- Chapter 2 - "Sister, can you tell me about my mother?"
Qi Ying came downstairs yawning, made herself a cup of coffee, and then sat at her desk to review the custom requests from yesterday’s clients. The previous evening, a newlywed couple had come in, wanting a heavily embellished wedding dress for their big day. Qi Ying had chatted with the bride late into the night, sending a few reference images before settling on a design. Today, she planned to create a sample for the bride to review.
After finishing her coffee, Qi Ying pulled out a measuring tape and got to work.
Her rented studio had two floors. The first floor was her workspace—display windows in the front and her design studio in the back. Upstairs was a small loft, half the size of the first floor, serving as Qi Ying’s living quarters. After wrapping up work each day, she could head straight upstairs to sleep, wake up, and get right back to work—all while keeping an eye on the shop. It was incredibly convenient.
Qi Ying selected a piece of wood-pulp kraft paper to draft the sample. The bride wanted a wedding dress that was both unconventional and bold. Qi Ying decided on a design combining crystals and fresh flowers, paired with a long train, creating a lavish and grand piece.
Just as Qi Ying was deeply engrossed in sketching, her phone chimed with a notification.
She glanced at it and saw it was an alert from the game.
“Dear Designer, your little Xing Xiaochu is ready to be discharged from the hospital! Shouldn’t you bring her some flowers to celebrate?”
Qi Ying paused, suddenly remembering that she had inexplicably entered a game world the night before and rescued a young Omega. Now, the system was reminding her that this little Omega was about to leave the hospital.
It did seem like she should check in on her.
Qi Ying glanced at her nearly finished sample draft and decided it was time for a break.
When she reappeared in the hospital, Qi Ying was holding a bouquet of lilies. The fresh flowers looked as if they had just been picked, exuding a delicate fragrance, their snow-white petals glistening with moisture, appearing exceptionally tender.
Qi Ying carried the bouquet to Xing Xiaochu’s room from the previous night. Pushing the door open, she saw the young girl with her back turned, folding the hospital blanket while still wearing yesterday’s clothes.
“Why are you wearing those clothes again?” Qi Ying asked from the doorway. “Are they dry?”
Xing Xiaochu turned around in surprise, hurriedly finishing folding the blanket before setting it aside. Her beautiful eyes locked onto Qi Ying, her fingers nervously twisting the hem of her shirt.
“Th-they’re dry,” Xing Xiaochu whispered. “Last night, I asked the nurse and borrowed the hospital laundry room to wash them. They dried overnight.”
Her face flushed red as she looked at Qi Ying. “Thank you for yesterday.”
Qi Ying smiled. “No need to thank me.”
She walked over and handed the flowers to Xing Xiaochu, speaking softly, “These are for you. You’re being discharged today, right?”
Xing Xiaochu seemed stunned—perhaps it was the first time she had ever received flowers. She clutched the bouquet for a long moment before nodding in response. “Yes, the nurse will come soon to help me with the discharge procedures.”
Qi Ying nodded. “Alright, I’ll handle that later. Sit and rest for now. Have you eaten breakfast?”
Xing Xiaochu shook her head slightly.
Qi Ying said, “I’ll go buy you something.”
After buying a bottle of eight-treasure porridge and a packet of bread from the vending machine, Qi Ying returned to the ward to find Xing Xiaochu still holding the bouquet of flowers. With childlike curiosity, she gently poked the delicate white petals before cautiously leaning in to sniff them. Apparently catching a pleasant fragrance, her brows and eyes relaxed into a serene expression.
Xing Xiaochu’s fair complexion made it momentarily difficult for Qi Ying to determine whether the lilies or the girl were more beautiful. Her neatly combed black hair—no longer clinging damply to her cheeks like yesterday—paired with her exquisite features gave her an exceptionally pure appearance.
Now dressed in a dress sitting on the hospital bed, the faded fabric draped over her knees, revealing only a pair of slender calves. The worn dress accentuated her remarkably narrow waist.
Qi Ying’s fingers twitched involuntarily, her professional instincts surfacing—that impossibly slim waist practically begged to be measured by hand, to verify its exact dimensions.
Xing Xiaochu noticed her first.
“Sister?”
Holding the flowers somewhat shyly, Xing Xiaochu called out timidly, snapping Qi Ying out of her reverie. She entered with breakfast and placed it on the side cabinet.
“Eat first,” Qi Ying told her. “I’ll handle your discharge procedures later.”
The paperwork proved straightforward, with a nurse even personally escorting Qi Ying to the payment counter. While waiting, the young nurse remarked cheerfully, “You two make such a sweet couple. It’s rare to see an alpha handling these formalities.”
Qi Ying blinked. “Is it unusual?”
“Quite,” the nurse nodded. “Most alphas won’t bother with such trivial matters. You’re very good to your girlfriend.”
Qi Ying smiled without correcting her.
Though brief, her exposure to this society had revealed its structure: alphas held supreme authority, omegas occupied lowly positions reminiscent of feudal-era women—restricted to childbearing with no career options—while overlooked betas toiled like worker bees, providing comfortable lives for the other castes without complaint.
