My Wife is the Vicious Supporting Character from an Era Novel - Chapter 42.1
Chapter 42.1
◎She’s hers◎
The dream was as real as the last one. Ji Baiqing looked at her insubstantial body, her expression grim.
She hated the feeling of being out of control, and this was the second time.
She looked around and saw that she wasn’t at the youth-point residence.
For some reason, Ji Baiqing felt a lump in her throat. She frowned and looked around, her ears twitching as she heard a faint sound not far away.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she floated toward the source of the sound.
As she got closer, she heard a man’s low voice, tinged with a hint of a laugh. It was easy to tell he was in a good mood.
“Wen Miao, I’ll give you two choices.”
“Either you spend the night with me, or you spend the night alone in the cave. I can lend you the money, no matter which one you choose.”
Hearing her lover’s name, Ji Baiqing’s heart trembled. She flew to where Lu Yan was.
When she saw Wen Miao slumped on the ground in front of Lu Yan, Ji Baiqing’s eyes instantly turned red.
At this moment, Wen Miao, though pale and disheveled, was still stunningly beautiful. Her captivating, peachy eyes were cast down, looking teary, and her lips, pale as they were, made her appear even more fragile and pitiful.
If it were Ji Baiqing, she would have wanted to help Wen Miao up and bring back her original vibrant look.
But the person in front of Wen Miao now only wanted to see her fall into the mud and trample her underfoot.
“Wen Miao, think carefully. Your grandmother’s body can’t wait much longer. And… you’ll be scared in that cave.”
Lu Yan’s voice softened, laced with a hint of temptation, practically forcing her to make a choice.
Wen Miao lifted her eyes, which were devoid of any light.
Her nails dug into the dirt, almost breaking. After meeting Lu Yan’s gaze, Wen Miao finally asked:
“Will you keep your word?”
Lu Yan looked down at Wen Miao as if she were a plaything, a smirk of casual cruelty on his lips.
“Of course. The Lu family isn’t like the Wen family, who have fallen on hard times. I wouldn’t lie to you for that little bit of money.”
He bent down, lifted Wen Miao’s chin, and his thumb brushed against it, leaving a trail of an ambiguous red mark.
Seeing this, the desire in Lu Yan’s eyes deepened. He asked with a smile, “Have you made your choice?”
Bastard, bastard, bastard, bastard, bastard, bastard, bastard.
Ji Baiqing looked at Lu Yan, repeating the word over and over in her mind.
But she was in a dream now and could do nothing.
What kind of person takes advantage of someone in need?
Lu Yan was indeed no good. This part wasn’t written in the original book, probably to cover up the male lead’s flaws.
She looked at Wen Miao, and even though she knew this was a part of the original plot she was fated to endure, she couldn’t stop her heart from aching for her.
Don’t agree to him!
Ji Baiqing opened her mouth, but not a sound came out.
Instead, her eyes met Wen Miao’s, who was sitting on the ground. Staring into those starless eyes, Ji Baiqing froze for a moment.
The woman quickly looked away, her lips parting to give her answer.
“I choose… to spend the night in the cave.”
Hearing this, Ji Baiqing felt a sense of relief and a pang of worry at the same time.
A jerk like the male lead wouldn’t offer Wen Miao a good deal. He would only give her an option that would torment her.
After all, his goal was to make Wen Miao willingly spend the night with him.
Sure enough, after hearing Wen Miao’s words, Lu Yan let out a cold laugh.
“Since that’s your choice, then enjoy it.”
As soon as he finished speaking, he grabbed Wen Miao’s wrist and pulled her forward.
This place was probably on the back of the mountain. Ji Baiqing had never known there was a cave on the mountain behind the village.
Wen Miao stumbled and was dragged to the cave entrance. Lu Yan moved the stones in front, revealing a wooden door. Twisting vines hung down, covering most of the door, and the air temperature instantly dropped by a few degrees.
Lu Yan grabbed Wen Miao’s hair, making her look up at the scene inside the cave. He asked her in a harsh voice, “I’ll give you one more chance. What do you choose?”
Wen Miao swallowed the bl00d in her mouth and said woodenly, “To spend the night in the cave.”
Lu Yan’s face darkened completely. He opened the iron door, stepped on a snake trying to escape, kicked it back inside, pushed Wen Miao into the cave, and locked the door.
He sneered, “Then, Comrade Wen, enjoy yourself.”
With that, Lu Yan moved the stones back to their original position and left without looking back.
When Ji Baiqing saw what the cave was filled with, her scalp tingled, and her chest heaved.
Snakes.
The one thing Wen Miao feared most was snakes.
And this Wen Miao, who was terrified of snakes, was locked in a cave full of them.
Ji Baiqing’s heart felt like it was being repeatedly cut with a dull knife, the pain so intense it was almost numb.
Her breathing also became labored, each breath feeling like someone was choking her, the wind pouring into her throat, each gasp like a blade slicing through her.
Ji Baiqing stood still for a second, then remembered she could pass through stones and wooden doors and go into the cave to be with Wen Miao.
The cave was eerie, with only a few rays of light seeping through the cracks in the rock walls.
Ji Baiqing immediately saw Wen Miao sitting on a rock, her arms wrapped around her knees.
The cave was small, about two-thirds the size of Ji Baiqing’s room.
In this space, countless snakes were coiled everywhere—on the ground, on the rock walls, and on the ceiling. They were green, black, and striped, all hissing and flicking their tongues, their beady eyes warily watching the human with the unfamiliar scent who had intruded.
Even Ji Baiqing, who wasn’t particularly afraid of snakes, found the sight chilling, let alone Wen Miao, who was already terrified.
