My Wife Always Wants to Run Away - Chapter 15
Jie Xiangyi left quickly, leaving Zhang Yueqi and Tang Jinzhi alone in the room.
Zhang Yueqi began unpacking the takeout he had bought, still grumbling about Jie Xiangyi being too competitive.
“She’s not being competitive on purpose,” Tang Jinzhi defended her. “That’s just how the hospital schedules work.” After a moment’s thought, she sighed deeply. “She works so hard.”
No one wants to work that hard.
Zhang Yueqi nodded in agreement. “True. Once, I ran into Jie Xiangyi at the hospital. She’d been on duty for over 24 hours straight. She said everyone there works like that.”
Tang Jinzhi rubbed her face. “Suddenly, I think you were right about something.”
Zhang Yueqi blinked. “What’s that?”
Tang Jinzhi: “Jie Xiangyi really is a workaholic.”
Zhang Yueqi: “…I’m telling your wife.”
Tang Jinzhi scoffed and changed the subject, switching to a fantasy drama that had caught her eye.
“How about this?” she asked.
Zhang Yueqi glanced up, his hands pausing mid-unboxing. He turned to Tang Jinzhi. “This was super popular before. You haven’t seen it?”
Tang Jinzhi blinked innocently. “Not just this one—I haven’t seen any of them. I lost my memory, remember?”
Zhang Yueqi’s eyes widened. “!”
She had almost forgotten Tang Jinzhi had amnesia!
“Ah! You’re so lucky!”
“Come on, give me the remote!” Zhang Yueqi eagerly snatched the remote from Tang Jinzhi’s hand, still exclaiming, “Oh my god! I wish I could lose my memory and rewatch all the anime, movies, and dramas I’ve seen before!”
Tang Jinzhi raised an eyebrow, thinking her idea was actually quite appealing.
Zhang Yueqi’s eyes lit up. “Let’s start with this historical drama! It’s super popular—you couldn’t escape it during summer vacation!”
Tang Jinzhi nodded. “Okay.”
She reached out to take the food box Zhang Yueqi offered.
“What do you want to drink? I’ll pour it for you,” Zhang Yueqi said. “If they don’t have it here, I’ll order something else.”
Tang Jinzhi glanced down at the neatly unpacked meal in her hand, then back at Zhang Yueqi.
This combination of watching TV together, buying her delicious food, and even unpacking it for her felt like being waited on hand and foot.
They say people don’t offer favors without ulterior motives…
After a moment’s hesitation, Tang Jinzhi asked, “Do you need something from me?”
Zhang Yueqi tilted her head in confusion. “No, why would I?”
Tang Jinzhi paused. If Zhang Yueqi had needed something, she would have found it perfectly normal.
The problem was, Zhang Yueqi didn’t.
Tang Jinzhi had never been treated like this before, and she couldn’t bring herself to accept it with a clear conscience.
She didn’t want to believe Zhang Yueqi was as calculating as she was, but she couldn’t accept his one-sided, unconditional generosity.
If she were Jie Xiangyi, who had grown up with him since childhood, Zhang Yueqi’s actions might seem normal. But she wasn’t; they had only known each other for a few days.
Tang Jinzhi sighed, feeling she was being overly dramatic.
She gestured with the lunchbox in her hand. “You’re really smooth with this.”
Zhang Yueqi didn’t overthink it and quickly explained, “Probably because I did so much of this at home. My mom used to boss me around like that.”
Tang Jinzhi’s lips twitched. Definitely her real mom, she thought.
Zhang Yueqi continued, “And I do this at school too. I guess it’s just a habit now.”
Tang Jinzhi paused, then started chatting casually. “Do you treat your other friends like this too?”
“Mhm, it’s just some food, right? We get good stuff in our dorm every few days, and I’m the one who takes care of it all!” Zhang Yueqi lifted her chin proudly, then frowned, her voice dropping slightly. “But one of my roommates doesn’t like me. She says I’m stupid.”
Tang Jinzhi remained silent for a long moment before asking, “What about your other roommates? How do they treat you?”
