My Wife is the Vicious Supporting Character from an Era Novel - Chapter 4
Chapter 4

Perhaps Wen Miao heard her, for the grip on Ji Baiqing’s fingers loosened a little. Ji Baiqing sighed in relief, easily pulled her hand free, and scooped her up into her arms. The person in her arms was light as a feather, and Ji Baiqing carried her to the clinic without the slightest effort.
Aunt Zhang was surprised to see them again. “What’s wrong now?”
Ji Baiqing was also a little helpless. “Aunt Zhang, please take a look. She seems to have a fever.”
A temperature check confirmed it was a low-grade fever, likely from the long journey, the large temperature difference between day and night, and a chill. Aunt Zhang put her on an IV drip. Halfway through the infusion, Wen Miao woke up and saw the familiar-looking clinic. She blinked. Just as she was about to speak, her throat felt incredibly dry, and she couldn’t help but cough.
Ji Baiqing saw that she was awake and poured her a cup of warm water. “Wen Miao, you’re awake. Are you hungry?”
After drinking the water to moisten her throat, Wen Miao felt much clearer. Hearing the question, her drooping eyelashes fluttered, and she nodded.
Seeing this, Ji Baiqing smiled with her eyes, opened the buns she had brought this morning, and handed them to her. The buns were still warm, a perfect temperature to eat.
Holding the soft bun in her hand, Wen Miao couldn’t describe what she was feeling. Her emotions were a little complex.
“Thank you.” The most polite Wen Miao had ever been in her life was with Ji Baiqing, because of her unjustified favoritism and concern.
Ji Baiqing looked at her fluffy hair and couldn’t resist ruffling it, whispering, “It’s nothing. I told you, I want to be your friend. Friends should take care of each other.”
Watching her nibble on the bun, Ji Baiqing asked, “How is it? Is it good? I made it myself.” Wen Miao was a picky eater. She took a bite of each one and seemed to like the one with shepherd’s purse the most.
“I don’t like carrots.”
“Really?” Ji Baiqing was a little surprised. She unhesitatingly took the carrot bun, ate it in a few bites, and didn’t seem to mind that Wen Miao had already taken a bite.
Wen Miao stared at her blankly, a blush creeping up her face. She bit her lip, unable to speak. The food she had eaten… How could Ji Baiqing continue to eat it? But seeing that she didn’t seem to mind at all, Wen Miao could only suppress the words she wanted to say. Maybe she was overthinking it.
Wen Miao was full after eating one bun. Ji Baiqing told her to keep the rest to heat up and eat if she got hungry and then gave her some medicine. Fortunately, it was just a low fever. After the IV drip, her fever was gone, and Aunt Zhang told her to go back and rest for a day.
Knowing that Wen Miao was isolated at the educated youth point, Ji Baiqing looked at the stunning beauty and coaxed her, “How about you rest at my place? I’ll make you something good to eat to help you recover. The other educated youths at the point aren’t good people. I’m afraid they’ll bully you.”
Hearing this, Wen Miao was a little stunned.
After a while, she asked, her voice a little hoarse, “How do you know they’re not good people?”
Ji Baiqing’s voice was filled with a matter-of-fact tone. “You dislike them, so they must have done something bad.”
Wen Miao: “…What if I dislike you?”
Ji Baiqing’s eyes curved into a smile, her tranquil black eyes reflecting her image. “I’m guessing you don’t dislike me.”
Wen Miao felt a little exposed under her gaze and subconsciously looked away, her tone a little annoyed. “Who said that? I do dislike you!”
Ji Baiqing thought she was really like a cat, trying to hide her inner unease with a feigned temper. She softened her voice. “Alright, since you’re not refusing, I’ll take it as you agreeing to come home with me. You’re just going to rest for a bit. Don’t worry.”
Wen Miao was still weak. When she got out of bed, her legs were soft and she couldn’t stand steadily, so she had to bury her head in Ji Baiqing’s chest and let her carry her home. The faint, fresh scent lingered until she was finally placed on the bed.
