Oh No, My Tail Has Been Seen! - Chapter 44
Chapter 44
â—ŽGoing to Hit the Wall Soon.â—Ž
“Bai Jin, I…” Su Miao didn’t know how to explain. Was it a hug between friends, or comfort for a rejected suitor?
While she was still hesitating, Xu Sheng stepped in front of Su Miao, blocking Bai Jin’s view.
Facing Bai Jin head-on, Xu Sheng could feel the pressure from her. The sadness in her eyes from earlier disappeared. From Su Miao’s reaction, she could sense that something was off. As someone who liked Su Miao, she felt she should do something for her.
“There’s nothing going on between us. Please don’t misunderstand. I was the one who initiated it,” Xu Sheng said. She had her back to Su Miao, so Su Miao couldn’t see the challenging look in her eyes.
Upon hearing this, Bai Jin’s eyes grew even sharper, and her tone became ice cold. “Misunderstanding? Don’t worry, I won’t misunderstand. I never stop my artists from dating, as long as they don’t go too far. Like now, the crew is waiting, and you two are here…”
Before she could finish, Su Miao’s heart went completely cold.
Didn’t Bai Jin believe her?
“Bai Jin, we didn’t do anything,” Su Miao finally couldn’t hold back and stepped forward. “I wanted to talk to Xu Sheng, and we talked about something sad. I hugged her to comfort her. There’s nothing going on between us.”
Su Miao could only choose some more tactful words to explain to Bai Jin. She didn’t want to embarrass Xu Sheng but also didn’t want to lie to Bai Jin.
After hearing Su Miao’s words, Bai Jin’s expression gradually returned to normal, and her voice became much softer. “Come here.”
Hearing Bai Jin, Su Miao quickly walked over to her side. She still didn’t dare to look Bai Jin in the eye. The atmosphere had been too terrifying, and it had scared her.
“Let’s go back to the set and continue filming. I have something to tell you after we finish,” Bai Jin said as she walked back with Su Miao.
Su Miao took a step and then turned back to look at Xu Sheng, giving her a reassuring smile.
Although she didn’t know why Bai Jin had been so scary just now, it seemed like everything was okay for the moment.
Bai Jin hadn’t told her she was coming back today, so she was probably here for something urgent.
However, Bai Jin had only said half of what she had to say, leaving the rest for after work. Su Miao’s heart remained in suspense.
She kept guessing what Bai Jin wanted to tell her.
“You’re about to run into the wall,” Bai Jin said, suddenly grabbing her wrist and pulling her close.
Su Miao lost her footing and stumbled into Bai Jin’s body.
She once again smelled Bai Jin’s unique perfume, which was fragrant but not overpowering, and had a light, elegant scent.
“I was distracted,” Su Miao quickly took two steps back and regained her footing. She looked down and saw that Bai Jin’s hand was still holding her wrist.
Bai Jin’s palm was warm, and the heat was transferring to her.
After seeing she was stable, Bai Jin let go of her hand. “What were you thinking about?”
Huh?
Su Miao looked at her, confused. Was Bai Jin going to tell her what she wanted to talk about tonight?
“I was wondering what you wanted to talk about,” Su Miao said, voicing what was on her mind. “If it wasn’t urgent, you wouldn’t have come without telling me. To be honest, I’m a little worried that I’ve done something wrong.”
Bai Jin could hear the sincerity in her words, which was the most valuable thing in the entertainment industry. Thinking that she might have scared her just now, her tone softened even more. “It’s nothing serious. I just wanted to tell you that I’ve gotten you the day after tomorrow off to film the press conference for the variety show.”
So that was it. It seemed she had overthought things.
Su Miao secretly breathed a sigh of relief. It was good that Bai Jin wasn’t mad at her because of what happened earlier.
“Okay, I understand,” Su Miao said, obediently nodding. Seeing Bai Jin’s attitude soften, she grew a little bolder and asked tentatively, “Then why were you so angry just now?”
“I don’t believe what she said,” Bai Jin’s dark eyes looked at her intently. “I only believe what you say.”
Huh?
Su Miao’s heart suddenly trembled.
No wonder Bai Jin was still so angry when Xu Sheng spoke for her. She had been waiting for Su Miao to speak. That was why after Su Miao explained, Bai Jin’s mood changed so quickly, and her anger disappeared.
“Bai Jin, I will never lie to you.”
Su Miao looked back at her, her expression extremely complex.
Mermaids couldn’t lie to the people they loved. If they did, they would immediately reveal their true form, and their tails would be exposed.
Bai Jin gave a deep hum in response.
Su Miao was completely relieved.
“Su Miao, there you are. Get back to filming. Everyone’s waiting for you,” a crew member shouted from a distance.
“Coming,” Su Miao waved in reply and hurried back to the set.
She continued the scene from before.
Facing Xu Sheng again, Su Miao no longer felt any pressure, and neither did Xu Sheng.
They had both exchanged the most honest words in their hearts. Since they couldn’t be lovers, they would be good friends.
