Ning Xin’er’s hand, which was wiping the table, paused slightly.
Huo Jingtian, however, remained calm. He glanced at her casually and asked, “Does it look good?”
As he spoke, he grabbed Ning Xin’er’s hand and pressed it against his abdomen. “If you like it, you can touch it.”
Ning Xin’er instantly pulled her hand back, as if she had touched something scorching hot.
“You’re overthinking it.”
She wasn’t actually interested in Huo Jingtian’s abs—she was just surprised that he has not only six-pack abs, but eight.
The girls in her dorm, and even the whole school, had always assumed he had six-pack abs.
Now, their guesses were finally confirmed, and the false assumption was overturned.
“Then why are you blushing?”
Huo Jingtian smiled and teased her.
Ning Xin’er retorted, “It’s just a natural physiological reaction—an increased heart rate leads to a normal release of dopamine.”
Huo Jingtian ignored her explanation, leaned in slightly, and locked eyes with her. His voice was low and playful. “Xin’er, do you want to be my real girlfriend?”
Real girlfriend?
That’s right. Ning Xin’er wasn’t actually Huo Jingtian’s real girlfriend. They had a deal.
During her exchange program abroad, she had found herself alone and struggling in an unfamiliar place. Just when she was at a loss, Huo Jingtian had appeared and helped her.
In exchange, he had asked her to pretend to be his girlfriend.
His condition? She had to shield his real girlfriend from unnecessary trouble—for an entire year.
It had already been 111 days. There were still more than eight months to go.
Once the year was up, they would go their separate ways.
Being his fake girlfriend wasn’t easy. Not only did she have to endure his over-the-top public displays of affection, but she also had to deal with the girls who were infatuated with him.
After all, Huo Jingtian was the school heartthrob, constantly surrounded by admirers.
Ning Xin’er had always believed he truly loved his real girlfriend. Otherwise, why would he go so far to protect her?
But now, why was he asking this?
Could it be…?
Just then, Huo Jingtian suddenly chuckled and said lightly, “I just wanted to test my charm. I wanted to see if I could make you fall for me. Looks like you’re not impressed. Your self-control is pretty strong.”
Ning Xin’er let out a quiet sigh of relief.
For a moment, she had worried she’d been helping a scumbag.
A guy who eats from one bowl while eyeing another.
Just like him… Despicable!
She shook her head, trying to shake the thought of Huo Jinyan out of her mind.
Why was she even thinking about him?
When she looked up, she met Huo Jingtian’s amused gaze.
Pointing to a bouquet of blue roses beside him, he said with a smile, “Take these to Qiao Shan for me. I’ll treat you to dinner another day.”
Qiao Shan—Huo Jingtian’s real girlfriend.
She was a quiet, gentle girl.
She was also one of Ning Xin’er’s dormmates.
Their relationship wasn’t particularly close, but they weren’t enemies either—just neutral.
“Alright, I’ll do it.”
Ning Xin’er agreed softly and continued eating her wontons.
She had bought them from a famous old shop—the spicy red oil dumplings were authentic and incredibly delicious.
After finishing her meal and cleaning up, she drove back to school.
Huo Jingtian was still in the passenger seat, while she drove.
At this point, she wasn’t just his fake girlfriend—she was also his free chauffeur!
Huo Jingtian sure knew how to enjoy life!
The city’s lights were dazzling, illuminating the night in a mesmerizing display.
Yun City was a bustling metropolis.
But Ning Xin’er still preferred the warmth of Nan City because that was where her mother and Uncle Song were.
That was home.
A yellow Lamborghini blended into the golden glow of the streetlights, brushing past a Cayenne.
In the backseat of the Cayenne, Huo Jinyan suddenly turned his head, glancing out the window.
A flash of yellow sped by.
For some reason, Ning Xin’er’s delicate face appeared in his mind.
Was she in Yun City yet?
“President Huo, Miss Li’s gift is ready. When should we deliver it?” Wang Zhe, his assistant, asked while driving.
Huo Jinyan snapped out of his thoughts.
Pressing his fingers to his temple, he sighed.
Old Master Huo had forced him to pick a gift for Li Qingqing, and he had wasted half the night shopping.
“Send it tomorrow,” he said indifferently.
“Understood.”
Wang Zhe was an excellent assistant, always managing Huo Jinyan’s schedule without a single mistake.
Without another word, Huo Jinyan continued typing on his laptop, handling his work.
…
At the university entrance, Ning Xin’er stopped the car and grabbed the bouquet of blue roses.
She said goodbye to Huo Jingtian, whose task now was to return the rented car.
Apparently, he had only rented it for one night.
“Next time, don’t rent such an expensive car,” she reminded him. “Didn’t you say you come from a middle-class family? You should save where you can and spend wisely. Don’t waste money.”
The first time they met, Huo Jingtian had claimed to be broke.
He told her he was just a middle-class kid with a limited allowance.
In fact, he even borrowed fifty yuan from her.
Back then, Ning Xin’er had been skeptical.
A middle-class kid needing to borrow fifty yuan?
Later, she realized he spent money like water—never hesitating, no matter the amount.
He had the spending habits of the rich but claimed to be middle-class.
“Oh, right! Where’s my luggage?”
Only then did Ning Xin’er remember—her two suitcases were missing!
“Don’t worry, I already had someone send them to your dorm,” Huo Jingtian reassured her, amused by her delayed reaction.
She had gone hours without noticing. What a scatterbrain.
“That’s good. Drive safely. I’m heading in.”
Ning Xin’er sighed in relief.
Her luggage contained special candies she had brought for her dormmates.
Clothes could be replaced.
But those candies… they held sentimental value.
After saying goodbye, she scanned her face at the campus gate and walked in.
Yun City University was vast.
She made her way to the campus bus stop and rode the shuttle back to her dormitory.
When she arrived at Peach Blossom Garden, Building 3, she took the elevator to Room 305.
It was Thursday—her dormmates should be there.
Sure enough, as soon as she opened the door, her three roommates all turned to look at her.
Zeng Yi, who was wearing a face mask, was the first to rush over.
“Everyone thought you weren’t coming back. What made you change your mind?” she asked, surprised.
“You didn’t stay at a hotel with your campus heartthrob boyfriend?”
Zeng Yi studied her expression closely, as if afraid she had suffered some kind of grievance.
After all, Ning Xin’er always returned before 10 PM.
This was the first time she had stayed out this late.
“I was selling flowers at the night market for a few hours. I’ll tell you later. I need to shower first,” Ning Xin’er said, patting Zeng Yi’s shoulder before grabbing her pajamas.
It was already 11 PM.
In half an hour, the dorm lights would be turned off.
Just as she was about to head to the bathroom, she suddenly remembered—she still hadn’t given Qiao Shan the flowers.
Picking up the bouquet, she walked over to the opposite bunk.
“These are from… someone. He asked me to bring them to you.”
