Oh No, My Tail Has Been Seen! - Chapter 23
Chapter 23: Meeting at the Top
Even if Su Miao were slow on the uptake, she would have noticed that Xu Sheng’s tone was off.
She had already vaguely guessed her feelings, but she couldn’t reciprocate.
In her heart, she had belonged to Bai Jin for a very, very long time, and there was no room for anyone else after that.
If one day she were to completely give up on Bai Jin because she couldn’t catch up, that would be a long, long time from now.
At least for now, she was single-mindedly pursuing her, hoping that one day, her confession to Bai Jin would be successful, and they would naturally be together.
As for Xu Sheng, she didn’t know how to comfort her.
After all, they were both a little similar in their unrequited feelings.
Xu Sheng didn’t stay down for long and quickly regained her composure. When she looked at Su Miao again, her eyes had returned to their usual state. “Wait for me for a moment.”
With that, she stood up and walked out of the living room.
After watching her leave, Su Miao casually hugged a cushion on the side and suddenly thought back to her first year of high school.
She was the officially recognized campus belle, and photos of her during military training had already been posted on the school’s website. Even before she officially started school, she was already very well-known.
Because of this, from the day she officially set foot on campus, she started receiving love letters.
Some even stopped her during P.E. class and confessed to her in front of other students.
At first, she politely refused, but as the number of times increased, some people even confessed more than once.
Gradually, she developed an avoidant attitude toward others’ advances.
A simple “no” and then she would turn and leave.
By now, she handled confessions in college the same way. The more she refused, the fewer people came looking for trouble, and eventually, no one came to confess anymore.
Now, facing Xu Sheng’s emotions, Su Miao didn’t know how to handle it.
If she simply ignored her, would she lose this good friend?
Su Miao was indecisive.
What would Bai Jin do?
Suddenly, she remembered her own confession.
Bai Jin hadn’t responded to her face, because she hadn’t given her a chance to refuse. She had just shoved the love letter into her hand and turned to leave.
Thinking of this, the corners of her mouth turned up, not with joy, but with a bit of self-mockery.
She must have been rejected, otherwise how could she have found out the next day that Bai Jin was going to study abroad?
From then on, she never saw Bai Jin on campus again.
When they met again later, Bai Jin’s eyes didn’t look like she was seeing someone she knew.
She was just a new actress Bai Jin wanted to train; everything was strictly business.
Thinking this, it made her sad.
But it was a good thing that after they parted ways, they could meet again in the vast sea of people.
“What are you spacing out about?” Xu Sheng held a cup of milk and handed it directly to Su Miao. “It’s too boring to drink alone. Come have a drink with me.”
Su Miao naturally understood that “drink” meant substituting milk for alcohol, so she happily took it.
“Okay.” She held her cup up to Xu Sheng, gesturing for a toast. “I hope we have a bright future, an endless stream of roles, a ton of endorsements, and that we meet at the top.”
“I’ll take your word for it.” Xu Sheng clinked her beer bottle against the cup, then tilted her head back and downed the beer in one go.
Seeing her being so polite, Su Miao followed suit and drank the warm milk.
After downing the whole bottle of beer, aside from the smell of alcohol on her, her face wasn’t red, and she looked as if she hadn’t had a single drink.
“Alright, it’s getting late. You should go back and rest,” Xu Sheng originally wanted to stay a while longer, but seeing that it was already half past twelve, she couldn’t force Su Miao to stay up with her, even if she wasn’t tired.
So she quickly ended their late-night chat.
She was leaving here tomorrow.
The project her manager had lined up was starting filming tomorrow, so she had no choice but to end the recording early.
It was a shame she had to leave two days ahead of schedule.
“Oh, right, this is for you.” Xu Sheng pulled a small sachet charm out of her pocket, took Su Miao’s hand, and placed the sachet in her palm.
“Huh?” Su Miao looked at the delicate and small object in her hand, which looked very much like a prop from an ancient costume drama.
It had a light, pleasant woody scent.
“I got this at a temple a while ago. They say it brings good luck and safety. I’m giving it to you now, and I hope your life will get better and better.”
As soon as she heard this, Su Miao wanted to give the sachet back to her, but Xu Sheng’s face suddenly turned serious and she shook her head.
This was the first time Su Miao had seen such a serious expression on her face, and her movements stopped unconsciously.
“But I don’t have anything to give you in return.” She hadn’t brought any jewelry out at night, and even if she had, she couldn’t just take it off and give it to her.
After all, Xu Sheng’s gift was from the heart.
“How about I give you something tomorrow?” Su Miao’s mind raced, trying to figure out what would be a good return gift.
Xu Sheng shook her head in refusal again and smiled. “I’m not giving you a gift for a return gift. I just wanted to give it to you, it’s that simple. You don’t need to feel so pressured. I actually got two, and I have another one in my room.”