“You rest for a bit. I’ll go get you some water.”
After Ji Baiqing left, Wen Miao looked around the room. Unlike the dilapidated educated youth point, Ji Baiqing’s home was a house with blue brick walls and tiled roof. She seemed to be very doted on at home. The bed, table, and cabinets in the room were all made of solid wood and looked new.
The temperature difference between day and night was still large in April, and the nights were cold. The quilt on the bed was thick and soft.
How could such a person inexplicably show favor to a stranger like her?
Wen Miao didn’t really believe Ji Baiqing’s explanation. Who would want to be friends with someone after only meeting them once? It wasn’t love at first sight…
Thinking of this, Wen Miao paused, and instantly remembered the new notice her grandmother had told her about before she went to the countryside: same-s3x marriage would soon be legalized.
All her questions seemed to have an answer.
Ji Baiqing had fallen in love with her at first sight?
Thinking of this, Wen Miao let out a small huff. The difference between her and Ji Baiqing was too big. There was no way they could be together. Ji Baiqing should just give up as soon as possible.
She lay on the soft bed. The package from her grandmother hadn’t arrived yet, and her quilt from last night was thin. She, with her delicate body, slept uncomfortably. After thinking about it for a while, sleepiness came over her. She couldn’t keep her heavy eyelids open and fell asleep on the unfamiliar bed.
Ji Baiqing thought that since Wen Miao was sick, she would make something light for her. Her parents had to work, so their food would be a little heavier. It would take some time to steam the preserved meat. She went back to the room to check on Wen Miao, who was sleeping with her face flushed and looked very well-behaved under the quilt. She felt a sense of satisfaction.
It was a good thing she had transmigrated, otherwise Wen Miao would have been bullied to death by the male and female protagonists.
After she finished cooking, she went to the fields and saw Lu Yan and the others carrying manure, looking disheveled, and Shen Niannian and the others pulling weeds, looking tearful and sweating profusely. She instantly felt happy.
At noon, when work was over, He Xiangyue and Ji Wei came back one after the other. Seeing the several dishes on the table, He Xiangyue was a little surprised.
“Why are there two servings of one dish?”
Ji Baiqing smiled. “Mom, didn’t you say you wanted me to bring Wen Miao back for you to see? I brought her back today. She’s in my room.”
He Xiangyue: …
Ji Baiqing didn’t see He Xiangyue’s speechless expression. After Ji Wei also came back, she drew a bucket of water, washed her hands, and went to wake Wen Miao up.
Wen Miao came out of the room and was a little embarrassed when she saw He Xiangyue and Ji Wei.
Ji Baiqing introduced them. “Wen Miao, these are my parents. Mom, Dad, this is the educated youth friend I told you about.”
“Hello, Auntie and Uncle Ji.” Wen Miao greeted them awkwardly.
Ji Wei nodded. He Xiangyue, on the other hand, was just like Ji Baiqing in that she appreciated beauty. When she saw how beautiful Wen Miao was, her eyes instantly widened, and she immediately greeted her enthusiastically. “Oh, Miaomiao, come and sit down. It’s time to eat.”
Wen Miao sat between Ji Baiqing and He Xiangyue. He Xiangyue moved the egg drop soup that Ji Baiqing had made to Wen Miao. “Baiqing said you have a fever. Hurry and drink something hot to sweat it out.”
“I know it’s not easy for you to come all the way to our village. Educated Youth Wen, if you ever need anything, just come to my Baiqing. Don’t be shy at all!”
He Xiangyue was kind-hearted. When she saw that Wen Miao was a delicate and beautiful girl and that her tone was not at all arrogant, she immediately felt more fond of her.
Listening to He Xiangyue’s words, Wen Miao lowered her head, and a mist welled up in her eyes, and her nose felt a little sore. She felt a kind of care that was no different from her birth mother’s, a feeling she hadn’t had in a long time.
