Oh No, My Tail Has Been Seen! - Chapter 8
Chapter 8
â—ŽI Can Understandâ—Ž
It turned out she had to wait a week, but that wasn’t too long.
Voice, stage presence, movement, and acting were all things she had been learning since choosing this major. She had always been one of the top students in her class, so she was confident she would do well in the training.
“I will do my best,” Su Miao said confidently, looking at her.
“Good.” Bai Jin gazed into her eyes and was momentarily lost, as if she was thinking of someone else through Su Miao’s gaze. But she quickly recovered, looking away and focusing on the signed contract.
“During this period, I will have you participate in a new variety show where agents bring new actors. I will send you an email with the specifics. You can read it in detail. The show will be filmed for six months, which is a relatively long period, so the returns will be delayed.”
“But we only signed a two-month contract,” Su Miao said, thinking she could use the variety show as a reason to get Bai Jin to sign a long-term contract with her.
Bai Jin saw through her little ploy. “It’s fine. Even if we don’t continue to work together after that, I will still cooperate with the interviews.”
“Okay.” It seemed she couldn’t change Bai Jin’s mind. Su Miao bit her lip and secretly made up her mind. She would follow the rules for these two months and make sure Bai Jin would sign a long-term contract with her. She had always been a good student in the eyes of her teachers and could also be a well-behaved artist for Bai Jin.
When their conversation ended, Su Miao walked towards the elevator.
“Oh, take the elevator card with you,” Bai Jin reminded her. “The regular elevator card can’t go to the sixteenth floor.”
Su Miao tightened her grip on the card. Did this mean that there were only a few people who could visit Bai Jin, and she was one of them? A little thrilled, her steps became much lighter as she walked.
When she got to the ground floor, she ran into Zhang Linyu just as she was leaving. Zhang Linyu was holding a document and waiting for the elevator. She looked up and saw Su Miao, and a second later, a bright smile appeared on her face.
“Su Miao, long time no see.”
The people who were waiting for the elevator with Zhang Linyu all went in, but she was the only one who stayed behind to wait for Su Miao to come out.
“Long time no see.” Seeing that Zhang Linyu wasn’t leaving, and since they were now in the same company, Su Miao stopped and stood with her.
“I heard Bai Jin chose you. Congratulations! I said that day, with a face as pretty as yours, who else would she choose?” Zhang Linyu kept looking at Su Miao’s face, and her smile grew brighter. “I wish I had a face this pretty.”
She was also a beautiful girl, but compared to Su Miao’s bright and elegant looks, she was more like a fresh and cute girl next door.
“Are we just giving each other compliments now? We’re in the same company now and will probably see each other often. Please take care of me,” Su Miao said, becoming more guarded. She had found her friendly and cute when they first met, but now that she knew Zhang Linyu had taken her role, she had to be a little wary. Among all the people at the audition, Zhang Linyu was especially friendly towards her.
Listening to Su Miao’s words, Zhang Linyu laughed. “This is just a business exchange of compliments. We’re in the same company, so we’ll probably see each other often. Please take care of me.”
Su Miao replied politely, “Same to you.”
Zhang Linyu wanted to talk more, but she looked at the time on her phone, frowned slightly, and then quickly relaxed. “I’m going to sign with my agent now, so I’ll get going. See you next time.”
“Okay, see you.” Su Miao watched her enter the elevator before turning to leave.
After returning home, Su Miao transformed into her mermaid form and lay in the pool. This was how she relaxed. Although it wasn’t as free as being in the sea, the spacious pool could give her a moment of peace.
“I found it. Zhang Linyu’s agent is Ye Qian. She’s very accomplished. In Starry Entertainment, besides Bai Jin, she’s the next most successful agent,” Chen Yin said on the other end of the phone, typing on her keyboard. “But why are you asking?”
“No reason. I just met her on my way out after signing with Bai Jin today and we talked for a bit.” Su Miao felt that this person was very cunning and wanted to learn more about her.
Chen Yin analyzed the situation for Su Miao based on her past experience. “Among this batch of new recruits, she has the best resume. She might share some resources with you in the beginning, but with Bai Jin, there shouldn’t be any problems.”
“Mm.” That was true. Her agent was Bai Jin now, a person she could trust completely. After hanging up the phone, Su Miao submerged her entire body in the water, closed her eyes, and rested.
The basic acting classes were things she had taken countless times in college. When she arrived at the class location, Su Miao was surprised to find that her teachers were the four interviewers who had interviewed her.
Jiang Zhi and Lu Yuncheng had a very deep impression of Su Miao. The most prominent example was that they would always pick her to come up and demonstrate during class. In contrast, the teacher who had wanted her to be an idol, the vocal coach, would deliberately skip over Su Miao when he called on students to show off their singing skills.