Su Miao nodded blankly after hearing this. She just wanted to give it to her—it was no different from when she had shoved a love letter into Bai Jin’s hand and left.
It was no wonder she and Xu Sheng had become good friends; in a way, they were very similar.
“Okay, it’s late. Go back and rest early,” Xu Sheng said, carefully studying Su Miao’s face. “You’re starting to get dark circles under your eyes.”
“Huh?” She usually stayed up late, so why was it so bad today?
Su Miao raised her phone to check with the front camera, but Xu Sheng’s hand pushed it down a second later.
“You’re afraid I’m lying to you?” Xu Sheng stood up and threw the empty bottle she had just finished into the trash can. “I’ve had enough to drink, and I’m a little tired, too. Let’s go back together.”
Su Miao obediently nodded, still holding the cup of finished milk, planning to take it back to her room to wash.
The two of them walked down the hallway. The moon was beautiful tonight, and the stars were bright.
Xu Sheng slightly turned her head, looked at her, and then looked at the sky, trying to remember this moment.
Her door was closer than Su Miao’s, and they reached it quickly.
“See you later, senior.” Xu Sheng’s face started to turn red, as if the alcohol was starting to kick in.
Was she saying goodbye so formally? Shouldn’t she just say goodnight?
Although Su Miao was confused, she followed suit. “Xu Sheng, see you later.”
Xu Sheng smiled and waved at her, then opened her door, went inside, and closed it.
Su Miao quietly continued walking back to her room.
The first thing she did was wash the cup. She hadn’t noticed before, but now she saw that this cup wasn’t one of the dining utensils provided by the show.
The mug’s design was a simple drawing of a mermaid reaching out to a comatose prince. The drawing style was very cute.
So it wasn’t just the sachet; this cup was also a gift from her.
Su Miao lowered her eyes. She started to dread how she would face her tomorrow, how she would bring up the cup.
After thinking for a while, she decided.
Maybe she should make something with her hands to give her in return.
She definitely had to mention the cup tomorrow and say thank you in person.
After thinking about all this, Su Miao yawned. She was indeed tired. After washing up, she lay back down on her bed.
Before she fell asleep, she was still thinking about how she would express her thanks tomorrow.
The next morning, she picked up her phone to tell Xu Sheng that she would make breakfast today, but she saw three messages from Xu Sheng from two a.m. the previous night.
She usually didn’t have her phone on silent, but she must have been too tired last night and slept too soundly to hear the notifications.
Xu Sheng: I forgot to mention earlier, but I’m leaving the show tomorrow. I’ve already said my goodbyes. Tomorrow—no, actually today—I’ll be joining the crew.
Xu Sheng: The cup you took is also a gift for you. Since you took it back on your own, I didn’t want to bring it up. I hope you’ll find out before you see this message.
Xu Sheng: Let’s both work hard and meet at the top.
Liar.
Su Miao pouted. She clearly said “see you later” last night, not “goodnight.”
She must have remembered; she just didn’t want to bring it up in that situation last night.
No wonder she wanted to drink with her. No wonder she said those strange things.
Su Miao’s eyes were a little misty. She was always quick to tear up, especially during goodbyes.
If it had been last night, she would have probably gotten teary-eyed right in front of her. She must have considered this, which is why she didn’t mention leaving.
Now, she could get teary-eyed behind a screen, and Xu Sheng would never know.
Su Miao pursed her lips, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath, trying to hold back her tears.
This was no big deal. They were both actresses, and they would definitely have a chance to meet again on a film set in the future.
There was no need to be so sad.
Su Miao: Mm, we’ll meet at the top.
Bai Jin came very early to go over the schedule. “The main thing today is the interview. Everyone will share their feelings about living together for the past few days, and then we’ll go camping and release sky lanterns at night.”
Su Miao nodded. She could tell from the schedule that their life together was coming to an end.
“The time to gather hasn’t been set yet, but it’ll probably be early. Once you’re ready, we’ll go get breakfast.” After Bai Jin finished speaking, she turned to leave, but her peripheral vision caught sight of a cup on the desk she had never seen before.
When she saw the design on it, she frowned slightly.
But a few seconds later, she walked straight out of Su Miao’s room and closed the door behind her.
Su Miao was completely unaware of Bai Jin’s change in mood. She quickly put on a “no-makeup” makeup look and left the room.
She thought Bai Jin would be waiting for her at the door, but when she opened the door, she didn’t see anyone. She checked the note Bai Jin had left and saw that she had gone to the restaurant first.
So she also quickly made her way over.
When she arrived at the restaurant, Su Miao saw Bai Jin, wearing an apron, busy in the kitchen.
