Oh No, My Tail Has Been Seen! - Chapter 2
Chapter 2
â—ŽShe was so nervous she couldn’t even drink her water properlyâ—Ž
The next day, Su Miao woke up early. Staying up late and waking up early couldn’t calm her down. Although she was a bit tired, a cup of Americano coffee quickly perked her up.
She didn’t need a makeup artist. She applied her own makeup, creating a natural look with subtle, clever touches. The combination of her outfit and bag stunned Chen Yin, who was there to pick her up for the interview.
“Oh my god, Su Miao, my baby. With a face like that, you’re guaranteed to ace the interview today.” Chen Yin stared intently as Su Miao walked from a distance and got into her car.
“If only she thought so too,” Su Miao thought. Unfortunately, she wasn’t chosen back then, so it’s not a sure thing now either. Everything was an unknown, and Su Miao didn’t dare to guess.
“Don’t worry,” Chen Yin said, “There are only seven new recruits this time, and not all of them will want to be Bai Jin’s artists. Besides Bai Jin, our company has many other excellent agents. Don’t worry about it.”
Su Miao nodded in response. “I know.”
Despite her words, Chen Yin noticed that Su Miao’s expression never relaxed.
Starry Entertainment was located in the busiest part of the city, which meant it was a given to get stuck in traffic during rush hour. However, Chen Yin had a lot of experience with commuting and knew there would be traffic. She had told Su Miao to leave early, and even though they had to stop and start a few times, they managed to get out of that hellish road before traffic completely froze, arriving at the company before the scheduled time.
“Okay, the rest is up to you.” Chen Yin led Su Miao directly to the reception room. As soon as she opened the door, four girls were already seated inside, all meticulously dressed, clearly also here for the interview. When they saw Su Miao, they all showed expressions of surprise.
A girl in a white dress enthusiastically patted the sofa next to her. “Come sit here.”
Seeing her so friendly, Su Miao didn’t want to refuse and went to sit in the spot she indicated.
“You’re so pretty. My name is Zhang Linyu, what’s yours?” the girl in the white dress introduced herself.
“My name is Su Miao.” Su Miao had grown up being praised, so hearing more compliments now didn’t elicit any special expression from her. The faint smile on her face hadn’t changed since she walked in.
Seeing Zhang Linyu strike up a conversation with Su Miao, the other three girls also came over to greet her, and they all started chatting.
“I was in that popular office drama, playing the female lead’s school junior,” a girl named Qi Sisi said. “My part wasn’t big, but I got to work with an experienced actor and learned a lot.”
As if a floodgate had opened, everyone became more excited and started sharing their acting experiences.
“I joined the crew of ‘Qin Xue‘ during my junior year’s summer vacation, playing Xiao Cai, the maid next to the female lead. I was lucky enough to meet the Queen of Film, An Yixin, and even talked to her. She’s really nice. She knew I was a film student and encouraged me, saying that if I persevere on this path, it will definitely pay off.” Zhang Linyu’s face was beaming with the happy smile of someone who had met their idol, and her voice became excited without her even realizing it.
The four girls’ conversation became more and more intense, and no one noticed that Su Miao hadn’t said a word. Especially after Zhang Linyu mentioned her role, Su Miao’s smile gradually faded.
She had also auditioned for that role. On the day of the audition, the director thought her acting was good enough to play the part and cast her on the spot, with other staff members present as witnesses. But for some reason, she received a call from the director late that night, who said they had found a more suitable person. When she asked why, the director hung up.
Su Miao knew that she couldn’t afford to offend the person behind the director’s sudden change of heart, so she never found out the reason. Now, hearing Zhang Linyu say she was chosen for the role, Su Miao couldn’t help but feel a pang of doubt.
There was no need to ask about the past now. She was here to compete for the opportunity to have Bai Jin as her agent.
“Su Miao, what about you?” Zhang Linyu noticed that the person next to her hadn’t spoken and addressed her directly.
“I haven’t acted yet. I didn’t get selected during the auditions.” Su Miao was telling the truth, but given her appearance, it didn’t sound very convincing.
Zhang Linyu seemed to want to ask more questions, but the reception room door opened and closed, and two boys walked in.
Su Miao silently counted the number of people. There were seven in total. Chen Yin had said there would be seven new recruits, which meant everyone wanted to be Bai Jin’s artist. It seemed that Bai Jin’s competition was as fierce in the professional world as it was in college.
