My Wife is the Vicious Supporting Character from an Era Novel - Chapter 44.1
Chapter 44.1
Going to the Movies
After dinner, Ji Baiqing and Wen Miao left the cannery.
Remembering that they had agreed to buy a few cans to take home, they returned to the supply and marketing cooperative.
The supply and marketing cooperative had the most canned peaches and canned bayberries. After asking for Wen Miao’s opinion, Ji Baiqing took two cans of peaches.
Snacks were restocked at home from time to time. Although He Xiangyue and the others felt bad about the money, they turned a blind eye to it. As long as Ji Baiqing could earn her own money and didn’t spend it on frivolous things, it was fine.
She also bought some cupcakes and took everything to the counter to pay.
The two cans of peaches cost eighty cents. They were only palm-sized, but along with the cupcakes, it was a round number of exactly one yuan.
After giving the money and food tickets to the salesperson, Ji Baiqing took Wen Miao out of the cooperative.
It was already past two o’clock when they returned to Yunshui Village. As she rode her bicycle through the village, Ji Baiqing noticed there were some strangers around and found it a bit strange. When she got back and asked, she found out that the movie projection team had come to the village today to show movies.
When Wen Miao heard they could watch a movie today, she was filled with a sudden sense of anticipation.
It wasn’t that she had never watched a movie before. She had, of course, gone to the movies in the capital city, but she had always gone alone.
This time was different. She could go with Ji Baiqing.
Perhaps this was what the book called a “date”? Thinking of this, the corners of her lips secretly curled up.
When she was in high school, she often heard boys and girls who were secretly dating arranging to go to the cinema to watch a movie, and they would also buy a soda and sunflower seeds.
At the time, she didn’t understand why they would have such shy and joyful smiles, as it was just a movie to her. But when the main characters were her and Ji Baiqing, she suddenly understood their excitement.
Ji Baiqing naturally also thought of this. She checked the food in the cupboard and saw that there was still some left.
She also looked at the oil they had left at home, and her idea of stir-frying some peanuts to take with them instantly went away.
If He Xiangyue found out that she had wasted the last bit of oil at home like that, her ears would be in for it.
Ji Baiqing went to the threshing ground to ask. The projection team said they would show the movie after work, so it wouldn’t be too late to go there and grab a spot at the last minute.
After returning home, she left one can of peaches in the cupboard for He Xiangyue and the others to eat after work. Ji Baiqing opened the other can, found a spoon, and scooped some out to feed Wen Miao.
The canned peaches were a beautiful golden yellow. When she pulled the lid open, she could smell a sweet fragrance. It was sweet with a hint of sourness, and the smell alone made her mouth water.
Wen Miao took a bite. The juice burst in her mouth. It was sweet, the fruit was delicate and refreshing, and it had a cooling effect. The heat instantly dissipated.
Ji Baiqing watched her eyes slightly close, like a cat, and asked with a smile, “Is it good? What does it taste like?”
Wen Miao nodded. She had just swallowed and was about to answer, “Sweet…”
Before she could finish, Ji Baiqing put her hand on her back. With a clink, the spoon fell into the can, and Ji Baiqing held her lips, unapologetically starting to plunder. She took over her mouth, and the sweet saliva was swallowed as their lips and teeth intertwined.
After tasting the sweetness, the storm-like kiss suddenly softened, filled with gentle lingering and affection. Wen Miao slowly opened her eyes and saw Ji Baiqing’s lowered eyelashes trembling.
It seemed that Ji Baiqing felt her gaze and looked up. Their eyes met.
One pair was a deep, inky black, and the other was as clear as glass.
Neither of them blinked. Ji Baiqing let go of Wen Miao, and after licking the saliva from her lips, she kissed the corner of Wen Miao’s eye.
“It’s sweet.”
Her voice was a little hoarse, but the end of her words was filled with joy.
Ji Baiqing didn’t have much of an advantage in the overly intense kiss. Just like Wen Miao, who was bullied by her until her cheeks were flushed, her eyes were filled with a seductive glow, and they were teary.
But Ji Baiqing wasn’t in much better shape. The person who usually looked so aloof had crimson lips, and her face, which had turned a little paler, was flushed. The ripples in her almond-shaped eyes were overflowing.
She didn’t know why she always liked to kiss so deeply.
Wen Miao was a little angry. Ignoring the fact that she hadn’t caught her breath yet, she put her hands on Ji Baiqing’s shoulders, stood on her tiptoes, and bit her chin. Her sharp teeth gently gnawed on a piece of her skin.
Hearing Ji Baiqing’s muffled pained grunt, Wen Miao hummed triumphantly in her heart.
It’s best if she knows it hurts!
This position was held for a few seconds before Wen Miao finally let her go.
Looking at the shallow, indented teeth marks on her chin, Wen Miao hummed a little guiltily and mumbled, “I told you it was sweet, but you still had to kiss me like that.”
She picked up the spoon and scooped up the piece of peach that had been bitten, holding it to Ji Baiqing’s lips. “Here, you eat it.”
