“A Jin, are you okay?” Song Wanwen and Wen Yifan rushed over.
“It’s nothing serious. What are you two doing here instead of practicing?” Ming Xiaoyue had noticed Lu Jinxi’s voice was a bit hoarse on the way over.
She decided to play it cool, grabbing a glass of warm water from the side and handing it to Lu Jinxi while answering for her.
“We just heard some rumors and came to check.”
“It’s just a slight cold. If there’s nothing else, you should go back to practicing. Tomorrow’s the performance, after all,” Ming Xiaoyue urged, knowing every minute counted now.
“Yeah, we’ve practiced enough for today. What about you guys?” Song Wanwen sighed softly.
Ming Xiaoyue and Lu Jinxi’s popularity was so overwhelming that despite fluctuations in the rankings these past few days, they remained firmly in first place. It was hard to tell if this was good news or bad news.
Being ranked first at least proved they had a massive fan base, but the downside was the immense pressure of performing first, making mistakes all too easy.
“Don’t worry,” Ming Xiaoyue said firmly. “We’ll give it our all.”
Just then, a knock sounded at the door. The group turned to see Tang Jinshu, Xi Ruoqiong, and the others standing there.
“Huh? What are you all doing here?”
“Um, is Xiao Lu okay?” Xi Ruoqiong asked softly.
“It’s nothing serious,” Ming Xiaoyue replied, glancing at Tang Jinshu.
“Well, I just came to check in. If everything’s fine, we’ll be going now,” Tang Jinshu said, sensing the awkward atmosphere. He grabbed Wen Hongyu’s arm and began to leave.
“Mm-hmm,” Ming Xiaoyue murmured. “You guys should get back to training too.”
With Ming Xiaoyue’s words hanging in the air, the others couldn’t linger any longer.
“We’re leaving now! Take care of yourselves, you two.”
“Mm-hmm.”
The group filed out in a noisy stream. Ming Xiaoyue reached out to touch Lu Jinxi’s forehead.
“Ming Xiaoyue, are you happy now?” Lu Jinxi suddenly asked, her tone inexplicably strained.
“Huh? What do you mean?” Ming Xiaoyue replied, confused.
“Right now, with this show… are you happy?” Ever since Ming Xiaoyue’s confession yesterday, Lu Jinxi had struggled to overcome the barrier in her heart.
In their previous life, all of Ming Xiaoyue’s misfortunes seemed to stem from Lu Jinxi’s abrupt departure overseas, even though she had been forced to leave at the time.
But in this new life, Lu Jinxi knew better than anyone that it had all been her own choices. She had dealt with her manager back when resolving the hotel incident.
So why, in their previous life, had she failed to stay firmly by Ming Xiaoyue’s side, allowing such a vast chasm to form between them—a chasm so wide that Lu Jinxi feared they could never return to how things once were?
Yet Ming Xiaoyue said, “Happy? Yes, I’m very content. Lu Jinxi, I’ve been through so much. Sometimes, those distant memories feel like dreams. If they were truly dreams, I’d be grateful.”
As Ming Xiaoyue spoke, she turned to Lu Jinxi and said, “I’m just grateful it’s not too late. I was being stubborn, clinging to the past.”
“No!” Lu Jinxi insisted. More than Ming Xiaoyue denying herself, Lu Jinxi felt she was the one who should be denying herself. Even if they were to relive their lives, she wouldn’t want Ming Xiaoyue to simply gloss over the events of their previous life.
“Hmm?!” That indescribable, peculiar sensation resurfaced in Ming Xiaoyue’s heart. She looked at Lu Jinxi, feeling as if she were about to stumble upon something again—something mysterious and dangerous.
Yet, gazing at Lu Jinxi, Ming Xiaoyue couldn’t resist asking, “Lu Jinxi…”
Lu Jinxi’s thoughts snapped back to reality at the sound of her name. She belatedly realized she had almost confessed again…
A cold sweat broke out on Lu Jinxi’s back. She regretted her impulsiveness, knowing their newly reconciled relationship couldn’t withstand the shock of her revealing her rebirth.
“Mm-hmm,” Lu Jinxi replied, swallowing subtly to steady herself.
Ming Xiaoyue frowned slightly, unsure how to phrase her question. She couldn’t just blurt out, “Are you a reborn too?” That would be a dead giveaway, and she worried Lu Jinxi would look at her with suspicion.
After carefully considering her words, Ming Xiaoyue cautiously asked, “Are you hiding something from me?”
Lu Jinxi’s hand, resting on the blanket, unconsciously tightened its grip on her pants leg. Her face stiffened, and her voice carried a hint of guilt.
“How could that be?” Lu Jinxi replied, then, trying to cover her tracks, added, “What could I possibly be hiding from you?”
Perhaps sensing her own paranoia, Ming Xiaoyue suddenly felt a pang of guilt. She had been probing too much.
If Lu Jinxi were truly reborn, she would have already slipped up. Besides, Lu Jinxi was still recovering from her illness, which was partly Ming Xiaoyue’s fault…
“I’m sorry,” Ming Xiaoyue apologized, oblivious to Lu Jinxi’s strange behavior. “I can be a bit paranoid sometimes. Just forget I asked.”
“Ha ha, yeah, no problem,” Lu Jinxi stammered, her words becoming increasingly incoherent.
“Alright, you rest for a bit. I’ll go to the cafeteria and bring you some food. What do you want to eat?”
