- Chapter 29 - It's Just Like A Violation. He Might Actually Be Angry
Chapter 29: It’s just like a violation. He might actually be angry.
Annoyed, he waved his hand and sent the two personalities back, decreeing that the second personality would have to “guard the house” for a while as punishment. Seething but helpless, the second personality returned to the guest room in a huff, and the white wooden door closed with a soft click.
Click.
The doorknob turned. Ling Zhuo, who had rushed home under the stars, pushed open his front door. The room looked no different than when he’d left. He stood in the dark, scanning his territory. The living room was tidy and the floor was clean, but the fifth brother, who had been in the fishbowl, was gone.
The house was quiet. He pricked up his fox ears and listened carefully for any suspicious sounds. Only after confirming there was nothing amiss did he step inside. He turned and locked the door without a moment’s hesitation, walking straight to the closet in his bedroom. With a whoosh, he slid the door open.
Inside, there were only a few pieces of clothing, but in the large space below, his third brother was huddled in a corner with his fifth brother clinging to him. His fourth brother was leaning against him, while his sister sat closest to the front, her cat-like eyes wide with vigilance, like a little lioness on the hunt. Besides Ling Zhuo, she had the highest combat power in the family. Normally, she was a clumsy little kitten, but when she got serious, she was surprisingly dependable.
The little ones had smelled the pheromones on Ling Zhuo the moment he came in. Luckily, they’d smelled it before on the jacket he’d brought back, so they weren’t startled. When the closet door opened, they didn’t scream, but simply hunched their shoulders and looked up at the person with a pair of round, wide eyes. The pheromone scent made them assume it was the human from before, but when they looked up and saw familiar red hair, they got excited.
“Second Brother!”
The kids shouted with joy, one by one tumbling out of the closet. Even the usually arrogant third brother couldn’t help but run forward, and the fifth brother let out a happy little squeal, eagerly pawing at his brother’s trouser leg.
His strong little sister dropped her tough facade and burst into tears, wrapping her arms around him. “Waaah! Second Brother… you’re finally back… Third Brother almost died…”
Her concept of life and death was still stuck in a wild animal’s mindset, where even a small injury could lead to death. His fourth brother, the same age, also clung to Ling Zhuo’s leg, his pale little face streaked with tears as he mournfully asked, “Waaah… when Third Brother dies, can I make him into a specimen?”
Ling Shang, who was only injured and definitely not dying, said, “You idiot, stop crying. I told you I’m fine…” Despite his words, he held on tightly to his second brother.
Ling Zhuo fumbled to catch his younger siblings. With his hands full, he had to let his tail do the work, using it to gently pat each of their heads. He felt a wave of self-reproach. “I’m sorry, I came home late. I won’t leave you alone for so long again.”
With him there, they all felt at ease. As Ling Zhuo re-bandaged the third brother’s wound, his fourth sister sat beside him, chattering nonstop. She asked if Area C was fun, then said the school teachers’ lessons were too confusing and that P.E. was the best. As she talked, she suddenly remembered to explain what happened to her brother.
“That person who wanted to catch Third Brother was so strange. He was wrapped in bandages that could lash out like whips and get longer…” She gestured with her hands as she spoke, then smacked her lips together, her expression conflicted. “But the person smelled like cola, Second Brother. I want to drink cola.”
“Okay, I’ll buy you some after you’ve had a good sleep.”
Ling Shang sat quietly and let his brother tend to his wound. He heard his brother promise to get his sister a drink, then turned to ask, “What exactly happened?” He shook his head in confusion.
“I don’t know either. I was just going to the market as usual. That person suddenly appeared on the street. I accidentally bumped into him, and he left without saying anything. Then I ran into him again at the market.”
The person was wearing loose black clothes, with a small black bell on a leather belt around their waist. Their exposed hands and face were wrapped in white bandages. It was an unmistakable outfit. Ling Shang immediately recognized the strange person he had bumped into, but he hadn’t yet realized the person was following him, so he didn’t think much of it and simply walked away with his groceries.