There were ten new artists in the class, split into two groups. Surprisingly, Su Miao didn’t see Zhang Linyu. She secretly breathed a sigh of relief. Even if she was wrong and the other person was simply being friendly, too much enthusiasm could be a burden.
The seven-day training ended quickly. Su Miao successfully passed the assessments, receiving excellent marks in every class except for vocal training.
The vocal coach looked at Su Miao’s delicate face, which had an innocent expression, and ultimately chose to abstain from giving her a grade. He just gave up on grading her. His exact words were that Bai Jin would know how good her singing and pitch were just by listening to her.
Su Miao handed her report card to Bai Jin. Bai Jin looked at the grades, nodded, and put it aside.
“Teacher Lu and Teacher Jiang have high praise for you. You have a lot of talent in acting,” Bai Jin said, not hiding her praise for Su Miao.
“I won’t let these two teachers down,” Su Miao said, looking at Bai Jin with confidence.
Bai Jin smiled. “Good.”
“I’ve also accepted a role in a modern office drama for you. You’ll play the female lead’s colleague. The part isn’t big, but it will give you some screen time. The female lead is Zhang Bingyue, who has a lot of buzz and popularity right now, so the show should have no problem with ratings when it airs.” She placed the script in Su Miao’s hands. “You’ll be joining the crew next week, so you can take some time to prepare. What’s more important now is for you to go home and pack your luggage. We’re leaving for the variety show tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow?” So soon? Su Miao’s eyes widened, waiting for her to continue.
“Yes. I’ve sent you the show’s itinerary in an email. It’s about gathering new artists from different entertainment companies to live together and let the audience watch you all grow. It will help you build your fan base early on,” Bai Jin said, weighing the pros and cons for her. “Collective living might not be so peaceful, but it’s only for seven days. After that, you can leave for the crew.”
“I can understand.” Su Miao never doubted Bai Jin’s decisions for her. The reason she had such a strong reaction was that she had been thinking of just being with Bai Jin on the set after signing the contract, completely forgetting about the variety show.
“Good. Then I’ll see you at the company at 8 AM tomorrow morning.”
The next morning, Su Miao arrived at the company early. She was surprised that Bai Jin was even earlier than her, having arrived an hour earlier. When she got to the company, Bai Jin was in the lounge, drinking coffee, with two large suitcases next to her.
“Bai Jin, I’m here.” Su Miao’s luggage was light, just one suitcase and a backpack. “I came an hour early in case of traffic. Why are you here so early?”
Bai Jin recalled where Su Miao lived, a detached villa far from the city center. She must have left an hour early, probably around 6 AM.
“I’m only a little earlier than you. I live near the company, so it’s more convenient for me.” Bai Jin saw her reaching for a coffee and quickly stood up, raising her hand to block her from taking the coffee cup.
Her fingertips gently poked Bai Jin’s palm. Bai Jin felt a little tickle and quickly pulled her hand back. Su Miao didn’t understand why she did that but obediently didn’t take the coffee cup.
“You don’t need coffee to wake up. You can rest for a long time on the way.”
After hearing Bai Jin’s explanation, Su Miao smiled and nodded. Was she caring about her?
When the driver arrived, Bai Jin led her to the car. A girl with a ponytail and black-rimmed glasses was sitting in the back of the minivan. She greeted Su Miao warmly when she saw her.
“Hello, Sister Su Miao. My name is Xu Qingqing, and I’m your assistant.” After introducing herself to Su Miao, she looked at Bai Jin. “Hello, Sister Bai.”
“Hello,” Su Miao said, a little surprised, but she instinctively reached out to shake her hand. After the handshake, she looked at Bai Jin with a question in her eyes. A newbie like her gets an assistant?
Bai Jin confirmed, “This is standard for you. Qingqing has been an artist assistant for two years. You can leave all the logistics to her.”
“Okay.” Since it was Bai Jin’s arrangement, Su Miao agreed.
“Alright, you woke up too early this morning. Get some rest now. I’ll wake you up when we arrive,” Bai Jin said, looking at the time. “You have four hours to rest.”
Hearing “four hours,” Su Miao adjusted her posture, found a comfortable position, and closed her eyes to rest. Seeing how obedient she was, Bai Jin didn’t say anything else, and the car became quiet.
She flipped through her tablet, looking at the entertainment news.
Director Lu’s Chosen One: An Yixin to star as the female lead in ‘Under the Moonlight‘, with the powerful actor Lu Jia as the male lead. Can the combination of the Film Queen and Film King break box office records?
Bai Jin looked on without a change in her expression and continued to scroll. After reading all the recent entertainment news, she put down her tablet and looked at the person next to her. Su Miao was sleeping soundly, seemingly immersed in a sweet dream, with a slight smile on her lips.
