- Chapter 3 - "Becoming A Brother"
Ning Xin’er’s eyes widened in shock. Her future cousin was him? Huo Jinyan? What a joke!
“Aunt, congratulations on your wedding. I’m Huo Jinyan, Third Uncle’s nephew,” Huo Jinyan said politely, his eyes flickering to Ning Xin’er.
“Ah, Huo, I’ve heard so much about you from your uncle. Seeing you today, you’re even more handsome than I imagined,” Wen Nuan admired the young man who approached.
In all of Nancheng, there probably wasn’t a more handsome young man as he is.
Her gaze shifted to Song Yan, her husband, who was renowned as the “most handsome middle-aged man,” and even his nephew surpassed him in looks.
“Xin’er, come here and meet your brother,” Wen Nuan called to her daughter. Ning Xin’er had grown up without siblings, feeling lonely. Having a brother was a pleasant surprise.
Huo Jinyan was from Yun City, just like Ning Xin’er, who studied at university there. This connection gave Wen Nuan some peace of mind regarding her daughter’s safety.
Ning Xin’er lowered her head, her breath catching. Brother? He was now her brother!
Under her mother’s gentle urging, she reluctantly raised her head and met his dark eyes, feigning calm. “Hello, I’m Ning Xin’er.”
She silently fumed. If her mother knew Huo Jinyan was the one from back then, she would regret praising him today.
“Hello, Sister Xin’er,” Huo Jinyan said with a raised eyebrow and a greeting gesture. “From now on, you can call me Brother Yan.”
Huo Jinyan looked at her meaningfully, his eyes like a hunter catching prey. Only Ning Xin’er could see the excitement in his eyes.
Ning Xin’er internally rolled her eyes. Keep pretending.
“Sister Xin’er, do you have a problem with me?” Her small actions didn’t escape Huo Jinyan’s notice, and he asked deliberately.
Ning Xin’er glared at him briefly, then forced a smile. “You’re joking, Brother. I’m thrilled to have such a handsome brother.”
“That’s good,” Huo Jinyan smirked, returning to his stoic demeanor.
The wedding ceremony began. Ning Xin’er, as the ring bearer, stayed close to the bride.
With the music playing, the newlyweds entered the scene. Her mother, Wen Nuan, walked gracefully in a white wedding dress and high heels. Time hadn’t defeated her beauty, something Ning Xin’er deeply felt.
Wen Nuan, in her forties, maintained an excellent figure, looking like a woman in her twenties, with a graceful, beautiful face like an elegant swan.
One couldn’t help but sigh, imagining how radiant young Wen Nuan must have been.
Song Yan, with a smile of happiness, watched his beloved approaching, his eyes full of love. His smiling eyes had wrinkles, but they didn’t diminish his distinguished aura.
This was the epitome of a “handsome older man.”
After exchanging rings, the room erupted in applause, blessing the newlyweds.
Ning Xin’er’s eyes teared up as she saw her mother’s happiness. Her mother deserved to be happy.
After the ceremony, many guests came to toast.
“Congratulations, Mr. Song, Mrs. Song.”
“Mr. Song, Mrs. Song, wishing you a lifetime of happiness.”
“Ha ha, thank you.”
“Thank you.”
Ning Xin’er followed the newlyweds, helping them pour drinks, while Huo Jinyan surprisingly took on the task of carrying the drink tray. Although these tasks were usually done by the waitstaff, Ning Xin’er wanted to be involved, so she dismissed them.
Watching her mother’s smile, Ning Xin’er felt utterly content.
Why Huo Jinyan took on the task remained a mystery. His status made it hard to believe he was willingly carrying drinks.
Some guests found Huo Jinyan familiar and couldn’t help but glance at him a few times. Nancheng wasn’t known for big names; it had many small business owners but very few big bosses.
Unable to recall, they didn’t dwell on it.
As they walked, Huo Jinyan’s shirt sleeve brushed against Ning Xin’er’s arm, causing a tickling sensation. Once could be a coincidence, but two, three… six times?
Ning Xin’er suspected he was doing it on purpose.
Annoyed, she glanced up at him, looking for evidence. Huo Jinyan appeared unfazed, never meeting her gaze. Had she guessed wrong?
Doubting herself, Ning Xin’er refocused on pouring drinks for the newlyweds.
As she turned away, Huo Jinyan glanced at her face, a faint mischievous smile on his lips.
After over an hour, Ning Xin’er finally sat down to eat.
“Third Uncle, Grandpa… actually misses you,” Huo Jinyan said seriously, sipping his drink.
Song Yan’s expression faltered, sighing. “You know, your grandpa didn’t approve of me marrying your Aunt. Every visit ends with a scolding.”
It had been over a year since he’d visited the Huo family. Even during holidays, he sent gifts by courier.
Mr. Huo had opposed the marriage from the start. When Song Yan first mentioned marrying Wen Nuan, Mr. Huo strongly objected. That night, he was kicked out, not allowed to come back without admitting he was wrong.
“I’ve missed too many years with your Aunt. I’m too old to leave regrets,” Song Yan said sincerely.
Everyone knew he’d secretly loved Wen Nuan since his youth but was too late to confess. He lived with regret for years. After the Ning family’s bankruptcy and Wen Nuan’s husband’s desertion, he courageously pursued her openly.
To win her heart, he left Yun City, moved to Nancheng, and started a cultural company, staying by her side.
His perseverance paid off; he won her heart.
“But, Third Uncle…”
“Huo Jinyan, you’re young. You might not understand the true meaning of loving someone deeply. Your Aunt means the world to me,” Song Yan interrupted. “As for your Grandpa, I’ll bring your Aunt to visit another day.”
The true meaning of loving someone?
Huo Jinyan pondered. Would he ever love someone like that?
Song Yan looked down the hall at Ning Xin’er, who was eating heartily.
“Huo Jinyan, what do you think of Xin’er?”