After everyone had arrived, a staff member came with a sign-in sheet for them to sign. After everyone had signed, they were told that they would be interviewed one by one in the order they had signed in.
Zhang Linyu immediately looked dejected, saying she shouldn’t have been the second person to sign.
Su Miao saw that her name was fifth on the list, which was towards the back, allowing her to see how others came out of their interviews. She couldn’t deny that she was nervous; she had been since the moment she left the house. But unlike the people around her who were shaking their heads and sighing, she remained calm.
After confirming the order, Su Miao returned to her seat and took a sip of the water in front of her.
Zhang Linyu looked at Su Miao and, seeing how calm she was, couldn’t help but think how confident beautiful people were. If she had a face like that, she wouldn’t even need to be in the entertainment industry. She could become a streamer and gain countless fans.
But she didn’t see that after Su Miao finished her water, she quietly used her finger to wipe away a bead of water that had dripped onto her phone screen.
She was so nervous that she couldn’t even drink her water properly.
The first person to go in was one of the boys who had just arrived. He was in there for ten minutes and came out looking dazed, not knowing what had happened. When someone waiting asked him what was wrong, he just shook his head, grabbed his backpack from the sofa, and left the waiting room.
The staff member then called Zhang Linyu’s name. She jumped up and walked into the conference room. She was in there for only five minutes before she came out. Her expression was equally grim. No one knew what had happened inside, and since a staff member was right there, no one dared to ask her directly.
Zhang Linyu quickly packed up and left. Before she left, she quietly told Su Miao, “Good luck.” Su Miao smiled and said she would.
Everyone’s interview time was short, and it was soon Su Miao’s turn. When she heard her name, Su Miao froze for a second. She then pinched her palm to quickly compose herself. It was no big deal. Even if she couldn’t become Bai Jin’s artist, they would all be in the same company and would still have a chance to meet and get along. In short, she still had a chance.
Pushing open the frosted glass door, Su Miao saw four interviewers, but the person she remembered was not there. She had been so afraid of not knowing how to face the person she had liked for so long, but now the person she was worried about was absent.
What was going on? Had she come to the wrong place? But she quickly dismissed this concern because she recognized two of the interviewers: the famous experienced actors Lu Yuncheng and Jiang Zhi. If it weren’t for selecting new talent, why would these two esteemed veterans of the entertainment industry be here?
“Hello, sirs and ma’ams, my name is Su Miao.” Su Miao greeted the four interviewers humbly.
Lu Yuncheng followed the same procedure as before. “Don’t be nervous. We can just treat this as a casual chat.”
“Hello, Su Miao. You have excellent looks, and we were all impressed when we saw you.” Jiang Zhi looked at her old partner and complimented her without reservation. “If I had such a stunning appearance back then, I wouldn’t have always been a supporting actress.”
“Ma’am, my family has a treasured DVD of ‘The Swallows‘ that you starred in. Your portrayal of Wang Yan was so tragic and sorrowful that it still affects me to this day.” Su Miao spoke sincerely, and the scene of Wang Yan’s bittersweet love story with her beloved person from the film came to her mind. The smile on her face also faded.
Jiang Zhi just nodded at her words, her expression still inscrutable.
Lu Yuncheng looked at Su Miao with a smile. “The role of Wang Yan was a beggar in the early stages, requiring you to be ugly and self-deprecating. As actors, we must be willing to make sacrifices for a role at any time. Are you willing to do that?”
“I am willing.” This answer didn’t come from a desire to get extra points but from the bottom of her heart. Being an actress was a path she had always pursued, and Su Miao had never doubted her choice.
A younger interviewer suddenly spoke up. “Su Miao, with your looks, being an artist may not be your best option. Your appearance is outstanding. If you become an idol, I’m confident that your popularity will come much faster than if you become an actress. After you become famous, you can even take on some roles and fulfill your acting dream.”
The offer was very tempting, Su Miao thought. But she still shook her head and said, “Thank you for the kind offer, sir, but right now, I only want to be a good actress.”
Seeing her response, the interviewer didn’t press her any further.
At this moment, Lu Yuncheng said, “Since you are so determined to be an actress, let me test you. I will give you a topic, and you will perform an impromptu scene.”
“Okay, sir.”
