- Chapter 3 - She Was Losing Control Because of Yan Liu
The Arena Competition did indeed include a team event, but participants typically formed teams and registered together beforehand.
It was exceedingly rare for someone like Yan Liu to still be without a team partner after taking the Talent Potion and being on the verge of entering the arena. She looked more like she was just there to make up the numbers.
Yet the girl’s gaze remained calm and composed, showing no awkwardness even when inviting the geniuses. For a moment, her courage even inspired envy.
“Wow, this Omega is so brave! What’s her name? Yan Liu? I’ll remember that name.”
“The geniuses in the western district of the arena—most people wouldn’t dare speak to them. Yan Liu actually invited someone to team up for the team event! Isn’t she afraid of being rejected?”
With so many live broadcast cameras present, nearly everyone in the Interstellar Academy was watching. In such a high-profile setting, any fame or embarrassment would spread far and wide.
Ji Yilian merely glared coldly in Yan Liu’s direction, her heart churning with a mixture of disgust and faint bewilderment.
Didn’t Yan Liu realize that by rejecting her in front of everyone, she was condemning Yan Liu to ridicule?
“You’re Yan Liu, right? Why don’t you team up with me?”
Bess, the Alpha standing beside Ji Yilian, suddenly spoke. With her auburn hair and notorious reputation as a fickle Alpha, she was a well-known figure.
As Bess approached Ji Yilian, all the Hummingbirds recorded their conversation.
The host, Ms. Qingdai,’s cheerful voice boomed through the arena once more.
“We’re now witnessing Bess, who ranked seventh in the previous Arena Competition in this region, proactively extending a team-up invitation to Yan Liu, an Omega whose Spiritual Body has just awakened and whose Spiritual Power hasn’t yet been assessed.”
Hearing her name and last year’s ranking, Bess shrugged helplessly, turned to face the audience and cameras, and shrugged again.
“Ms. Qingdai, that ranking hardly warrants such a mention.”
After finishing seventh last time, she had endured a severe scolding from her mentor. This year, she was determined to redeem herself and aim for the top three.
“Yes, the top three.”
“The team competition ranking also carries significant weight in the overall score… I can’t just team up with anyone and risk being dragged down, hindering my performance.”
Bess had already walked up to Yan Liu when she suddenly remembered this!
Ah, her brain! Seeing that adorable little rose with thorns, she completely forgot about the important stuff!
Bess turned back, momentarily regretting her impulsive decision to team up. But when her eyes met Yan Liu’s, that fleeting regret vanished into thin air.
Bess couldn’t resist the urge to whistle.
She’d bet her own eyes on it!
The Omega before her simply hadn’t fully blossomed yet!
Look at those watery eyes, their light brown irises shimmering with a captivating, hazy glow. One could only imagine the color they’d reveal in moments of passion.
Yan Liu watched Bess approach, her peripheral vision catching Ji Yilian standing motionless in the distance like an ice sculpture. A faint smile curved her lips.
“Thank you, but I already have other teammates in mind.”
She politely declined.
Bess’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Why? Are you rejecting me?”
I’m practically the dream girl of countless Omegas! she thought. How could I be so ruthlessly rejected in a place like this?
Yan Liu looked petite and delicate, standing there with no hint of intimidation. Her smile even carried a touch of sweetness.
To Bess, who was accustomed to Omegas meticulously grooming themselves to near perfection but lacking genuine vitality, Yan Liu felt as refreshing as a white cloud drifting overhead on a summer day—playful, innocent, and spirited. It was impossible to truly be angry with her.
Especially now, as Yan Liu winked at her.
“I’m so sorry, Bess. You’ll forgive me, right?”
The moment Yan Liu moved, the Original Host’s timid and shrinking demeanor vanished completely.
There are people whose inner light shines through no matter what form they inhabit. The moment they speak, their gaze meets yours, and the light from their soul spills over, compelling you to turn and look, your heart stirred.
Bess crossed her arms, a flicker of amusement in her eyes, and shook her head.
“As a proper Alpha, respect for Omegas is a fundamental principle. Of course, I’m not angry. But, Little Sweet O, you’ve rejected me. Who else are you planning to team up with?”
As she spoke, Bess swiftly scanned the faces of her recent companions in her mind.
Among geniuses, there’s often a competitive spirit. No one believes they’re inferior to others. If they happen to lose a match or two in the arena, they chalk it up to bad luck.
But there was one exception.
Ji Yilian.
Her name immediately sprang to Bess’s mind.
Upon awakening her Spiritual Body, Ji Yilian’s Spiritual Power was immediately classified as S-Rank. Moreover, as the youngest Alpha at the time, this achievement alone placed her beyond the reach of anyone else’s efforts.
It’s widely known that the earlier one awakens, the greater their future potential and accomplishments.
Ji Yilian, a genius among geniuses, was someone even Bess never considered comparing herself to.
So, Bess instinctively crossed Ji Yilian’s name off Yan Liu’s list of potential partners.
But then, a voice suddenly called out from behind her.
“Yan Liu.”
The mere mention of her name sent a jolt of energy through the crowd, compelling them to turn and see the speaker.
Bess’s hackles rose.
She hadn’t forgotten who that voice belonged to: Ji Yilian!
How did Ji Yilian get here?
Does she also want to team up with this pitiful yet prickly Little Sweet O?
Bess wasn’t the only one stunned. The other spectators watching the scene couldn’t help but tense up, curious about Ji Yilian’s purpose in approaching.
What could it be?
Yan Liu smiled at Ji Yilian, the woman who seemed to have wrestled with her conscience for ages before finally taking that decisive step toward her.
Her former childhood friend.
Yan Liu wondered how others viewed childhood friendships.
But in her heart, Ji Yilian had never deserved the Original Host’s sincere affection.
“The Arena Competition isn’t child’s play,” Yan Liu said. “I can only team up with you once to ensure you’re not expelled from the Academy. In the individual matches, no one can help you.”
Ji Yilian finally spoke, uttering a long sentence.
Her expression remained indifferent and icy, her exquisite features radiant as if she were a deity descended from the heavens, yet she seemed so aloof and distant.
For a moment, Yan Liu even wanted to ask her, “Have you always found the past ‘me,’ who poured her heart out to you, utterly ridiculous?”
But if it was so ridiculous, why had she accepted all those selfless sacrifices without complaint?
Their gazes met.
Ji Yilian’s eyes remained utterly still, those deep, phoenix-shaped eyes staring at Yan Liu as if they had never shared those years as childhood friends, as if she were looking at a complete stranger.
No one could see the tumultuous emotions raging within the S-Class Omega as she realized her body had moved on its own, striding toward Yan Liu and standing beside her.
She had lost control.
She had actually lost control because of Yan Liu.
Beneath her icy exterior, her instincts were screaming to be near Yan Liu, seizing control of her body and demanding closeness.
