My Wife is the Vicious Supporting Character from an Era Novel - Chapter 2
Chapter 2
â—ŽConflict at the Educated Youth Pointâ—Ž
Ji Baiqing left after taking Wen Miao to the educated youth point.
Wen Miao stood there, thoughtfully watching her retreating back for a moment before entering the house.
The educated youth point was a dilapidated mud-brick house, not very big, with two rooms in total. The female and male educated youths lived in separate rooms, and there was a washroom in the backyard and an open kitchen in the front yard.
When Wen Miao entered, she saw Shen Niannian and Lu Yan standing together, talking about something. The woman was smiling cheerfully, but the man’s expression was cold.
Her entrance also caught their attention. This was the first time Wen Miao had shown her true face to Lu Yan. Seeing the admiration in Lu Yan’s eyes, Shen Niannian squeezed her palm, hiding her inner jealousy, and asked Wen Miao with a concerned smile:
“Miaomiao, are you okay? Lu Yan, the other educated youths, and I were so worried about you after you fainted.”
Lu Yan saw Wen Miao’s outstanding appearance, and his dissatisfaction with her picky behavior on the way here dissipated a little. He nodded reservedly.
In response, Wen Miao just glanced at Shen Niannian, not bothering to talk to them, and went straight into the room on the left. The door was open, and she saw another female educated youth, Pan Hongxia, inside.
Lu Yan was displeased at being ignored. He secretly blamed Shen Niannian for bringing him up just now, which resulted in a cold shoulder. He didn’t even say hello to Shen Niannian and immediately turned around and went back to his room.
Shen Niannian stood there awkwardly, biting her lip and stamping her foot fiercely.
After entering the room, Pan Hongxia also greeted Wen Miao. Wen Miao didn’t have as much of a problem with her as she did with Shen Niannian, but she wasn’t particularly friendly either.
The room wasn’t big, with three people sleeping on a large communal bed. Shen Niannian and the others had already taken two spots, leaving a spot by the window. The window glass was cracked, and the roof tiles were leaking light. She touched the straw on the bed, and it was still wet.
Wen Miao took a deep breath. At this moment, she was truly grateful for the candy that Ji Baiqing had given her, otherwise she was afraid she would have really fainted.
“The roof is leaking. How are we supposed to sleep?” Pan Hongxia sat on her side, also a little embarrassed.
“Originally, Fang Haiyang and the others said they would sleep in this room, and the other room wasn’t leaking. But Shen Niannian said that since we three girls are thin, we can squeeze together and not get wet from the rain.”
After listening, Wen Miao directly threw Shen Niannian’s quilt to the spot by the window, spread out her own luggage, and slowly began to organize it.
When she was almost done, Shen Niannian opened the door, poked her head in, and said with a smile, “I’m almost done making dinner. Come out and eat.”
But when she saw Wen Miao sitting in the spot she had personally picked out and her quilt thrown by the leaking window, her expression froze for a moment.
“Wen Miao, I picked this spot first. Don’t you think it’s a little too much that you threw my quilt there?” Shen Niannian glared at Wen Miao and asked through gritted teeth.
Wen Miao lazily looked up at her, with the corners of her eyes slightly upturned. She had just eaten some pastries, so her face had a much better color now, making her already beautiful appearance even more striking.
She curled her lips, “Shen Niannian, didn’t you say you’d live in this room? Since you said it, it’s only right that you should sleep in the leaking spot.”
Shen Niannian’s eyes were filled with venom as she looked at her. Then she saw the jade broken in half on Wen Miao’s pillow.
On the way from Beijing to Wuyuan City, passing through Shanghai, Shen Niannian’s seat on the train happened to be next to Wen Miao’s. On the train, she accidentally discovered a jade pendant of a goldfish around Wen Miao’s neck. The carving was exquisite, and the jade was of a superior quality, like mutton fat. Out of curiosity, she wanted Wen Miao to take it off and let her look at it.
But Wen Miao was so stingy that she wouldn’t even let her look at it!
Shen Niannian was willful, but she had a sweet tongue. Even though her parents were patriarchal, she still lived a comfortable life. The more she couldn’t get something, the more she wanted it. So, while Wen Miao was sleeping, she secretly untied the red string from her neck.
She was admiring the jade pendant when it slipped from her hand and fell to the ground, instantly breaking into two halves.
When Wen Miao woke up, the first thing she noticed was that the pendant she had worn since childhood was gone. She immediately suspected Shen Niannian, who had been pestering her earlier, especially since Shen Niannian’s eyes held a guilty look.
After finding the broken jade in her pocket, Wen Miao looked at Shen Niannian coldly. Shen Niannian decided to just give up and said brazenly: “Who told you not to let me see it! If you had shown it to me earlier, it wouldn’t have been broken by me!”
Wen Miao directly slapped Shen Niannian in front of the other people on the train, making her lose face. She didn’t care what others thought and thus started a feud with Shen Niannian.
Over the past few days on the train, the other educated youths could tell that they were not on good terms.
Now that Wen Miao was being so disrespectful, Shen Niannian, who was already angry, rushed over, grabbed the two pieces of broken jade on her pillow, and smashed them onto the floor.
She said viciously, “I picked this spot first. Why are you stealing it from me? Is it just because you’re pretty? We’re not competing on looks here in the countryside. Do you think everyone has to accommodate your temper?!”
Wen Miao looked at the jade pieces that were now covered in dust and slowly shifted her gaze to Shen Niannian. Her eyes were dark and bottomless, making one shiver.
Slap! A powerful slap landed on Shen Niannian’s face again. Her face instantly swelled up, and she stumbled backward, falling to the ground.
Shen Niannian covered her face and screamed, tears instantly flowing down.
