- Chapter 5 - Why Do You Keep Stealing Glances at Me?
“Hey, Little Sweet O,” Bess called out, her voice ringing with confidence. “In front of the entire Interstellar Era, are you sure you’re choosing me over Ji Yilian?”
Bess straightened her chest, tossing her long, fiery red hair. Her emerald eyes sparkled as she gazed at Yan Liu.
This was far more exhilarating than winning seventh place!
The instructor should really witness this moment, to understand the sheer triumph she felt.
To be chosen by such a cute, beautiful, and unique Omega—especially after Yan Liu had rejected the renowned genius Ji Yilian—and then have her walk right over to her!
Bess felt like she’d suddenly transformed from the eternally lovelorn supporting character in an eight o’clock drama into the leading lady.
She almost wanted to whistle in celebration.
This was already the second time today that Yan Liu had stirred such elation and surprise within her.
Maintaining a respectful distance, Yan Liu stopped a few steps away from Bess and said politely, “It’s just a team competition, Bess. Please don’t let your imagination run wild.”
Yan Liu winked with her right eye as the Hummingbird flew to her, giving it a playful wink as well.
Bess froze, her face flushing crimson. She stammered, unable to form a coherent sentence.
The audience erupted in laughter at the scene.
“Hahaha! Bess finally got her comeuppance!”
Ms. Qingdai, the host, chimed in with amusement, “As expected of the player I’ve been rooting for! She’s managed to attract both top talents, who are now vying to team up with her.”
“It seems Ji Yilian is temporarily trailing by one round. Our S-class Alpha is still too green, lacking Bess’s knack for communication.”
Her tone carried a gleeful, “Don’t stop the show!” energy.
The atmosphere in the arena instantly brightened, everyone unable to suppress their smiles.
Everyone except Ji Yilian.
This Alpha prodigy, who had always been the center of attention, maintained her usual silent, serious, and composed demeanor. She slightly lifted her chin and strode back to her previous position without a word.
But with each step, she couldn’t help but wonder why.
Why?
Why did Yan Liu reject her?
Yan Liu clearly knew that Ji Yilian was stronger and more qualified to help her secure a better score in the team tournament.
If their team tournament score was high enough, even if Yan Liu’s individual tournament score fell short, she still had a chance to place and earn some academic credits.
Yet Yan Liu had rejected her.
Why?
Ji Yilian was perhaps both unfortunate and fortunate. Though an orphan, her Spiritual Body awakened before she turned fifteen, revealing her exceptional talent early and attracting external attention and support.
Even before this, her inner world had never lacked.
Perhaps she was born with a deficiency in emotional perception, unlike Yan Liu, another orphan who was overly sensitive and prone to self-doubt.
Ji Yilian never cowered; instead, she boldly and directly pursued the world’s glories and achievements within her reach.
Her humble beginnings perfectly suited her natural instincts.
It allowed her to act like a hunter, starting with the smallest prey and gradually capturing success, step by step. These victories propelled her to higher positions, bringing her into the public eye and allowing her to shine as a unique and radiant figure.
It was like a game where the tutorial village was deliberately remote, making the journey to the world’s capital the true essence of the game itself.
For Ji Yilian, this was the very meaning of the world.
Yan Liu…
The name “Yan Liu” involuntarily sprang to Ji Yilian’s mind.
She couldn’t understand why Yan Liu had acted so irrationally. Surely choosing her would have been better than choosing Bess?
Yet, proud as Ji Yilian was, even in her current turmoil, she would never reveal her true feelings to Yan Liu.
When Bess and Yan Liu went to register for the team competition, Bess couldn’t resist sneaking a question to the girl.
“Hey, why did you choose me earlier?”
“Didn’t you reject me at first, saying you had someone else you wanted to team up with?”
“Do you think I actually have more… potential and charm than Ji Yilian?”
Bess fired off three questions in quick succession.
Yan Liu simply flashed her small tiger teeth, her almond eyes curving into a smile.
“Bess, the sun is still in the sky.”
Bess: “What do you mean?”
The petite Omega spoke softly and slowly, as if complimenting her.
“It’s not dark yet. It’s not time to dream.”
Bess’s brain froze for a moment before she realized what the Little Sweet O meant!
