Oh No, My Tail Has Been Seen! - Chapter 5
Chapter 5
â—ŽShe’s a mermaid, how could she smell fishy?â—Ž
Tong Yao sniffed and sniffed, trying to identify the smell on Su Miao.
Su Miao, of course, knew she had the scent of Bai Jin’s cat on her. Mermaids are most afraid of cats and are often chased by them. Tong Yao was once chased by a stray cat while playing outside, which is why she is so sensitive to cats now.
However, Bai Jin’s cat didn’t do anything to her, and on the contrary, Bai Jin had carried her all the way. Even though the cat had once scared her into fainting, Su Miao had an especially good impression of it.
“A cat just brushed against me, it’s nothing.” Su Miao let her check her body. “Okay, if anything’s wrong, I’ll go to the hospital, but right now I’m completely fine, so don’t worry.”
After confirming that she was okay, Tong Yao nodded and let Su Miao go back to her room. Worried that the others at home would also smell the cat scent on her, Su Miao decided to take a shower first.
It was always so comfortable in the water. She transformed back into her mermaid form and immersed herself in the water, letting the currents slowly wash away all the day’s fatigue. After her bath, she was full of energy again.
She wrapped herself in a towel and coiled up her long golden hair, leaving a few strands of bangs around her ears. Before she could sit down, her phone rang. She picked up her phone and saw that she had five or six missed calls from different people. One of the numbers was even Bai Jin’s.
She felt like something had happened. The phone rang a few more times. She saw it was Chen Yin’s call and immediately answered.
“Su Miao, have you lost your mind? You’re not even answering my calls.” The person’s voice was quite loud, and Su Miao couldn’t help but move her phone away from her ear. Although Chen Yin sounded reproachful, her tone was happy, which left Su Miao confused.
“What’s going on? In the time it took me to take a shower, I got five or six calls. Do you all want to hear me stream my shower?” Su Miao sat down by the bed, turned on the speakerphone, and placed the phone on the nightstand. She untied the towel from her head and slowly began to wipe her hair.
“Who cares about your shower? I called because I just got the news that Bai Jin chose you. You’re her artist now!” The news had spread through their agents’ group chat, and after half an hour, she estimated that almost no one in the industry didn’t know about it. She hadn’t expected the person at the center of it all to be so clueless.
“What?” Su Miao’s movements stopped. It was a good thing she wasn’t holding the phone, or it would have fallen again. She didn’t care about the loud voice anymore and grabbed her phone to ask again, “Are you saying Bai Jin chose me?”
“Yes, you heard me right.” Hearing her excited voice, Chen Yin bluntly confirmed what she had heard.
“Thanks for the heads-up. I have something to do, so I’m going to hang up.” Su Miao suddenly remembered Bai Jin’s calls and that she should probably call her back about it.
After hanging up, Su Miao immediately called Bai Jin back. For some reason, her hand was trembling slightly, even though it was just a normal action. Excitement and anxiety were intertwined. The phone’s rhythmic ringing was the same as before.
This wasn’t the first time she had called Bai Jin. Her memory went back to that summer in high school. She had just confessed her feelings and didn’t get a response, so she wanted to call to get an answer. But before the call could connect, she heard her deskmate mention that Senior Bai Jin was preparing to study abroad.
She never even heard a rejection, and her secret crush ended just like that.
“Hello, this is Bai Jin.” Bai Jin’s cool voice suddenly came through, and Su Miao was instantly pulled out of her memories. The stuffiness that had been bothering her was now gone, like a gentle breeze sweeping across her face.
“Hello, I’m Su Miao.” Su Miao unconsciously lowered her voice, making it as soft and clear as possible, trying her best to suppress her inner excitement. “You called me earlier.”
“Yes. I watched your interview today, and your performance among these artists was outstanding. After some consideration, I think we can try working together for a while.” She could hear the sound of papers being shuffled on Bai Jin’s end, and from time to time, there were a few meows. “The contract has been drafted. If you have time, you can come to my office to sign it.”
After listening to Bai Jin’s instructions, Su Miao finally felt a sense of closure. She was chosen by Bai Jin. From now on, they would be colleagues, the kind that could spend time together. Even though her expression was now a complete mess, she still maintained a sincere attitude. “Okay, I’ll come over to sign the contract as soon as I can tomorrow.”
“Mm.” Bai Jin was silent for a moment, then suddenly asked, “Also, I want to apologize for today’s incident. I’m sorry my cat tackled you and scared you into fainting.”
The cat incident didn’t really hurt her. The only thing she regretted was that she had fainted and couldn’t feel what it was like for Bai Jin to hold her.
“It’s nothing. I’m perfectly fine now. You don’t have to blame the cat too much. Maybe it just likes me and wanted to get close to me.” How could a cat possibly resist the temptation of a mermaid?
“It’s good that you’re okay. If you have any problems in the future, you can always find me. We’re now partners.” Bai Jin held the phone in one hand and pulled open a drawer with the other, putting the cat treat that the cat had taken out back into the drawer. She even locked the drawer in front of the cat. May stared at her and meowed a few times, not even wagging its tail.
“Okay.” Su Miao listened to her every word, afraid of missing anything.
“Then I won’t bother you anymore for now. We can discuss the details when you come to sign the contract.”
“Mm, good night then.” The words slipped out of Su Miao’s mouth, and she immediately realized it was inappropriate. To Bai Jin, they had just met today, so saying good night seemed a bit too soon. “Uh, I’m like this with my friends. I’m just used to it. Sorry.”