“Anything is fine,” Lu Jinxi replied, watching Ming Xiaoyue’s retreating figure. Her expression gradually darkened as she realized a fundamental truth: the beginning of a lie requires countless more to maintain.
“Sigh,” Lu Jinxi sighed, looking up at the ceiling. She knew she couldn’t hide the truth about her rebirth from Ming Xiaoyue forever.
But the moment she imagined confessing, her heart instinctively recoiled. She also knew that the sooner she confessed, the less it would hurt Ming Xiaoyue.
But… but…
Her pupils gradually unfocused, tears welling in her eyes. She gritted her teeth and ultimately chose to evade the truth, at least for now. She didn’t want to shatter this fragile peace.
Bang! Lu Jinxi heard a noise, quickly suppressing her gloomy mood. She looked up, but it wasn’t Ming Xiaoyue—it was the doctor.
“The medicine is ready. I’ve put it on the cabinet. Take it after you eat. You might feel drowsy afterward, but that’s normal,” the doctor instructed.
Lu Jinxi suddenly spoke up, “Do you have any strong medicine? Something that can restore my physical condition immediately with just one dose?”
The doctor gave Lu Jinxi a meaningful look, but there was no surprise in her eyes. Knowing Lu Jinxi was a member of a girl group, she understood why she would ask such a question.
“Well, yes, we do have such medicine, but every medicine has its side effects. With such a potent drug, the side effects would be even more severe. Moreover, your unique physical condition… it’s hard to say what might happen.”
Before the doctor could finish, Lu Jinxi interrupted, fearing Ming Xiaoyue might return if she waited any longer.
“Then can you prescribe one dose for me?” Lu Jinxi asked directly.
“Are you sure?” The doctor wasn’t surprised by Lu Jinxi’s behavior; other members often acted similarly. She knew tomorrow was the competition, so Lu Jinxi’s eagerness for quick results wasn’t without reason.
“Yes, I’m sure. Thank you,” Lu Jinxi replied.
As if anticipating this, the doctor pulled another set of medicine from her white coat pocket and instructed, “The effects will only last twelve hours. And your condition is truly unique—the Omega pheromone levels in your body are far higher than those of an Alpha.”
“But I prescribed the Alpha dosage to ensure the medication’s effectiveness. In any case, think carefully before deciding. I know tomorrow’s competition is crucial for you, but your health is equally important. And…”
“Thank you, I’ll consider it myself,” Lu Jinxi interrupted, anxious about Ming Xiaoyue’s return. She quickly added, “Oh, if my teammates ask, could you keep this confidential?”
The doctor glanced at Lu Jinxi skeptically. She had assumed Ming Xiaoyue and Lu Jinxi were a couple, but she replied ethically, “Yes, I understand. If there’s nothing else, I’ll leave now.”
“Okay.”
Just as the doctor opened the door, she came face-to-face with Ming Xiaoyue. To be honest, Lu Jinxi’s heart skipped a beat the moment she saw Ming Xiaoyue’s face through the doorway.
A sudden wave of anxiety surged through her. She had no idea how long Ming Xiaoyue had been there or how much of her conversation with the doctor she had overheard.
Lu Jinxi’s mind raced, desperately searching for an explanation…
The doctor gave Ming Xiaoyue a polite nod, which she returned. But as they brushed past each other, Ming Xiaoyue suddenly spoke up.
Lu Jinxi’s heart leaped into her throat. She instinctively opened her mouth to say something, but only a silent gasp escaped.
“Doctor, is A-Lu alright?” Ming Xiaoyue asked.
“Yes, I’ve prescribed medication, but she needs to take it after eating. There might be some side effects, such as drowsiness, which are normal,” the doctor replied, repeating almost verbatim what she had just told Lu Jinxi.
“Thank you, Doctor. Have you eaten? I brought an extra portion,” Ming Xiaoyue said, offering the meal.
The doctor seemed slightly taken aback but accepted with a grateful, “Thank you.”
“I should be thanking you,” Ming Xiaoyue replied with a smile.
“Well, make sure you both take your medication promptly after eating. Alphas generally have excellent recovery abilities,” the doctor added, feeling particularly guilty under Ming Xiaoyue’s kindness. She glanced unconsciously at Lu Jinxi.
“We will. Thank you,” Ming Xiaoyue said sincerely.
“Mm,” the doctor replied curtly, taking the meal and leaving.
When Ming Xiaoyue turned to look at Lu Jinxi, her steps quickened. She rushed over and gently touched Lu Jinxi’s forehead, her face filled with concern. “Why are you so pale? Has it relapsed?”
Lu Jinxi’s face was completely drained of color, her lips trembling slightly. After a moment, she found her voice and said, “It’s nothing. Let’s eat first.”
Though Lu Jinxi’s attempt to change the subject was clumsy, Ming Xiaoyue didn’t suspect anything. “Okay,” she replied. “Eat your medicine and rest well afterward.”
“Mm,” Lu Jinxi murmured, her guilt palpable. She lowered her head, avoiding Ming Xiaoyue’s gaze.
“Oh, and if you’re still feeling unwell tomorrow, please tell me right away,” Ming Xiaoyue added casually, as if it were an afterthought.
Lu Jinxi, however, immediately sensed the hidden meaning in Ming Xiaoyue’s words. Her lips moved as if she wanted to say something, but no sound came out.
Each woman harbored her own secrets, so Ming Xiaoyue didn’t dare look at Lu Jinxi, failing to notice her unusual behavior.
As if determined to get an answer, Ming Xiaoyue pressed, “Mm?”