Seeing her trembling, Ji Baiqing wanted to hug her, to comfort her and tell her not to be afraid, that she would protect her.
But again and again, she passed right through Wen Miao’s body.
This was her dream, yet she could do nothing.
Ji Baiqing’s eyes were shadowed and she felt very defeated.
Then, a small green snake slithered up Wen Miao’s back. Feeling the cold snake on her, and its tongue flicking her neck, Wen Miao, who was already scared, couldn’t maintain her numb expression. Her eyes turned red, her eyelashes fluttered, and big tears instantly fell.
Drop after drop of tears landed on the ground. Wen Miao’s hands trembled uncontrollably, but she didn’t dare to shake off the snake behind her.
Ji Baiqing’s face completely fell. Her hand landed on the green snake. She thought it would be a futile effort, but she suddenly had the strength to grab the snake.
Her body stiffened for a moment, then she immediately twisted the snake’s head off and threw it aside.
She then sat down beside Wen Miao, watching as the woman lifted her tear-filled lashes, looking around blankly, as if she didn’t understand how the snake on her back had just disappeared.
Seeing her expression, Ji Baiqing’s heart ached. She reached out in the air and wiped away a tear for her.
She spoke, “Zhenzhen, don’t be afraid. I’ll protect you.”
Vaguely, Wen Miao felt like she heard someone calling her childhood name. The voice was very soft, very gentle…
Exactly like the voice of an old friend.
Her expression dimmed a little, and she returned to her original posture, quietly waiting in the darkness for time to pass.
Ji Baiqing stayed with her through the afternoon and evening, until the sky was dimly lit again, and the wooden door was opened, letting in the golden light of dawn.
“Wen Miao.” The man’s voice was cold.
…
“A-Qing, wake up!”
Ji Baiqing’s eyes shot open. The whites of her eyes were tinged with red, and her breathing was rapid.
Her fingertips were still trembling, and she couldn’t control them.
Wen Miao found her appearance strange. “A-Qing, what’s wrong? Did you have a nightmare again?”
Ji Baiqing’s eyes moved to Wen Miao’s face. Seeing her beautiful, rosy face, she suddenly reached out and pulled her into her arms. Her breathing was fast, and her heart beat so hard it felt like it would leap out of her chest.
“Wen Miao.” As if to prove the person in front of her was real, she called out softly, not daring to raise her voice, as light as a cloud. The hand that should have been on her back hovered in the air, afraid of startling the phantom in front of her.
Wen Miao was a little confused. She had never seen her look so anxious before. Her heart softened, and she nestled against Ji Baiqing’s body.
Her warmth was transmitted to Ji Baiqing’s body, and Ji Baiqing finally felt a sense of reality.
It was just a dream. The person in front of her was real.
But the dream was too real, and Ji Baiqing didn’t know why she would have a dream about the original plot.
She wanted to escape, because in the dream she was too useless, she couldn’t do anything and could only let Wen Miao suffer in front of her.
“Wen Miao.” Her voice was full of heartache and a hint of a wronged whine as she called her lover’s name.
“I’m here,” the woman answered softly. Her other hand was on the young woman’s head, and her temperature was normal.
“I had a nightmare,” Ji Baiqing explained her abnormality to her.
She gave a light laugh, “It was too scary. I need a hug from my wife.”
Seeing the vulnerability in her, Wen Miao didn’t struggle. She obediently snuggled in Ji Baiqing’s arms until He Xiangyue came to knock on the door and call them for breakfast before she let go.
After breakfast, Wen Miao asked, “Are we still going to town today?”
She was worried that Ji Baiqing wasn’t feeling well.
Ji Baiqing nodded, her eyes falling on the youth-point residence, carrying a hint of coldness.
“I’ll go do some work before we leave.”
Lu Yan never expected that he would be ambushed, have a sack thrown over him, and be beaten up just for going to pee in an empty field.
The blows were brutal, and the force felt a little familiar. Lu Yan was beaten black and blue, his hands and feet tied up.
By the time he figured out who the culprit was, the person was long gone.
Lu Yan spat out a mouthful of bl00d and gritted his teeth.
“Ji Baiqing, I won’t let you get away with this!”
As soon as he said this, an old woman leading her little grandson happened to walk by. Seeing his pants half-down, she instantly covered her grandson’s eyes.
“Oh my, Comrade Lu, are you a hooligan? Don’t look, grandson, you’ll go blind.”
Lu Yan then realized his pants weren’t even pulled up, and his face turned red with anger and embarrassment.
After beating him, the anger in Ji Baiqing’s heart subsided a bit, but it wasn’t enough to completely cancel out her rage.
She thought that when she had time, she would go to the back of the mountain to check out the snake den that Lu Yan had created in the original book. Then she would let Lu Yan go in and have a good taste of it himself.
Wen Miao saw that Ji Baiqing came back so quickly and tilted her head, confused. “You solved it so fast?”
Looking at her lover’s clear eyes, Ji Baiqing’s gaze softened, losing its dark intensity.
She curled her lips and squeezed Wen Miao’s cheek. “Yes, it’s solved.”
“Come on, I’ll take Zhenzhen to find treasure.”
Wen Miao smiled. “Okay.”
The two of them rode their bicycles to town. As they flew past the fields, Pan Hongxia happened to look up.
She watched their free figures, a hint of envy in her eyes, then resignedly bowed her head to continue working.
That was someone else’s life, and it had nothing to do with her.
The recycling station was located in a rather remote area. Ji Baiqing asked a few passersby and finally found the right place.
The gate of the recycling station was open, so Ji Baiqing rode her bicycle inside. After she parked, someone came out.
It was a middle-aged woman in her thirties or forties with a round face, looking very plump.
