- Chapter 48 - 48% Confession - I've been honest, please forgive me!
Lu Jinxi pursed her lips, unsure how to answer. After all, if Ming Xiaoyue insisted on tracing the truth, it would inevitably lead back to their past life.
“Hmm?” Ming Xiaoyue leaned closer, pressing for an answer.
“Well… she’s always been so kind to you, and you’re the same. When you heard she fell off the stage, you rushed to find her without a thought for your own safety, so…” Lu Jinxi stammered, finally voicing the words that had been weighing on her heart.
A moment of silence hung between them. Finally, Ming Xiaoyue sighed softly and spoke.
“Lu Jinxi, my feelings for her aren’t romantic. She simply helped me through a very difficult time in my life, so I could never abandon her.”
Hearing Ming Xiaoyue’s words, Lu Jinxi couldn’t help but blurt out, “What about me?”
As she spoke, Lu Jinxi’s lips trembled slightly, and her hands shook uncontrollably at her sides.
Ming Xiaoyue gazed into Lu Jinxi’s stubborn eyes, now glistening with tears, and felt a pang of heartache. She stepped forward, gently stroked Lu Jinxi’s hair, and whispered, “I was being paranoid before. Let me tell you a story. Once, there was a girl who also participated in a girl group audition…”
She worked tirelessly, pouring all her effort into debuting. Fortunately, fate smiled upon her, recognizing her dedication. During this time, she met many wonderful teammates.
One of them always stayed close, following her everywhere. Though the teammate remained silent, the girl knew she harbored feelings for her. Soon, they began encouraging each other, pushing each other to improve. Before they even debuted, they were chosen to film a duo music video.
Everyone believed their debut was guaranteed. But then, without warning, the girl’s teammate abandoned their dream, choosing to go solo and leave the country, leaving the girl alone and helpless.
In an instant, the walls crumbled around her. The girl’s chances of debuting vanished. “Lu Jinxi,” Ming Xiaoyue suddenly called out.
Lu Jinxi knew Ming Xiaoyue was referring to their past life, her heart filled with guilt.
The sudden mention of her name startled Lu Jinxi, causing her to tremble inwardly and physically.
After a long silence, Ming Xiaoyue asked, “If you were that girl, would you forgive your teammate’s betrayal?”
As Ming Xiaoyue spoke, she looked directly at Lu Jinxi, her voice growing choked with emotion.
“I…” Lu Jinxi began, her throat bitter as if she had swallowed gall. She knew all too well that her past self had inflicted indelible pain on Ming Xiaoyue.
She couldn’t bring herself to utter insincere words.
Another long silence stretched between them, Lu Jinxi averting her gaze, unable to meet Ming Xiaoyue’s eyes.
Ming Xiaoyue broke the silence with a wry smile. “It’s alright. Maybe fate just loves drama. No one stumbles in the same place twice unless they choose to. So, Lu Jinxi,” she said, suddenly taking Lu Jinxi’s hand, “this time, you’ll stay with me until the end, right?”
Drip! Ming Xiaoyue felt a cold drop on her hand. A muffled, tearful voice came from below: “Yes, I will.”
“Good. Then let’s go back. It’s getting late,” Ming Xiaoyue said, pulling Lu Jinxi around to walk back.
Lu Jinxi dutifully followed behind her.
The next day, with the performance looming, the atmosphere was particularly tense as everyone practiced every spare moment.
After Ming Xiaoyue and Lu Jinxi finished another rehearsal, Ming Xiaoyue noticed Lu Jinxi, drenched in sweat and clearly not in good condition. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?” she asked.
Lu Jinxi shook her head slightly, her lips pale. “I’m fine,” she said. “We can rehearse again in a bit.”
Seeing Lu Jinxi’s visibly haggard appearance, Ming Xiaoyue couldn’t shake her worry. She reached out and touched Lu Jinxi’s forehead—it was alarmingly hot.
Ming Xiaoyue’s brow furrowed instantly, her voice turning stern. “Lu Jinxi! Don’t you realize you have a fever?!”
“It’s nothing,” Lu Jinxi replied, her face drained of color. She was likely feverish; her thoughts seemed sluggish, and it took her a moment to form a complete sentence. “I’ll just take some medicine later.”
Ming Xiaoyue was furious, but mindful of Lu Jinxi’s illness, she suppressed her anger and growled, “Go rest now!”
“It’s fine. I can just wait until later…”
“Nonsense! Lu Jinxi! Do you only listen when I yell at you?! Put on your coat right now, and I’ll ask the crew if there’s a doctor!”
Lu Jinxi froze, stunned by the outburst, and didn’t dare argue further.
Ming Xiaoyue asked around, and the crew immediately sent staff to escort Lu Jinxi to the infirmary. But before they could touch her, Lu Jinxi flinched away, protesting, “No.”
Ming Xiaoyue’s patience was wearing thin, but likely restrained by the presence of others, she leaned close to Lu Jinxi’s ear and hissed, “Lu Jinxi! What do you want?!”
“I…” Lu Jinxi felt a pang of hurt, but sensing Ming Xiaoyue’s genuine anger, she whispered, “I don’t like being touched.”
“Sigh,” Ming Xiaoyue sighed softly. “Then I’ll take you myself.”