She was telling me not to daydream! To stop comparing myself to Ji Yilian!
Damn it.
Bess sucked in a cold breath. Using her height to her advantage, she stepped closer to Yan Liu, blocking her path and looking down at the girl.
“Take another good look. Don’t you think I have more charm than Ji Yilian?”
She conceded on the potential front—being less skilled wasn’t shameful.
But when it came to charm, the number of Omegas applying to be matched with her for marriage each year was countless! Seriously, it’s no exaggeration!
Who wouldn’t want a partner who is passionate and empathetic? Ji Yilian helps so many Omegas every year; her kindness is legendary.
As for someone like Ji Yilian, how many Omegas would even dare to apply for a match with her?
Besides… Ji Yilian’s emotions are usually as flat as ice. Such a cold, unapproachable person is better suited for idol worship than for daily life as a partner.
Even though she’s breathtakingly beautiful—even Bess, an Alpha herself, had to admit, “How did such a face end up on an Alpha?”—this icy demeanor makes her unsuitable for romance, pairing, or marriage.
As Bess danced in front of Yan Liu, the latter tilted her head slightly and murmured, “Bess, Ji Yilian is prettier.”
Yan Liu was much smaller than Bess, forcing her to look up when speaking. This only made her palm-sized face appear even more adorable, her lively almond-shaped eyes sparkling with mischief as she blinked.
For a moment, Bess completely forgot what Yan Liu had said. Her mind was consumed by the thought:Â Little Sweet O is so cute! She’s looking at me with those bright, sparkling eyes!
Cupid’s Arrow must have chosen a particularly auspicious day, because Bess was struck by several arrows all at once.
Even though she knew she was on a live broadcast and needed to mind her words and actions, Bess felt dazed and disoriented. She could only stare blankly at Yan Liu, completely forgetting what she was supposed to say.
“The Individual Tournament is about to begin. All participants, please proceed to the designated area for the lottery draw,” Ms. Qingdai, the host, announced calmly.
Her tone was intriguing, less like she was announcing a high-stakes competition and more like she was inviting everyone on a leisurely outing.
Yet, in the Interstellar Era, people actually preferred Ms. Qingdai’s relaxed demeanor.
To ensure fairness and impartiality in the competition, all Individual and Team Tournaments used live lottery draws, employing the most ancient method of paper slips to prevent any possibility of manipulation.
Within the venue, everyone’s Spiritual Power was suppressed, prohibiting its use during the draw.
This prevented prodigies from exploiting their superior Spiritual Power to detect the names and numbers inside the paper slips in advance.
The lottery draw consisted of two stages. First, all participants randomly drew a number to determine their initial seed.
Then they proceeded to draw their opponents for the first round of the Individual Tournament.
Yan Liu was almost the last to collect her number.
Ji Yilian glanced at her from the corner of her eye.
When the girl pursed her lips, Ji Yilian could faintly glimpse the docile innocence of her childhood—a tiny, fledgling bird with newly sprouted feathers, unable to fly. How could she possibly compete against those hawks and falcons?
For some reason…
Ji Yilian forced herself to look away.
She imagined Yan Liu losing the match, her face crumpled in helpless, pitiful defeat.
This girl didn’t choose me as her teammate. Even if she loses now, it’s her own choice.
Yet Ji Yilian found herself reluctant to witness Yan Liu’s distress.
After drawing her number, Yan Liu slowly walked back, her shoulder brushing lightly against Ji Yilian’s as she passed.
“Yi Yi, why are you always sneaking glances at me?”
The girl’s lips curved into a radiant smile, her wide almond eyes unexpectedly radiating a hint of allure.
It was as if a vibrant rainbow had suddenly appeared on a blank sheet of paper, its colors rich and dazzling.
This was completely different from how Yan Liu had acted around Ji Yilian before.
She was unfamiliar, yet utterly captivating, almost shattering Ji Yilian’s defenses.
The latter pressed her lips together, her body tensing, a suspicious flush creeping up her pale neck.
That irresistible sweet fragrance, following the girl as she approached, burrowed relentlessly into her lungs.
How could this be happening?
What exactly had Yan Liu done to her?
Why was she suddenly so deeply affecting her emotions and reactions?
