Chapter 10 – “This Isn’t a Wife Audition! That Pressure Really Hurt…”
Everyone: “…”
Whoa, such a blunt answer. They’d all expected something idealistic like “protect the weak” or “punish evil and uphold justice.”
Guang Bai, Lulu, and Mirla silently gave a “6” gesture — surprising, but somehow totally expected.
He’d said it out loud at the scene last time — that he wanted to sleep with the captain. This kind of unshakable devotion? Tsk, tsk. They were honestly kind of moved.
Mota stared at that line on the enlarged screen, a little caught off guard. His pale gray eyes betrayed a rare trace of helpless amusement.
The application form he’d received that day had been bloodstained in many spots — he’d only skimmed it quickly and missed this part. Who would’ve thought Ling Zhuo had written something like that on it?
This fox… His handwriting was crooked like a child’s, but his words were awfully bold — really knew how to hook someone in.
Mu Jiqiu was quiet for a moment, then turned to ask An Li, “He does realize this is the Execution Division and not some host club, right? We don’t offer… that kind of special service?”
Even if they did, did this kid just walk in and request our top performer?
An Li: …Hiss. Suddenly not so sure.
“Don’t worry, Uncle Mu,” Summer Man, finally snapping out of his shock, flicked his golden bangs out of his face and flashed a confident smile. “Once he lays eyes on me, he’ll be sure this place is a host club~”
Mu Jiqiu: …
…
Two days later, inside the grand Alpha Association base, groups of newly accepted interns were being ushered in batch by batch.
Most newcomers looked around excitedly, some even whispering about whether they might run into Captain Mota — maybe get a signature or something. Their eyes sparkled with anticipation.
Ling Zhuo was dressed in black workwear, a matching black baseball cap pulled low. Carrying a backpack, he silently followed a group of much taller people — half worrying about the siblings he’d left behind in Zone E, and half eager to see Mota again.
He’d only passed the screening phase; the official trial would be held after seven days. Only then would his acceptance be confirmed. He planned to bring his younger siblings over once he was officially in.
With his head down most of the way, Ling Zhuo didn’t notice that his striking good looks were attracting plenty of backward glances.
Of course, anyone who got the urge to flirt would be immediately scared off the next second by the cold, sharp expression on his face.
He also didn’t notice someone walking right beside him — one of the few people in the group slightly shorter than him. An alpha, dressed in black too, with a long, cloth-wrapped item slung across his back.
Black hair, black eyes, dark circles under those eyes, and pale, handsome features. He looked like someone who hadn’t seen sunlight or slept properly in years.
The group followed the HR supervisor into a building. With each floor they went up, the group thinned out. By the time they reached the floor of the Execution Division, only five people were left.
An Li led them into a small meeting room beside the main office, then left with her clipboard.
The five glanced at one another, then found seats.
Ling Zhuo instinctively picked a seat in the corner, away from everyone else.
He rarely rode in vehicles, and the long trip from Zone E had made him nauseous and dizzy. His stomach churned painfully.
Feeling sick always made him cranky. He’d been frowning the entire way, barely holding it together. Only now, hearing Mota’s voice from the adjacent office, did he feel a little better. His lips curled up without him noticing.
Finally, I can be with my human again~
As he tilted his head to sneak a peek toward the doorway, he absentmindedly pressed a hand to his aching stomach — and suddenly, a hand appeared beside him.
“Here.”
It was the black-haired boy who’d been walking next to him earlier. Apparently, he also preferred sitting in corners.
His expression remained listless, long eyelashes casting shadows under his eyes as he avoided looking directly at Ling Zhuo — instead staring at the translucent blue peppermint candy in his hand.
The boy was so good-looking, he felt guilty for even glancing at him — like just looking might be too much.
Ling Zhuo stared at the candy too, brows furrowed, looking curious and guarded like a small animal discovering something new. He leaned forward slightly, sniffing the air with his nose crinkled.
The scent was cool and slightly sweet — definitely a candy.
As the minty aroma reached his nose, he was surprised to find his headache easing.
He looked up at the other boy in mild astonishment. “Is this… for me?”
Candy was rare in his household. Back when they were living deep in the mountains, the only candy he’d ever had was some white, milky one that his eldest brother brought back.
After turning human, just getting enough to eat was a struggle — never mind buying sweets. He’d practically forgotten about candy altogether. Only in the past few years, after adapting to human society and earning money, had he occasionally bought some for his siblings — but only the same kind his brother had brought home. He’d never tried anything else.
He was delighted. His blue eyes sparkled as he looked at the pale boy beside him. The latter gave a small nod, eyes averted. “Mm. For you.”
His soft black hair looked well-kept. He seemed like a good kid.
Ling Zhuo unwrapped the candy and popped it into his mouth. The cool, sweet taste spread instantly.
He liked it. Propping his chin in his hand, he squinted contentedly and mumbled, “Actually, I have candy in my bag too, but it was expensive and I didn’t want to eat it. It’s a gift for my human~”
He’d carefully picked it out at the supermarket.
All thanks to his fourth brother, who had said he saw new teachers at school bring welcome gifts when reporting in — said it made people get along better.
Ling Zhuo didn’t care about getting along with others, so he only prepared something for Mota.
My human? the pale boy thought in confusion. What a weird way to put it. But he simply nodded softly, without asking questions — though his fingers twisted nervously, like there was something else he wanted to say.
In the Execution Division office, Mirla’s computer was livestreaming the footage from the meeting room.