Lu Jinxi nodded obediently.
At the infirmary, the doctor frowned deeply after a brief examination, studying the report. Ming Xiaoyue watched anxiously from the side, her heart racing with worry.
“Doctor, how is she? Is it serious?” Ming Xiaoyue finally couldn’t contain her anxiety and asked.
“Oh, it’s hard to say. A quick check shows it’s just a common cold, but…” The doctor trailed off, hesitating.
“But what?” Ming Xiaoyue pressed, her concern for Lu Jinxi growing.
“Well, her pheromone levels are a bit… odd. As an Alpha, her Omega pheromone concentration is unusually high—over 60%. It’s probably just a machine malfunction, ha ha.” The doctor chuckled awkwardly.
Ming Xiaoyue and Lu Jinxi fell silent, both guiltily lowering their heads.
“No worries. Just have her take the medicine and observe her for a few hours. Alphas have excellent recovery abilities. If there are no complications, she should be fine,” the doctor said, turning to leave.
But Ming Xiaoyue couldn’t resist calling out, “Um, Doctor, I have a small question.”
“What is it?” the doctor asked, stopping in his tracks.
“Well, I was just wondering… if an Alpha’s body has too much Omega pheromone, what kind of effects would that have?”
As soon as Ming Xiaoyue finished speaking, the doctor’s gaze turned probing. “Hmm? Why are you asking about that?”
“Oh, just curious,” Ming Xiaoyue said, trying to brush it off. But the doctor stepped closer, lowered his head slightly, and addressed Lu Jinxi politely: “Miss Lu, would you mind if I examined your glands?”
Ming Xiaoyue suddenly tensed, her fingers gripping the blanket. Although she had been careful to use minimal force when marking Lu Jinxi yesterday, she knew the bite mark on the back of Lu Jinxi’s neck hadn’t completely faded.
Fortunately, the glands were an extremely sensitive area, and the doctor had no authority to examine them directly.
Lu Jinxi firmly refused. “I’m sorry, but that’s not convenient.”
“I understand,” the doctor replied. “Actually, it wouldn’t have too many effects. It’s similar to how an Alpha marking an Omega causes a sudden surge of Alpha pheromone in the Omega’s body.”
“Pheromones also induce Omegas to become dependent on Alphas. However, after a period of metabolism, the pheromone concentration gradually stabilizes and returns to its original level.”
After the doctor finished speaking, Ming Xiaoyue breathed a sigh of relief.
“But!” As expected, doctors often start with good news before delivering the bad. The single word “but” immediately raised Ming Xiaoyue’s anxiety again.
“Actually, a pheromone concentration exceeding 50% is already very dangerous. What I mean is, this explains why some Omegas commit suicide when their Alphas cheat or for other reasons.
It’s because the Alpha pheromones have become so dominant in their bodies that they gradually lose their sense of self. So even though you’re an Alpha, Miss Lu, I believe moderation is key. After all, too much of anything is never good.”
As the doctor spoke, his gaze remained fixed on Ming Xiaoyue.
A long silence filled the room. Suddenly, the doctor turned to Lu Jinxi and asked, “Miss Lu, were you coerced or threatened? Although the law doesn’t explicitly address Alpha assault, if you need it, I can…”
“No need,” Lu Jinxi said, glancing up with a half-raised gaze. Though still looking frail, she fixed the doctor with a surprisingly intense stare. “I did it willingly. If there’s nothing else, you can prescribe the medication yourself.”
“Very well,” the doctor replied tactfully.
Ming Xiaoyue, fidgeting with a corner of the blanket, looked utterly guilty. As soon as the doctor left, she whispered, “I’m sorry.”
“Hmm?” Lu Jinxi turned to Ming Xiaoyue. “Why are you apologizing?”
“I just… I…” Ming Xiaoyue trailed off, unsure how to continue.
Lu Jinxi cut in, “I really did it willingly. And it felt… good.” Her voice grew softer with each word.
“Okay, then let’s restrain ourselves for now. After the finals, you should get a thorough checkup.”
“Will you come with me?” Lu Jinxi suddenly changed the subject.
“Hmm? Me? I don’t have any problems, so there’s no need…” Before Lu Jinxi could finish, she suddenly gripped Ming Xiaoyue’s hand tightly. In her previous life, she had gone to great lengths to obtain Ming Xiaoyue’s death report.
Back then, the forensic pathologist had told her that even if Ming Xiaoyue hadn’t drowned, her body was already at its breaking point. The pheromone imbalance meant she was destined to die young; it was only a matter of time.
Looking at the still-youthful Ming Xiaoyue before her, Lu Jinxi felt a sharp pang in her heart. She couldn’t bear the thought of Ming Xiaoyue leaving her first again.
“Just get checked out, just in case.”
Ming Xiaoyue met Lu Jinxi’s unwavering gaze, and for a moment, the words of refusal caught in her throat. Finally, she murmured an assent. She had a feeling something was wrong with her body.
At least, the pheromone imbalance from her previous life seemed to be resurfacing. Ming Xiaoyue lowered her gaze, confronting for the first time the truth she had been trying to avoid.
The two fell into a tense silence, each harboring their own thoughts. Just then, the door suddenly swung open from the outside.