On the way home, he realized the person was following him. When the person noticed he was looking, they unwrapped one of the bandages on their hand. There was no skin underneath, just exposed red muscle and dark blue veins. It was the first time Ling Shang had seen a hand like that without it bleeding. He froze, and in the blink of an eye, the white bandage had whipped toward him. It was so fast that even with his quick reaction, the cloth still left a large gash on his hand.
Realizing this person was trying to catch him, Ling Shang’s first instinct was to run, but then a flying strip of cloth hit his leg, making him fall. His fourth sister, who had snuck out of school to play, happened to see it and, seeing her brother being bullied, charged over aggressively.
The person saw them and suddenly gave a strange smile, then left. It was all very strange—they attacked out of nowhere, then left just as suddenly. His sister was angry and wanted to chase after them to beat them up, but she saw how much bl00d her brother was losing. She thought he was going to die and sat on the ground crying in despair. In the end, Ling Shang had to endure the pain to comfort her.
“It sounds like he was specifically following you. And that copper bell…” Ling Zhuo finished tightening the bandage, a frown on his face. “I remember Minister An Li saying that everyone from the Deathbird organization has a ‘death bell’…”
If it was that organization, his siblings were in great danger. They had to move immediately. Luckily, he had already been planning to move. There was no time to waste. He wanted to go out and call Aunt Wu to see if she knew of any cheap places for rent in Area C, but his siblings hadn’t seen him in days and were clinging to him tightly. He could only sit on the sofa and let them hug him as he quietly made the call.
The association provided dorms for its official employees, but they were all single-person rooms. And the President had said he would restrict Ling Zhuo’s access and prevent him from leaving, so he didn’t want to bring his siblings to the base. He had a feeling that one day, his dorm would turn into a cage. He would much rather his siblings be able to run free in a grassy field.
The call with Aunt Wu didn’t last long. She readily agreed to contact her friends about potential rentals. Knowing he was in a hurry, she promised to give him an answer by tomorrow night at the latest. She also congratulated him on his new position.
“If you ever run into danger in the future, Little Zhuo, you have to come and protect your aunt!” she said with a bright laugh before hanging up.
Ling Zhuo promised he would. When he put his phone away, he realized his siblings had all fallen asleep, nestled against him. The tension from the evening had completely drained from them once their brother returned, and they were sleeping soundly.
Ling Zhuo gently carried each of them to their beds and tucked them in. He, however, did not sleep. He changed his clothes, leaving the shirt that had Motta’s pheromones at home, and headed out into the night. Moving was one thing, but letting the scumbag who had hurt his family get away with it was not his style.
The fox, shrouded in the darkness, entered a hunting mode, silently moving through the streets and alleys. He followed the route his siblings had described, carefully distinguishing the lingering scent of cola in the air. By the time dawn broke, he still hadn’t found the person, but he had a good idea of their general location.
During the day, there were too many people, making it difficult to act. The rising sun was blinding, and after being chilled by the night wind, his body felt warm and sluggish, making him exceptionally sleepy. Ling Zhuo bought a cola and some breakfast, then curled up on the sofa and lazily slept for the rest of the day.
He had left his phone in a crack in the sofa and forgotten to charge it. It had automatically turned off around noon, causing him to miss a call from the association.
At the Execution Department office, a group of tall, sharp, and handsome alphas looked at each other, listening to the “The user you are calling is currently powered off” message from An Li’s phone. After a moment of silence, they began to speculate:
“Did he suddenly change his mind and not want to do it anymore?”
“Possibly. Our job is to deal with monsters every day, and we have to be ready for missions at a moment’s notice. It’s tough.”
“That can’t be right. Didn’t he say he wanted to sleep with Captain Mo?”
As soon as Guang Ba said this, everyone turned in unison to look at the handsome man leaning against the table, their eyes narrowing mischievously. “Or have you guys already slept together?”