There was so much. What was the point of taking just the taste from her mouth?
Ji Baiqing’s lips curved. Under her gaze, she ate the piece of peach.
Finally, she stuck out the tip of her tongue and licked the juice from her lips.
Wen Miao’s eyes flickered as she saw the fleeting glimpse of her tender, red tongue. Her earlobes instantly turned hot, and she lowered her head, not daring to look at her.
She couldn’t help it and licked her own lips.
It didn’t taste like anything.
Was she… was she trying to seduce her? If so, Ji Baiqing was very bad.
Looking at Wen Miao’s shy expression, Ji Baiqing’s frown, which she had due to the peaches being too sweet, instantly relaxed.
She touched the teeth marks on her chin and thought casually that she should kiss Wen Miao more often when she ate sweets from now on.
She wasn’t used to eating sweets directly, but the sweetness she tasted from Wen Miao’s mouth wasn’t at all cloying.
Wen Miao didn’t finish the remaining canned peaches. Ji Baiqing put it in the well to keep it cool so she could eat it when they came back from the movie.
Wen Miao went to sleep. Ji Baiqing leaned against the headboard and fanned herself for a while. She also felt a little sleepy. She lay down and fell asleep shortly after.
When she woke up, she and Wen Miao went to the fields to pick some water spinach. Looking at the green water spinach, Ji Baiqing suddenly wanted to eat snail noodles.
They could find snails and noodles in the countryside, as well as water spinach, wood ears, and bamboo shoots, but how would she make snail noodles? She didn’t know.
She stood there feeling melancholy for a while. When she heard Wen Miao calling her, she immediately went over.
Wen Miao had already washed the rice and was putting it in the pot to steam.
She also started cutting vegetables to prepare dinner.
Dinner was a refreshing stir-fry of water spinach and steamed eggs. It was getting dark earlier now, but it was still bright outside.
He Xiangyue told Ji Baiqing and Wen Miao not to wash the dishes. “Hurry and go grab a spot. Your dad and I will be there later. Don’t sit too far in the back!”
After being told off, Ji Baiqing and Wen Miao each grabbed two stools and walked toward the threshing ground.
When they got there, the threshing ground was already crowded with people. It was bustling with noise.
Besides the people from Yunshui Village, many people from the neighboring villages had also heard the news. Some people hadn’t even eaten dinner and rushed over excitedly.
Many people held flatbreads and sweet potatoes in their hands, chatting and laughing with each other.
Ji Baiqing pulled Wen Miao and weaved through the crowd. The weather was already hot, and with so many people, it felt like a steaming basket.
After squeezing into the middle, Ji Baiqing gave up on trying to get to the front. She found an empty space and set up four stools.
A white screen had already been set up in the front, propped up by two tree branches. The projectionist was still adjusting the projector. There was no electricity in the village, and the rumbling of the generator could still be clearly heard amidst the noise.
Ji Baiqing guessed that they probably wouldn’t be able to hear the dialogue when the movie started.
Just as she was thinking this, a picture suddenly appeared on the white screen. The crowd was silent for a moment, then erupted in even louder discussion.
Ji Baiqing and Wen Miao also found it very new. The black-and-white, blurry characters moved and talked on the screen. The plot was not as dramatic as the melodramas of later years, but it was the only entertainment they had after working for so long.
After staring at the screen for a while, Ji Baiqing suddenly caught her mother’s loud voice in the crowd.
“Baiqing, Miaomiao, where are you?!”
She stood up and raised her voice, “Mom, over here!”
She couldn’t speak normally at all; all communication relied on shouting.
Fortunately, He Xiangyue heard her and, with Ji Wei, squeezed to their side.
Each of them held a soda and some sunflower seeds, which they handed to Ji Baiqing and Wen Miao.
He Xiangyue complained, “It’s so crowded! I almost knocked over my soda!”
Ji Baiqing and Wen Miao were stunned when they saw the soda and sunflower seeds in their hands.
Ji Baiqing was the first to react. “Mom, Dad, why didn’t you buy some for yourselves?”
He Xiangyue waved her hand and sat down in a regal manner.
“Why would we buy it? Only you young girls like this stuff.”
She took out a handful of raw peanuts from her pocket. “We’ll just eat these.”
Ji Baiqing was a little helpless. She knew without guessing that they felt bad about spending the money.
She gave her own share to He Xiangyue. “Mom, you and Dad share this. You can also eat the sunflower seeds while watching the movie. Miao Miao and I will just share.”
Wen Miao also nodded obediently on the side.
He Xiangyue’s eyebrows shot up. “We don’t need it!”
Ji Baiqing pushed them over without expression. “We don’t need them either.”
Knowing that the two kids felt bad for them, He Xiangyue felt instantly warmed by the things that had cost four cents.
She took a sip of the soda in the cup. “Hiss.”
“The taste is so weird. Old Ji, you try some.”
Ji Baiqing chuckled, hearing the commotion from her mom and dad’s side.
As the projectionist made his final adjustments, the movie they were going to watch finally started.