Summer Man watched the screen and clicked his tongue. “Dear Captain Mota, I have a feeling this competition will be fierce~”
Someone’s already offering him candy? Trouble incoming! But…
“He really seems to love sweets, huh? Look how happy he is from one piece,” Summer Man leaned in close, his elegant fingers tapping Ling Zhuo’s face through the screen. “Eyes squinting like a cat. So cute. I think Cupid just shot me straight in the heart~”
He clutched his chest dramatically. Mota, leaning against the desk and reviewing patrol assignments, didn’t even look up. “Need me to call Medical for a chest surgery?”
Summer Man: “…That was a metaphor!”
“Captain Mota, Captain Summer,” An Li pushed open the glass door and tilted her head. “The candidates are in the meeting room.”
“Thanks,” Mota handed the task file to Lulu and stood to head over.
Summer Man grabbed the applicants’ files and followed, whispering gleefully to his teammates, “He’s flustered~”
Guang Bai and Lulu, about to leave the room, couldn’t help but yell, “Captain, you got this!”
Team Two wouldn’t be outdone — they immediately cheered too: “Go, Captain Summer! You’re the brightest star today!”
An Li rolled her eyes so hard they nearly hit the ceiling. “Chill out, you over-hormonal idiots. This is a recruitment meeting, not a dating show. Don’t scare off the newbies!”
President Mu Jiqiu sipped his coffee peacefully next to Mirla’s monitor. “Ah~ Youth…”
Onscreen, Mota and Summer Man entered the room. The new recruits immediately sat up straighter.
Ling Zhuo instantly regretted picking a seat in the far corner — it was way too far from Mota!
Mota was wearing that same black uniform shirt Ling Zhuo remembered — only without the sword at his waist this time, and his presence wasn’t nearly as intense.
Speaking of that sword, Ling Zhuo instinctively touched his throat. The place where the blade had pressed still ached — especially since he’d been wearing a metal collar at the time. The pressure on his throat had hurt like hell.
Today he wore a thin velvet ribbon instead to cover his gland.
That mechanical, color-changing fake chameleon — the one that had once blinded him like a flashlight — was still on Mota’s shoulder. Its opal-like eyes were fixed directly on him, whether on purpose or not.
Ling Zhuo didn’t like it.
Why does it get to stay on Mota?!
Narrowing his eyes at it, the fox glared back fiercely, willing it to get away from his human.
Sensing hostility, the chameleon suddenly arched its neck and its skin shifted colors rapidly, settling on a watery pink. Then it crawled a little forward and nudged its head under Mota’s chin, like it was saying, “Brother, look, he’s being mean to me~”
“…”
Ling Zhuo gritted his teeth.
That stupid lizard was just like that clingy little white dog that used to stick to Mota. Disgusting!
“Hmph. Do all humans only like obedient types?” he muttered under his breath.
The black-haired boy next to him thought he was being spoken to. He leaned in slightly and replied softly, “Probably. Otherwise they’ll hate you, hit you, or even sell you.”
When he was little, every time he got beaten, his father told him it was because he wasn’t obedient enough.
“Ah…” Ling Zhuo instantly deflated.
So Mota left because he wasn’t obedient?
Both boys were lost in painful memories. The corner of the room suddenly felt heavy and dark.
Mota brushed the chameleon off his cheek and glanced their way. The two were sitting very close, chatting with their heads tilted together. The baseball cap hid their expressions, but they looked… intimate.
A flicker of displeasure flashed through Mota’s chest: Does this fox get this cozy with everyone?
“Welcome to the Execution Division,” Summer Man greeted them brightly, instantly drawing all eyes. “I’m Captain Summer Man of Team Two…”
Before he could finish, someone blurted out excitedly, “Wait, the Mux family?!”
“Yes, that Mux family — global pharma giant, biggest gold reserve owner, richer than nations,” Summer Man confirmed with a cheeky grin, then bowed like a gentleman. “Full-time heir of unimaginable wealth. Part-time executioner of justice~”
The room erupted in shocked exclamations. Even the pale boy beside Ling Zhuo looked up in astonishment.
Only Ling Zhuo, still sucking on his candy, looked bored and grumpy. That long list of titles meant nothing to him — it was beyond his comprehension.
Summer Man (confidently): He’s clearly stunned into awe~
He pointed to the man beside him. “As for this guy, I’m sure you’ve all heard the name — I won’t even introduce him~”
“Huh?” Ling Zhuo made a disappointed noise.
He wanted to hear Mota’s introduction!
That reaction was too clear — both team captains turned to look at him. The blond one winked teasingly, and the brown-haired one paused briefly, then looked away and said:
“Mota. Captain of Team One.”
More gasps and exclamations followed. Even though everyone already knew his name, seeing him in person was still a thrill.
A wide-eyed young man in the front quickly raised his hand: “Captain Mota’s my savior! He single-handedly stopped the F-Zone mutant outbreak! Youngest S-rank alpha in the League! He even took down the Night Herald’s boss, Qin Mo, and sent him to the deep-sea prison…”
His voice was full of admiration — loud, clear, and proud. By the end, his voice faded, and his cheeks turned red. “I… I wanted to become an executioner because of Captain Mota.”
“Ha,” Summer Man chuckled and clapped. “Jiang Yizhi, right? Captain Mota, you really do get around, huh? But this isn’t story time — let’s take roll call and get to know each other~”
As the handsome blond alpha flipped through the roster, Ling Zhuo sat frozen, thunderstruck.
He couldn’t tell it was a joke. The phrase “Captain Mota gets around” echoed in his mind, overlapping with something he misheard from Lulu — “our captain’s slept with tons of people” — and his mood plummeted off a cliff.
With a loud thud, he suddenly stood up.