Qi Ying shook her head. Thankfully, this was just a game.
Returning to the ward area, she spotted Xing Xiaochu already packed and waiting by the doorway, clutching the bouquet against the white wall in quiet contemplation. At Qi Ying’s call, her head snapped up, eyes brightening as she hurried over.
Her rushed approach left her slightly breathless, cheeks flushed adorably.
“Why the hurry? Got everything packed? Anywhere you’d like to go later?” Qi Ying reached out to pinch Xing Xiaochu’s rosy cheeks, her voice dropping to a murmur.
Strangely, the more she pinched, the redder those cheeks became, until Xing Xiaochu’s entire face burned scarlet, drawing suppressed giggles from nurses at the station.
Xing Xiaochu’s cheeks felt impossibly soft and warm beneath her fingers—like kneading freshly steamed mantou straight from the pot.
The sensation was so satisfying that Qi Ying feared she might get addicted to it. After just a few quick squeezes, she let go, ignoring the nurses’ amused laughter behind them as she took Xiaochu’s hand and led her out of the ward.
Xiaochu, her hand held by Qi Ying, followed silently toward the elevator. She opened her mouth as if to say something but, after glancing at their intertwined hands, kept quiet, her ears turning bright red.
This older sister… was so strange.
Only when they reached the hospital entrance did Qi Ying finally release her grip. Turning to look at the blushing girl still clutching the bouquet, she asked, “Where do you live? I’ll take you home.”
Xiaochu’s face instantly paled.
Qi Ying frowned in confusion. “What’s wrong? Don’t want to go home?”
Going home meant being handed over by her scumbag father to that old man A in exchange for a dowry. Xiaochu couldn’t bear the thought, but if she didn’t return, where else could she go?
She was homeless.
When Xiaochu remained silent, Qi Ying grew puzzled. Just then, her phone pinged. Pulling it out, she saw a property purchase contract displayed on the app interface.
Dear Designer~
To nurture an outstanding Xiaochu, she needs a warm home! The drunken, daughter-selling household is no longer an option, but fortunately, you’re by her side!
Â
Your new home is ready—take your Xiaochu to see it now!
Qi Ying opened the contract, noting the address and confirming the signature under the buyer’s name—her own. It was a 200-square-meter luxury apartment worth millions.
They’re even giving me a house?
Glancing at Xiaochu, Qi Ying hesitated before saying, “If you don’t want to go back, you can come to my place.”
Xiaochu looked up timidly. “R-Really?”
“Yeah.” Qi Ying hailed a cab casually. “Come on, let’s go home.”
The new home turned out to be a sprawling luxury apartment in an upscale complex within the Second Ring Road, featuring private elevator access and facial recognition entry.
This was Qi Ying’s first time here too. Following the navigation, she eventually found the building. Worried about not having keys, she was relieved to discover a fingerprint lock.
“Door unlocked—”
Pushing open the entrance, Qi Ying was greeted by an extravagantly decorated space—a bright, spacious living room where smart devices activated automatically upon entry. The floor-to-ceiling curtains parted slowly, revealing a stunning cityscape.
Stunned, Qi Ying turned to see Xiaochu equally wide-eyed. Unable to help herself, she smiled. “Come in. This is your home now.”
Xiaochu hovered nervously at the threshold before nodding and stepping inside.
While Xiaochu changed shoes, Qi Ying explored “her” new home—a lavish layout with a master suite (complete with walk-in closet and bathroom), two guest bedrooms, a study, a powder room, and what might be a maid’s quarters or storage space.
The walk-in closet overflowed with clothes, plus cabinets of jewelry and handbags. Qi Ying randomly picked a dress—all items were her exact size.
What a magical game.
After confirming this was indeed her property, Qi Ying returned to find Xiaochu still clutching the lilies by the entrance. Spotting Qi Ying, the girl whispered shyly, “Jiejie…”
“Come here.”
Qi Ying waved to her: “You’ll stay in the room next to mine. Let me know if anything’s missing, and I’ll go buy it later.”
Xing Xiaochu walked over, looking at the bedroom before them with uncertainty. “This entire room… is just for me? No one else will be staying here?”
Qi Ying replied, “Of course, this is your bedroom. You’ll be living here from now on.”
After speaking, Qi Ying gave Xing Xiaochu a tour around the house, helping her get familiar with her new living space.
Once the tour was over, Qi Ying poured Xing Xiaochu a cup of tea, and the two settled onto the large, plush sofa in the living room to rest. Qi Ying was just thinking about logging out of the game before lunch—she still needed to finish up some sewing work on her clothes.
Just then, Xing Xiaochu, sitting across from her, suddenly spoke up.
She seemed to have been contemplating the question for a while. Her watery eyes fixed intently on Qi Ying as she asked, “Sis, since you’re my mom’s friend… can you tell me about her?”
Qi Ying: “…”
Oh no. This was completely outside her realm of knowledge.