She really wanted to be more direct, but she was afraid her malicious assumptions might hurt the innocent Zhang Yueqi.
Zhang Yueqi thought for a moment. “They’re pretty good. We often went out to have fun together at school. They even said they’re coming to visit me here in a few days to travel around.”
Tang Jinzhi popped a grape into her mouth and asked casually, “When you went out, did you always take them to eat good food?”
“Of course! There’s no delicious food I don’t know about!” Zhang Yueqi said with unwavering confidence, sitting cross-legged on the carpet. She typed a message to Jie Xiangyi, saying she wished she could lose her memory too, while munching on snacks.
Only after receiving Jie Xiangyi’s cold reply did she put down her phone.
Then she turned her gaze to Tang Jinzhi, who was staring at her with a complicated expression.
“By the way, do you want to go see the cherry blossoms? I’ve already planned where to take them, and I’ve bought all the tickets. I know tons of fun places!”
Tang Jinzhi choked on her breath. “You bought tickets for everyone?”
Zhang Yueqi nodded. “I bought tickets for all the activities they wanted to do, plus the entrance tickets to the scenic spots. You should come too! Just focus on having fun. After all, your wife doesn’t have time to keep you company.”
Tang Jinzhi didn’t even bother responding to Zhang Yueqi’s teasing. She frowned at him instead.
Unable to resist, she asked, “So, what did they prepare?”
Zhang Yueqi replied, “People.”
Tang Jinzhi’s expression turned serious. “I’m asking what they prepared for you.”
Zhang Yueqi thought for a long time before finally saying, “…Does keeping me company count?”
Tang Jinzhi: “……”
“Have you talked to Jie Xiangyi about them?”
Zhang Yueqi looked puzzled. “Why would I talk about them?”
He added with a hint of accusation, “Besides, Jie Xiangyi never has time to chat with me.”
Tang Jinzhi: “……”
Tang Jinzhi didn’t jump to conclusions based on these brief exchanges, but one thing was clear: Zhang Yueqi was remarkably naive and genuinely enthusiastic.
She sighed softly, refraining from commenting on his situation.
No one likes being lectured out of the blue, and no one wants to hear others criticize their friends.
Silently, Tang Jinzhi pulled out her phone and began texting Jie Xiangyi again. She felt Jie Xiangyi should have been here to hear this conversation.
Tang Jinzhi:Â Is your kid too naive?
Jie Xiangyi:Â What kid?
Tang Jinzhi:Â Zhang Yueqi.
Jie Xiangyi:Â Oh, she said she wanted to lose her memory too. I already told her to get lost.
Tang Jinzhi: […]
Zhang Yueqi waved his hand in front of Tang Jinzhi’s eyes. “What are you thinking about? Are you coming or not?”
Tang Jinzhi blinked, startled. “Coming where?”
Zhang Yueqi rolled his eyes. “To see the cherry blossoms, of course! To hang out.”
Tang Jinzhi shrugged. “I’m not going. I don’t know anyone there, it’ll be awkward.”
Zhang Yueqi’s shoulders slumped. “Fine. Jie Xiangyi never hangs out with me either.”
Tang Jinzhi sighed, trying to comfort him. “That’s because she’s really busy.”
Zhang Yueqi cradled his face in his hands and let out a long sigh. “I know she’s busy. It just feels like I’m the only one of us rich kids who has any free time.”
Tang Jinzhi chuckled softly. “Who even calls themselves a ‘rich kid’?”
Zhang Yueqi: “Oh, we were just talking about my roommates, and I remembered what they call me in their contacts.”
Tang Jinzhi: […]
Tang Jinzhi stared blankly at the sky, silent.
Zhang Yueqi: “Why aren’t you saying anything?”
Tang Jinzhi’s eyes glazed over. “I kind of miss Jie Xiangyi.”
Zhang Yueqi: “Ew~ She just left.”
His eyes darted to his phone, and he quickly texted Jie Xiangyi:Â Your wife says she misses you.