“Xu Sheng, how’s your rest? Are you ready?” Director Xu said. “You and I are family. I have high hopes for you here, so don’t make me redo it again. If you do, you’ll be getting some ‘family punishment’.”
The director’s playful words made everyone around them laugh, and the atmosphere immediately lightened.
“I’ll do my best, Director Xu,” Xu Sheng said, emphasizing the word “do.” There was another round of laughter.
Director Xu saw that everyone’s spirits had been lifted, so he had the actors get in position to start filming.
“Alright, get ready, and action!” The clapperboard snapped, and the scene began again.
“Sister, who did you bring home? Hmm? Why does she smell so much of alcohol?” Xia Anlin frowned slightly, her expression showing some disdain. But seeing her sister’s hand around Qi Zheng’s waist, her jealousy grew. She stepped forward, took Qi Zheng from her sister, and dropped her onto the sofa.
“This is my colleague. She called me when she was drunk outside. I don’t know her address, so I could only bring her home.”
Xia Wan went to pour a glass of water to give to Qi Zheng, but Xia Anlin immediately snatched the cup.
“I’ll feed her.”
With that, Xia Anlin, who had never known how to take care of someone, grabbed Qi Zheng’s clothes and made her sit up. She then began to feed her water. Her movements were not gentle, so some water spilled on both their shirts, dampening the fabric on their chests.
“Cough, cough,” Qi Zheng choked on a few sips of water, and her eyes slowly opened.
Xia Anlin backed away a little, afraid of getting her clothes dirty.
“You’re awake?” Xia Wan went to sit beside her and gently patted her back. “It’s okay. You’re safe now.”
Qi Zheng looked at Xia Wan in a daze, then turned to look at Xia Anlin, before closing her eyes and falling into a deep sleep.
“Cut!”
The director called for a stop. The scene was over. He walked straight up to Su Miao. “Your handling of the details was excellent. You even paid attention to the emotions that weren’t hinted at in the lines.”
“Thank you, Director,” Su Miao said, discreetly glancing at Bai Jin. She had been praised, so Bai Jin should be happy, right?
But Bai Jin’s expression remained calm, and Su Miao couldn’t tell what she was thinking, so she gave up.
“Your performance was very good this time. Your eyes were spot-on,” the director said, praising Xu Sheng next.
Xu Sheng also nodded. “Thank you, Director.”
Then she walked over to Su Miao’s side and said, “Thank you.”
Su Miao shook her head, indicating that she hadn’t done anything. She knew this was Xu Sheng’s usual skill.
Finally, Director Xu praised An Yutong. “Your performance was very complete. Keep up the good work.”
Su Miao was a little stunned by the comment. What did “very complete” mean? Did it just mean she didn’t forget her lines in this scene?
An Yutong’s expression remained grim despite the praise. She simply walked away to rest.
Her assistant gave her water and fanned her.
Su Miao also returned to Bai Jin’s side. Bai Jin handed her a bottle of water.
“Thank you,” Su Miao said as she took it and began to drink.
She was truly thirsty after all that talking.
“What do you think of An Yutong’s acting?” Bai Jin asked softly.
“Not very good.” Su Miao didn’t want to say it directly. She hesitated for a moment, trying to find the right words, and then remembered what the director had said: “complete.”
“It’s not very good,” Bai Jin said. “But she comes from an excellent background. She is much closer to that goal than all of you.”
“But an actor needs acting skills,” Su Miao said.
Otherwise, why would actors who majored in acting constantly work on their skills? Was it not to make the audience feel more immersed and more empathetic?
Bai Jin smiled. “If you have a lot of influence, you don’t need acting skills.”
Su Miao was surprised by her words. Hadn’t Bai Jin taught her how to act before? Even when she was first selecting artists, she had been testing their acting skills. Why had Bai Jin changed now?
“What?”
“You’ll know in the future,” Bai Jin said, looking at her. “But my expectations of you haven’t changed. Don’t forget what’s most important as an actor, and never lose yourself.”
Su Miao didn’t understand why she was saying this to her, but she thought she could meet Bai Jin’s expectations, so she nodded seriously.
The next scene did not involve Su Miao, so she just watched from the sidelines.
She didn’t go far, just mingled with the crew members and watched them film.
As she watched their performance from an outsider’s perspective, she felt that something was wrong.
Xu Sheng was very much in character. Her flushed face, vacant eyes, and limp state showed that she was very drunk.
But An Yutong, playing the sober Xia Wan, also had vacant eyes, relying only on her body language to convey emotions.
Su Miao checked Weibo during a break and found that An Yutong was trending today, even ranking second on the hot search list.
An Yutong, daughter of the famous actor Lin Qin, stars in her first drama.
There were many photos from the set and some candid shots of her filming.
The comments were unanimously full of praise and anticipation.
Su Miao looked at the photos on her phone, then at An Yutong herself, and suddenly connected it to what Bai Jin had said about influence.
