Huo Jinyan avoided his intense gaze.
“Not at the moment.”
Huo Jinyan’s denial left everything uncertain.
“Whew, you scared me.”
“If you like another girl, my sister would be heartbroken.” Li Xinglei took a big gulp of his drink to calm himself down.
Huo Jinyan glanced at him, his dark eyes revealing no emotion.
After a while, Huo Jinyan stood up and said to Li Xinglei, “I’m leaving. I’ll drink with you next time.”
Li Xinglei raised his eyebrows sharply and quickly took another sip. “Wait for me, I’ll come with you.”
The two of them walked out of the bar together, where their respective drivers were waiting for them. After saying their goodbyes, they each headed home.
The black Cayenne car drove smoothly down the spacious road. A breeze drifted through the open window as the city lights illuminated the night, marking the true beginning of nightlife.
Huo Jinyan looked out the window, and once again, a familiar streak of “yellow” sped past them.
This time, it seemed slower than before, allowing him to clearly see the person in the yellow Lamborghini.
“Wang Zhe, has the second young master returned to the old residence recently?” Huo Jinyan asked.
“The second young master hasn’t been back for a month. I heard he’s busy with school.” Wang Zhe answered truthfully, based on what he knew.
Huo Jinyan narrowed his eyes slightly. Busy?
Busy enough to be drag racing in the middle of the night?
“Tell him to go back to see the old master. If he refuses… freeze all his cards.”
Wang Zhe was momentarily stunned. Freezing his cards again?
The second young master had his cards frozen at least five times a month by the eldest young master—sometimes even ten times!
The way these two brothers interacted was something ordinary families couldn’t imitate.
“Understood, I’ll relay the message later.” Wang Zhe focused on driving—safety first.
“Tell him tomorrow.”
“Yes.” Wang Zhe had been bracing himself for another late-night battle of wills with the second young master. Thankfully, it could wait until tomorrow.
With that, Huo Jinyan leaned back in his seat, closed his eyes, and took a nap.
…
The next day was Friday.
On Fridays, school schedules were generally lighter, and many students dragged small suitcases into the classroom, ready to leave as soon as classes ended.
Most of them were heading home or meeting up with their boyfriends or girlfriends.
Ning Xin’er sat in the classroom, pondering how to spend her weekend.
She had no boyfriend, her home in Nancheng was too far away to visit, and her only best friend, Zeng Yi, had plans tomorrow.
Might as well get a part-time job.
Ning Xin’er opened a familiar part-time job app.
She used to work part-time frequently, but as her financial situation improved, she did so less often.
“You want to take on a part-time job?” A small voice reached her ears.
Ning Xin’er looked up and met Qiao Shan’s questioning gaze.
Qiao Shan always spoke in a low voice, her eyes filled with timid hesitation. She was like this with everyone, never daring to be bold.
She rarely took the initiative to talk to Ning Xin’er.
Their most frequent interaction was when Huo Jingtian asked her to pass things to Qiao Shan.
Ning Xin’er instinctively nodded.
“I happen to need someone for tomorrow. Want to come?” Qiao Shan quickly asked. “Selling alcohol at a bar. The commission is pretty high—20%.”
Twenty percent was indeed a good rate.
But…
Seeing Ning Xin’er’s hesitation, Qiao Shan shook her arm gently. “Just come with me, okay?”
Qiao Shan looked at her with big, innocent eyes.
She was momentarily surprised. This was the first time Qiao Shan had spoken so much to her in one go.
And she noticed that there was a slight pleading tone in Qiao Shan’s voice.
It was small and soft like a mosquito, yet sweet and delicate. No wonder… Huo Jingtian liked girls like her.
Even as a girl herself, hearing that gentle voice made Ning Xin’er feel a subconscious urge to protect her.
Slowly, she nodded. “Alright, I’ll go.”
Qiao Shan beamed with a sweet smile. Although her looks were average, her smile gave her a certain charm.
With Ning Xin’er’s approval, Qiao Shan happily returned to her seat.
As time passed, more and more students filled the classroom.
Ning Xin’er had a habit of arriving more than half an hour early, so there weren’t many people around earlier.
Today was a large lecture, combining students from multiple majors into one class.
As the classroom became more crowded, some students recognized her.
“You’re the girl from the confession wall, right? You look even better in person!”
“You’re the school heartthrob’s girlfriend?”
“You’re really beautiful in real life.”
Some bold girls even approached her directly. Ning Xin’er then realized—she had forgotten to wear her mask!
Awkwardly, she smiled but didn’t directly respond.
Fake. It was a fake relationship.
“Tch, what’s she acting all high and mighty for? She only got the school heartthrob because of her looks.”
“Hmph, look at her flaunting herself, acting like she’s the only pretty one.”
“Just because she’s a little attractive, she thinks she’s all that!”
Ning Xiner: “…”
Some girls changed their attitudes so fast it caught her off guard.
What high and mighty attitude? What arrogance? She was about to cry from frustration.
The troubles Huo Jingtian brought her were endless. She had already experienced far worse because of him.
She just hoped this fake relationship would end soon so she could be free.
Luckily, in just over a month, she would start her internship and wouldn’t have to deal with this anymore.
As class time approached, Zeng Yi finally rushed back from the restroom and sat beside her.
Zeng Yi pulled a mask out of her pocket and handed it over. “Here, I knew you’d forget again.”
Ning Xin’er looked at Zeng Yi with gratitude and gave her a big hug. “Zeng Yida, you’re my lucky star! Woohoo!”
Zeng Yi pushed her head away with an eye roll. “Silly girl.”
At noon, Ning Xin’er and Zeng Yi decided to go out for barbecue instead of eating at the school cafeteria.
As they stepped out of the campus gate, Zeng Yi patted Ning Xiner’s shoulder. “Xin’er, isn’t that your boyfriend over there?”
Boyfriend?
Ning Xin’er turned her head and saw Huo Jingtian standing across the street, looking in their direction.
Their eyes met.
Under Zeng Yi’s urging, Ning Xin’er had no choice but to go over and greet Huo Jingtian.
She moved slowly—was he waiting for Qiao Shan?
Had he managed to coax her already?
If she approached him now and Qiao Shan happened to come out, it wouldn’t look good.
But to avoid Zeng Yi noticing anything odd about their fake relationship, Ning Xin’er forced herself to walk over.
She casually exchanged a few words with Huo Jingtian.
At that moment, a black Cayenne pulled up on the side of the road.
From Huo Jinyan’s angle, he could clearly see Ning Xin’er talking intimately with a man. The man had his back turned, so his face wasn’t visible.
After the man walked into the campus, only Ning Xin’er was left standing there.
Huo Jinyan narrowed his eyes and gave a cold command to Wang Zhe. “See that prettiest girl? Drive forward and hit her.”
Wang Zhe froze, unable to believe what he had just heard.
Hit her?
Was he serious?
“What are you waiting for? Drive and hit her!”
Huo Jinyan’s voice turned even colder, firm and unwavering.