Just as she was feeling a little sad, Ji Baiqing suddenly picked up a piece of bamboo shoot and put it on her plate. “I just picked this yesterday. It’s very fresh. Try it.”
Wen Miao quietly sniffled and thanked her softly.
After they finished eating, Ji Wei went to wash the dishes on his own. The three women were left to chat. He Xiangyue looked at Wen Miao up and down and thought she looked more and more beautiful. She clicked her tongue and asked, “Miaomiao, how could your mom and dad bear to let a delicate girl like you go to the countryside?” He Xiangyue was very easy to get along with. She even called her by the nickname “Miaomiao,” which Ji Baiqing hadn’t even called her.
Wen Miao wasn’t as resistant to her. “My mom has passed away. My dad and stepmother found a job for my stepsister, so I had no choice but to go to the countryside since I didn’t have a job.”
After hearing this, Ji Baiqing looked at Wen Miao with sympathy and rubbed her shoulder comfortingly.
He Xiangyue was a straight shooter and immediately cursed. “That dad of yours is a piece of trash! He treats someone else’s daughter better than his own. Miaomiao, don’t worry about him anymore! Just let him die alone when he’s old.”
Wen Miao thought of Li Wenyu, and a hint of disgust flashed in her eyes. “I’m afraid that stepsister is his, too.”
Ji Baiqing looked at her thin body and secretly glanced at He Xiangyue, saying, “Wen Miao, you can treat this place as your home from now on. My parents really like you.”
He Xiangyue was stunned and echoed, “That’s right. I feel close to you just by looking at you. Miaomiao, don’t think about that dad of yours anymore. If you’re willing, you can think of me and my old man as your mom and dad.”
Wen Miao bit her lip. Seeing He Xiangyue’s sincere eyes, she couldn’t say no and just nodded. She turned her head away, a little resentful of Ji Baiqing. They weren’t even together yet, and Ji Baiqing already wanted her to treat her parents as her own.
Ji Baiqing, who was glared at by Wen Miao, rubbed her nose. Her heart felt a little tingly. She thought that Wen Miao’s look wasn’t like a glare at all. Her beautiful and alluring phoenix eyes seemed to have a hook, and even the beauty mark under her eye was particularly striking. She really wanted to pinch Wen Miao’s face. It must be very soft.
They chatted for a while longer, and Wen Miao relaxed a lot around He Xiangyue and Ji Baiqing.
They still had to go to work in the afternoon, so He Xiangyue went back to her room to take a nap.
Thinking that Wen Miao was still not feeling well, Ji Baiqing urged her to go back to bed and rest for a while. Wen Miao’s face was half-buried under the quilt. She looked at Ji Baiqing warily, afraid that she would come to bed and sleep with her.
Ji Baiqing’s heart softened at her small, cautious look. In the end, she couldn’t help but go over and pinch her cheek. It was as soft as she had imagined.
Wen Miao’s eyes widened instantly, and a blush of shame crept onto her fair skin. Her brows were furrowed, and she looked displeased. “You pinched me!”
Ji Baiqing looked innocent and gave a faint smile. “I just pinched you. It doesn’t hurt. Why are you so petty?”
“Alright, be a good girl and rest for a while. I won’t sleep with you.”
Hearing her say that, Wen Miao wasn’t completely relieved. She only let her guard down and slowly closed her eyes after Ji Baiqing left the room.
Ji Baiqing didn’t have the habit of taking a nap. After weeding her family’s vegetable patch, she went to the mountain. She saw that Wen Miao really liked bamboo shoots, so she planned to pick some more. It had been raining a lot recently, so she could also pick some black fungus.
She also felt the joy of being a cat owner for the first time. Even though the cat she just brought back wasn’t familiar with its owner and was extremely wary, she felt happy for the whole day just by seeing the cat’s attitude being a little better when she fed it.
She thought she had to take good care of Wen Miao, fatten her up a little, so she would be more comfortable to hold.
