Chapter 23 – “Losing Control! I Need to See Him!
Captain Mu Jiqiu cleared his throat in the control room and spoke with measured calm:
“Jiang Yizhi and Mei Jiuhe have passed their evaluations. Prepare to assign them to a team. Ask Noah and Brett if they’d like to join the patrol division. As for Ling Zhuo…”
Everyone in the control room held their breath as he paused. The atmosphere suddenly felt tense.
Mu removed his single-lens gold-rim glasses and wiped them softly before continuing:
“He harmed a rescue target, used them like hostages, and violated exam rules… regrettably, I cannot let someone like that pass.”
“Chairman!” An Li and Xia Man both protested at once, “But he’s S-rank…”
Mu smiled faintly, still calm. “Yes, S‑class is rare. But in him, I see no devotion—or submission.”
Even the fiercest beast, if not chained, risks turning on its master. Mota had once been that beast—bound with Sky-Bird glands to serve the Association.
Mu paused. Mota, silent until now, tensed at the word “submission.”
Despite the accusation, Xia Man replied gently and sincerely:
“Chairman… he doesn’t need to submit to anyone, even as an Omega. Please respect him.”
Mu paused and nodded. “Apologies. You’re right.”
He continued: “But don’t worry—I’m not discarding him. He appears unstable now. S‑rank Omegas are rare. I intend to keep him at the base for further study.”
Meaning: he would not be assigned to the Execution Department—or any other. He’d remain as a “specimen.”
Two teams were outraged silently. Mu’s tone made it sound like they were locking him up like a test subject.
Mota turned and fixed his piercing gaze on the chairman. A silent pressure fell over the room; Mu’s fingers curled slightly.
To defuse the tension, Xia Man stepped between them with grace:
“Chairman Mu, if you’re keeping him, wouldn’t staying in our department suit him better? Mota and I can look after him, right, Captain Mo~”
He glanced at Mota for reassurance; though half his face was in shadow, the man radiated lethal composure.
Mu sighed and smirked: “You youngsters… always afraid to act—eventually it’ll bite you.”
Xia Man joked: “Don’t worry—fortune-tellers say I’ll never suffer in this life! So I’ll be fine~”
The room lightened. Though Mu never relented, he nodded them out: “Go ahead. Announce the results.”
Xia Man and An Li filed out. Mota remained behind. Mu looked back with calm expectation:
“Shall we talk in my office?”
He led the way. Mota, sharp as a blade with suppressed intensity, followed.
…
In the simulation city’s intersection, Ling Zhuo noticed someone approaching and turned eagerly—but froze when he saw Captain Xia Mán. His blue eyes dimmed in disappointment.
Bl00d stained his white face; red droplets looked like distant blush. He looked fragile and forlorn.
Xia Mán saw him and bit his lip. He felt sorry for the messy, beautiful boy.
Guang Wu and Sajin were behind. They had already been told the evaluation results and looked torn.
Xia Mán sighed softly: “Fine, I’ll be the bad guy here…”
Sajin whispered encouragement: “Stay strong, Captain—you looked amazing today!”
Xia Mán, unmoved, led them forward:
“Jiang Yizhi and Mei Jiuhe passed the evaluation. Noah and Brett, you may request transfer to other departments. As for Ling Zhuo… you must remain at the base and may not go out.”
He recapped the chairman’s words. Everyone turned to Ling Zhuo.
“But he’s amazing—how could he fail?”
“Why wasn’t he accepted, Chairman?”
Noah and Brett, still coated in bird droppings, blurted the questions without tact.
Ling Zhuo froze. He had saved them all—he killed the mutants. Why was he rejected? Did failing this mean he couldn’t join Execution? Why must he stay at the base? Why couldn’t he go out? What about his younger siblings?
His mind swirled with anger and confusion.
When he finally spoke, the words tumbled out:
“Where is Mota? I want to see him.”
His pale fox eyes searched the golden-haired Alpha, panicked.
Xia Mán’s voice softened: “Don’t worry. Go back to the dorm. Mota will come to you.”
Mota will come? Ling Zhuo blinked blankly. He remembered five years ago: Mota said “be good” before departing—but never returned.
“No… he wouldn’t… he wouldn’t come find me…”
He spoke like a broken heart—his body chilled. He shivered, breathing quick and harsh. A violent impulse flared—I should destroy this place.
He forced his will to stop. Glaring back at Xia Mán, he repeated:
“Where is Mota? I want to see him!”
As if grasping at a lifeline.
“You must go back first… he will come…”
But hearing this only made him angrier.
Suddenly, the sound of rushing water filled his ears—the voices of others faded. Jiang Yizhi’s mocking laughter rang clear:
“I told you not to bother. See? I was right~”
Ling Zhuo turned toward the voice and found Jiang Yizhi wearing a smug expression.
Everyone else seemed unaware of Ling Zhuo’s earlier questions—they all looked at him.
Ling Zhuo’s chaotic thoughts stuttered. But then those soft lips spoke, each word a dagger:
“Mo… ta… hates… you.”
His breath stopped. His eyes widened and bloodshot.
Mota… hates me?
The delicate fox froze. Only Jiang Yizhi realized and took a step back—but in that moment, an alarm sounded overhead:
…
Warning: S‑Rank energy fluctuation detected from Ling Zhuo. High risk of loss‐of‐control. Aggressive intent: 70‑80%. Evacuate immediately! Protective measures activating in 30… 29… 28…
The dome ceiling dimmed red, warning lights blinked citywide. Xia Mán shouted:
“Sajin, alert medical—get sedatives and tranquilizers!”
But Mota’s head snapped up as Ling Zhuo, standing at the crossroads, rose. His red fox ears and tail snapped out—drenched in bl00d, his gaze locked on Jiang Yizhi.
Jiang Yizhi froze in fear—his legs turned rubbery.
Bl00d seeped into the ground. Crimson bramble tails grew swiftly behind Ling Zhuo—nine in all, thrashing like living snakes.
Mutant traits unfurled. Brett gasped: “Holy—a mess—he’s an Omega?!”
“S”quealed Noah.
“Ling Zhuo! Calm down!” Mei Jiuhe had been turning away, but hearing Ling Zhuo lose control, he stopped and shouted: “I’ll go with you to find Mota!”
If Ling Zhuo lost control and killed—he’d stand trial! Mei leapt forward but was intercepted by Xia Mán.
Xia Mán saw Ling Zhuo’s intent: Jiang Yizhi. He said only, “Don’t interfere,” and dashed back to base.
He flipped a gold card as he moved: he might use “luck” ability to protect the team—but facing an S‑rank Omega’s unleashed power, he felt uncertain.
With Ling Zhuo’s thorn-tails raised overhead, Xia Mán yelled:
“No time! Jiang Yizhi! Don’t just stand there—run!”
Just then, the sound of tearing rent the air; the twisted brambles cracked ominously.
Noah and Brett shut their eyes. Jiang Yizhi, unable to move, stared wide-eyed into doom.
