lang solemnly promised, then, with her usual sass, added, “Don’t worry—I’ve never planned to hand you over to anyone else!”
Even if it meant clinging to life with all her might, Lin Lang was determined to stay alive and keep Gu Qingci close.
Gu Qingci was momentarily stunned by her bold words.
All her earlier sadness and panic? Out the window!
Thanks to Lin Lang’s cheeky remarks, Gu Qingci’s mood stabilized quickly.
With her grief-filter lifted, her rationality returned.
Though the matter of Lin Lang’s safety was important, her thoughts had already shifted to another question:
“You knew you might not have much time left, so why did you come after me?”
What kind of person falls for someone only to leave them grieving?
Didn’t she worry about breaking her heart?
“Don’t tell me you don’t love me that much,” she teased.
Lin Lang, ever confident, replied, “You’re so beautiful and amazing—who wouldn’t be drawn to you?”
“I couldn’t help it, and I was lucky enough to catch your attention. How could I resist?”
“And who knows what the future holds? I might live a long, long time. Missing the chance to be with someone as incredible and mutually smitten as you? That would’ve been a regret for the ages.”
“So, when the opportunity comes, you grab it. Life is about living in the moment and cherishing those you care about!”
One thing she didn’t say out loud:
She wasn’t some selfless saint.
She had always fought for what she wanted.
The person she set her sights on would be no exception.
A flower she had nurtured with care—how could she let anyone else pick it?
Even if her time was short, she’d make sure to seize every moment with Gu Qingci, doing all the things a couple should do.
No, she’d do them multiple times.
Enough to leave her mark on Gu Qingci’s body and soul, ensuring she’d never be forgotten.