Pan Hongxia looked on in a daze and said hesitantly, “Wen Miao, Shen Niannian, stop fighting…”
The two rooms were not far apart, and the male educated youths heard the commotion and came to check on the situation.
“Educated Youth Shen, what’s wrong?” Wu Yanqing stood at the door, looking worriedly into the room.
When Shen Niannian saw the people who had come, she covered her face and cried pitifully, looking very wronged. But the two women on the side, one was like a tree stump, standing there awkwardly, and the other looked as if she wanted to slap her a few more times.
Wu Yanqing felt a pang of sympathy when he saw her tear-streaked face and immediately entered the room to help her up. “Are the two of you bullying Educated Youth Shen?”
Shen Niannian immediately stopped her tears and said with a wronged expression, “No, I just accidentally fell.”
Hearing Shen Niannian trying to cover for them, Wu Yanqing became even more angry. “Then what about the injury on your face? Did you do that to yourself?”
“Educated Youth Shen, tell us what’s wrong. We’ll stand up for you.” At this time, Fang Haiyang and Lu Yan also entered the room and looked at Pan Hongxia and Wen Miao with cold, blaming eyes.
Wen Miao bent down to pick up her things and lightly glanced at them.
“Why are you big men entering our women’s room?”
Fang Haiyang’s heart had been stirred by her clear and beautiful eyes, but when he heard her disrespectful words, he was instantly displeased.
“Aren’t you bullying Educated Youth Shen? How can two women bully one little girl?”
Pan Hongxia stammered for a long time, her face turning red, before finally saying, “It wasn’t me, I didn’t do anything.”
She quietly moved toward Shen Niannian, and in an instant, only Wen Miao was left, facing the other five people.
Wen Miao’s fingertips stiffened, and then she scoffed, her tone becoming colder, “Yes, I bullied her. So what? Are you going to hit me?”
“You!” Lu Yan looked at Wen Miao’s brazen appearance, and his teeth ached. He pointed at her but couldn’t say a single word for a long time.
“Educated Youth Lu, I just wanted to call Wen Miao out for dinner. I didn’t expect things to get this bad… Oh, Educated Youth Wen definitely didn’t do it on purpose. Don’t blame her.”
Wu Yanqing felt sorry for Shen Niannian and snorted with a dark face, “She has the face of a temptress and a wolf’s heart. What a waste of her looks.”
Wen Miao sneered, “Yes, unlike you, who not only have a pig’s face but also a pig’s brain.”
“Now get out. Just looking at you pollutes my eyes.”
This one sentence offended the remaining four educated youths, but they couldn’t just hit Wen Miao. In the end, the five of them had no choice but to leave the room resentfully to go eat. Since Wen Miao had that attitude, she didn’t deserve to eat the meal Shen Niannian cooked.
Pan Hongxia secretly glanced at Wen Miao before she left. Wen Miao didn’t even look up when she noticed her gaze.
After Wen Miao finished tidying up the last of her things in the room, she caressed the broken jade in her hand. This was something her deceased mother had left for her. She had always cherished it, but it was broken by Shen Niannian on the train.
Because of this, she and Shen Niannian couldn’t live in peace. As for the others… Wen Miao scoffed. They were just a bunch of idiots.
She had an outstanding family background and grew up with everyone’s attention. Even after her father, Li Wenyu, remarried and had a son and ignored her, she was still taken care of by her grandmother’s family.
She just wasn’t careful and fell into the trap set by him and her stepmother. She was tricked into going to the countryside without any chance of backing out.
Putting the two halves of the goldfish together, Wen Miao thought to herself that she had to find a way to go home soon. There was no way she would let Li Wenyu’s family live a peaceful and happy life. She suddenly remembered the country woman from today, Ji Baiqing. She said she was the village party secretary’s daughter.
…
Ji Baiqing slowly went home after registering everyone’s work points. As she reached the door, she smelled a powerful, delicious aroma. She sniffed her nose. It smelled like stewed chicken.
“Mom, what are you making? It smells so good.” Ji Baiqing said with a giggle as she stood at the kitchen door.
He Xiangyue glared at her in annoyance. “If you shout any louder, the whole village will know we’re eating meat!”
Ji Baiqing rubbed her nose. It wasn’t easy to eat meat in this era, but her parents were capable. Other people might not eat meat for half a year, but her family could eat something with meat every three to five days. So, they had to be low-key and hide it, otherwise, they would be reported.
But Ji Baiqing was their only child, and He Xiangyue still doted on her. After closing the kitchen door, she opened the pot, and the delicious scent of chicken and chestnuts instantly filled the air. She scooped up a chicken leg for Ji Baiqing. “Take this chicken leg and eat it over there. Don’t bother me.”
Ji Baiqing’s eyes curved into a smile, and she hugged He Xiangyue for a while.
There were two things she was happiest about since transmigrating into the book. One was that she could see Wen Miao, and the other was that she had a pair of loving parents. In her previous life, she was an orphan who had to make it on her own. After transmigrating into the book, she finally felt the warmth of having caring parents.
She sniffed the aroma and suddenly remembered Wen Miao. The plot from the original book also came to mind. Wen Miao would be isolated by the other five educated youths today and would be alone from now on.
Thinking about this, Ji Baiqing felt a pang of sympathy. She looked at the chicken leg in her bowl and suddenly said, “Mom, I met an educated youth today.”
He Xiangyue nodded. “Your dad told me.”
Ji Baiqing said, “Can I take her some chicken to eat? You don’t know, but she’s so thin.”
He Xiangyue looked at Ji Baiqing in surprise. She knew her daughter best. She was usually very sensible and cool on the inside, despite her warm exterior. She had never been this caring, not even for her best friend, Li Wenwen.
“Ji Baiqing, were you a landlord in your past life? Your own family is barely getting by, and you want to give food to others!” she said annoyed.