“It’s fine.” Bai Jin then let out a light laugh. “Good night.”
The call had long been over, but Su Miao still hadn’t snapped out of it. It felt like Bai Jin’s last tone was teasing a child. It gave her a strange feeling in her heart.
A few more messages popped up on WeChat. Su Miao opened it and saw that her dorm group chat was buzzing. Besides Chen Yin and Lin Xin, the rest were her classmates from the performance department.
Yang Yueyue: I heard Bai Jin signed you. Wah wah wah, I’m so jealous. I’m still waiting for the results from Yingcheng Entertainment. hug.jpg
Lin Xin: Among the interviewees was the top art student, Zhang Linyu. We all guessed it would be her in our company’s small group chat. I can’t believe our Miao Miao is more talented and got the offer.
Qin Ying: Miao Miao is awesome. You have to treat us, right? We have to go out for a drink tonight. Once Miao Miao becomes famous, you’ll be too busy, and we won’t have time to get together.
Xu Yuezhi: Let’s drink! Let’s drink!
…
Su Miao finished reading the chat and checked the time. Bai Jin hadn’t specified a time to sign the contract, so going out late should be fine.
Su Miao: Then tonight at 10, Occupy the Moon bar?
Yang Yueyue: Got it!
Qin Ying: Received, over and out.
Chen Yin: I’ll be late, the working class is here!
Lin Xin: Same as above.
Xu Yuezhi: I must be there!
Su Miao had planned to go to bed after her shower, but with such a huge surprise, she couldn’t fall asleep. Going out for a drink with them was a good idea. She booked a private room first and sent the name to the group chat. After drying her hair, she put on some light makeup and changed into a spaghetti strap dress suitable for a night out.
After she finished, it was almost the agreed-upon time. Su Miao went downstairs and had her driver take her to Occupy the Moon bar. It was a place they frequented in college. Because of Su Miao’s outstanding looks, the bar staff recognized her and took her directly to the private room she had booked.
Xu Yuezhi, who loved to drink, was already in the private room with several cocktails in front of her.
“Miao Miao, you’re here.” Xu Yuezhi grabbed Su Miao’s wrist and made her sit next to her. Then she took a big sniff of Su Miao’s shoulder. “Come on, let me smell your ‘star power’.”
? She was a mermaid, how could she smell fishy? Even if she did, she had clearly sprayed perfume before leaving.
Seeing Su Miao’s confused look, Xu Yuezhi realized her words might be misunderstood. “I meant ‘star’ as in a celebrity, a ‘star aura’.”
“Pfft,” Su Miao immediately understood and laughed with her. “I get it now.”
As they were talking, Xu Yuezhi took a sip of one of the cocktails in front of her. “This one is good. The fruit flavor is strong, perfect for beginners. Want to try it?”
Su Miao looked at the drinks in front of her. She never drank outside because she got drunk easily. So, every time she went out, it was for the atmosphere and the joy of hanging out with her friends.
“No, thank you.” No matter the alcohol content, she didn’t dare to drink, as she didn’t know what might happen if she got drunk.
“Then I’ll get you a non-alcoholic drink.” Xu Yuezhi didn’t force her and picked up the tablet to order a drink just for Su Miao.
“Thank you, Yuezhi, my love.” Su Miao leaned over like a delicate bird.
“You’re welcome. You’re paying for it.” While ordering a drink for Su Miao, Xu Yuezhi also ordered the favorite drinks for the other roommates who were on their way.
? Was she being so realistic?
The two chatted for a while, and the others started to arrive. Everyone came to hug Su Miao and get some “good luck.” Su Miao exclaimed that she was going to be rubbed bald.
“What do you say, dice and truth or dare?” Chen Yin rolled up the sleeve of her white shirt, ready for battle.
The table was already full of cocktails, clearly a night of drinking until they couldn’t anymore.
“This is good. Simple and easy to understand,” Lin Xin immediately agreed, saving time on thinking of other games.
“Okay.” Everyone else agreed, and the game began.
Su Miao naturally substituted alcohol with her drink. At every gathering, she was the one who ended up taking everyone home one by one.
A die has six sides. They assigned numbers based on their bed positions, and Su Miao’s number was six. When playing Ludo with Tong Yao, the number six was difficult to roll, but in a drinking game, Su Miao couldn’t escape her fate of being forced to drink.
“Truth.” After a few rounds, Su Miao felt she had drunk a little too much. Drinking too much at night would make her face puffy tomorrow, and she had a contract to sign.
“Last time I asked if you had a crush on someone, and you said yes. This time I want to ask, do we know the person you have a crush on?” Qin Ying asked with a gossipy smile.
Su Miao paused for a moment. Only Chen Yin, her friend since high school, knew about her crush on Bai Jin. The others shouldn’t know. But Bai Jin was someone no one in the entertainment industry wouldn’t know, so it was fine to narrow down the circle.
“You know them.” The last time she was asked, she felt a pang of pain from the missed opportunity, but now, with hope reignited, it didn’t feel so hard to face.
“Oh, so we all know them. Who is it from our class?” Qin Ying couldn’t help but ask more. The other roommates all had expressions of wanting to hear the gossip. They wondered who the lucky person was that a beauty like her had a crush on.
“Hold on, just one truth. Don’t think I’ll give you a buy-one-get-one-free deal.” Su Miao stopped them from guessing. Otherwise, the next day, there would be some random gossip about her.