They wouldn’t normally dare to ask something like that, but the situation was unique, and they immediately took the opportunity to satisfy their curiosity. Motta felt a rare moment of guilt. He put his hand on the hilt of his sword, replaying yesterday in his mind. That little bit of contact, surely it doesn’t count as ‘sleeping with,’ right? After all, he didn’t touch me, I didn’t bite his gland and inject my pheromones, didn’t mark him, and didn’t enter him… Wait, what was I thinking about entering him?
No, no, now is not the time for that. I need to figure out where the fox went.
Motta silently shook his head as a response. Everyone turned back, propped their chins on their hands, and continued to guess.
“Then why did he disappear without leaving a message?”
“Maybe he ran into an emergency?”
“Oh, right, I almost forgot. Milra, check the surveillance footage.”
“But…” Xia Man, sitting on a luxurious sofa chair in the office, elegantly crossed one leg over the other and tapped his temple. He said with a knowing look, “When I went to look for him yesterday, I smelled a very strong scent of a certain someone’s pheromones on him~”
“His neck was also red. And since he’s an omega, being treated like that by an alpha is just like a violation. He might actually be angry~”
“If he’s angry, maybe he changed his mind and doesn’t want to stay here anymore~”
His melodious voice delivered words like daggers, stabbing right at Motta. The alpha, with no experience in romance, was taken aback.
So that’s what it was?
A blur of eyelashes flickered over his icy gray eyes. Motta’s expression looked a bit frozen. He was already 80% convinced that Ling Zhuo’s abrupt departure was because of him. He was speechless. His concern had muddled his mind, causing him to be misled by Xia Man’s words and to miss the barely-suppressed smile on the other man’s face.
What do you do in a situation like this?
The brown-haired alpha lowered his head, his handsome eyebrows furrowed. On the outside, he was still the calm and composed strongest executioner, but inside, his mind was in chaos. His two suppressed personalities heard that they had made their “wife” angry and were now frantically brainstorming.
Third Personality: “[My wife is angry, what do we do?]”
Fourth Personality, with murder on his mind: “[Who made him angry? I’ll go kill him.]”
Third Personality: “[Motta. He’s guarding the house now.]”
Fourth Personality, still murderous: “[Then we’ll go back and kill him.]”
The third personality was slow to process. He dazedly chimed in. “[I’ll go too.]”
That was the extent of their planning.
Motta, who had been listening in to see if they had any good ideas, was speechless. Just as I thought, both of them have issues. They don’t think in any normal way.
An Li had come to help the three new recruits with their paperwork and moving arrangements. Jiang Yi Zhi and Mei Jiu He had finished most of their tasks in the morning, and after arranging for a car to take them home to pack, she went to look for Ling Zhuo, who hadn’t shown up. She knocked on his dorm room door but got no response. Since it was their first day, new recruits were given some leeway, so An Li initially thought he was just resting and didn’t disturb him.
But when he still hadn’t come by the afternoon, she became worried he might be sick. She went back to the dorm and saw he wasn’t there, so she came to the Execution Department to find him. It was only then that she realized these busy people hadn’t even noticed he was missing and had assumed she had everything sorted. Now, his phone was also off. An Li looked at these young men who only knew how to kill monsters and couldn’t offer a single useful suggestion. She couldn’t help but roll her eyes. “What about your dog tags? Don’t they have a tracking chip?”
“!!!” The words were like a jolt of lightning, especially for Motta. He was the one who had put the metal tag on Ling Zhuo himself. He had been so distracted by everyone’s theories that he had forgotten all about it.
“Haha~” It was the first time Xia Man had seen him so flustered, and he couldn’t help but laugh out loud. He had thought of the tracking chip long ago, having seen Ling Zhuo wearing it on his neck just yesterday, but he had a perverse desire to see Motta squirm.
Motta, having remembered, immediately opened his phone to check. “He’s in Area E. He must have gone home. I’m going to find him.” He confirmed the location and immediately set off.
