- Chapter 12: Big Sister
Ye Yi’an stared at Ye Jiayuan’s hand resting on Fu Chaoying’s shoulder, her expression dimming. “Sis, why are you here?”
Ye Jiayuan’s gaze merely flickered over her before she replied coolly, “Work wrapped up early.”
Without another word, she ignored the curious glances around them and lowered her eyes slightly, fixing them on Fu Chaoying’s clear, bright ones. “President Fu is looking for you.”
It was clearly a tactful excuse.
Fu Chaoying understood immediately. She nodded gracefully at a newly acquainted friend nearby and smiled. “Excuse me.”
The two walked side by side, their steps unhurried.
Fu Chaoying followed Ye Jiayuan straight toward the exit. At some point, the reassuring weight on her shoulder vanished, and the lingering scent of magnolia in the air seemed to drift further away.
Her heart suddenly felt hollow. Unable to help herself, she turned to look at Ye Jiayuan, only to be pulled back by the woman’s cool voice: “Why didn’t you retaliate earlier?”
Fu Chaoying’s eyes dimmed slightly, a trace of dejection flashing through them before she averted her gaze. “It wouldn’t have been appropriate in that setting,” she murmured, her voice so soft it was almost lost, like a whisper of night breeze.
Ye Jiayuan studied her for a moment, noting the faint pink flush spreading from her cheeks to her neck before looking away again. “Xingye is the sponsor today. You don’t need to worry about the setting.”
“Don’t forget—you’re a Xingye shareholder,” she added, her tone softening slightly.
“Then… I still have to consider Xingye’s reputation,” Fu Chaoying replied obediently, though a hint of mischief flickered in the corners of her eyes.
“Should I thank you on behalf of the company, then?”
Rarely one to joke, Ye Jiayuan’s words made Fu Chaoying’s heart skip. She couldn’t resist tugging lightly at her sleeve. “Good thing you came, sis.”
She called her sis. Not in the midst of thunderstorm-induced fear, nor in the heat of drunken affection.
Ye Jiayuan’s gaze dropped to the slender fingers clutching her sleeve, her throat moving slightly. After a long pause, she finally let out a quiet “Mm.”
Within seconds, Fu Chaoying released her grip and smoothly shifted the topic. “Then, sis, what privileges do Xingye shareholders have?”
Ye Jiayuan answered concisely yet professionally.
In summary, the two most important rights were dividends and voting power.
“Do I have to attend shareholder meetings too?” Fu Chaoying blinked curiously, her demeanor both docile and lively.
Ye Jiayuan nodded. “There’s one the day after tomorrow. You can come if you want.”
“But I don’t know anyone except you, sis,” Fu Chaoying sighed, eyeing the Bentley before them. It was safe to say she was a stranger in unfamiliar territory.
Even after they got into the car, Ye Jiayuan didn’t respond to that remark.
A brief silence settled in the cabin. Just as Fu Chaoying was about to change the subject to break the ice, a cool voice sounded beside her—
“You seemed perfectly at ease earlier. I doubt a small shareholders’ meeting would trouble you.”
Fu Chaoying froze for a second before tilting her head to look at Ye Jiayuan, blinking innocently. “Did I?”
Without lifting her gaze from the tablet in her hands, Ye Jiayuan gave a faint “Mm.”
Her voice was soft, yet inexplicably carried a hint of emotional fluctuation.
Fu Chaoying’s mind inexplicably recalled the oil painting she had seen that morning, her eyes crinkling slightly.
The abrupt ring of a phone shattered the delicate atmosphere.
Fu Chaoying answered the call. It was her aunt, Fu Anjun, who couldn’t find her and was worried she had drunk too much.
“I only had a little. I just ran into Jiayuan-jie and left with her,” Fu Chaoying replied sweetly before handing the phone to Ye Jiayuan.
After exchanging a few pleasantries, Ye Jiayuan returned the phone to her.
As Fu Chaoying reached out to take it, her fingers briefly brushed against Ye Jiayuan’s warm fingertips. But before she could savor the touch, the other woman had already withdrawn her hand.
Her stomach chose that moment to growl loudly, prompting Fu Chaoying to ask, “Are you hungry, Sister?”
Ye Jiayuan lifted her gaze from the screen and looked at her. “You’re hungry?”
Fu Chaoying nodded eagerly, her eyes full of anticipation, only to hear a calm reply: “I don’t make a habit of eating late-night snacks.”
Well, that was principled.
Fu Chaoying mumbled, “Okay,” her tone tinged with disappointment.
Ye Jiayuan seemed to pick up on it and added, “Takeout is fine, though.”
Fu Chaoying’s eyes lit up instantly. “Yes!”
Ye Jiayuan gave the driver an address—what sounded like a lively street.
“You’ll probably like it.”
Fu Chaoying didn’t press for details, but when they arrived, she understood why Ye Jiayuan had said that.
Because Ye Jiayuan had brought her to a night market.
Fu Chaoying glanced at Ye Jiayuan’s expensive evening gown, then at the bustling night market outside the window, hesitating before speaking. “Maybe… we should go somewhere else?”
Ye Jiayuan shook her head. “No need.”
As soon as she said this, the assistant in the passenger seat, Liu, began reciting a list of dishes.
Fu Chaoying quickly ordered two items before Liu got out of the car.
Curious, Fu Chaoying asked, “How does she know this place so well?”
“Her girlfriend likes to eat here. They come often,” Ye Jiayuan explained simply.
Fu Chaoying smiled faintly. “Her girlfriend must be really happy.”
Before the words fully left her lips, she met Ye Jiayuan’s deep gaze. Just for a moment—then Ye Jiayuan lowered her eyes back to her documents.
Bored, Fu Chaoying pulled out her phone to reply to messages.
Her rapid, frequent typing caught Ye Jiayuan’s attention.
Ye Jiayuan cleared her throat. “What perfume are you wearing?”
Without looking up, Fu Chaoying answered, “Rosewater.”
“Oh. The scent lingers quite a while.”
Fu Chaoyuan finally glanced up, feigning nonchalance. “Hmm?”
Ye Jiayuan held her gaze and said flatly, “My bedroom smells like it now.”
Fu Chaoying’s heart skipped a beat, but she forced a lighthearted smile. “Do you like the scent?”
Before Ye Jiayuan could answer, Liu returned with fragrant takeout. “Miss Jiayuan, here you go.”
“Thanks, Sister Liu!” Fu Chaoying reached for the food.
At the sweetly uttered “Sister Liu,” Ye Jiayuan shot her a subtle glance.
As the car headed toward the hotel, Fu Chaoying discreetly checked the weather forecast before turning off her screen.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Ye Jiayuan’s tablet screen—displaying a property floor plan.
When they arrived, the two got out of the car.
Holding the takeout, Fu Chaoying asked sheepishly, “Can I eat this at your place?”
This was a rather whimsical request.
Ye Jiayuan tilted her head to look at her, silently urging her to explain.
“I’m afraid…” Fu Chaoying paused mid-sentence, then, remembering the clear skies outside, changed her excuse. “I’m not used to eating alone.”
Lowering her voice slightly, she added, “I won’t disturb your work, Jiayuan-jie.”
Ye Jiayuan gave a slight nod, and upon seeing her downcast eyes, softly hummed in agreement.
“Then I’ll be bothering you, Jiayuan-jie!” Fu Chaoying chirped cheerfully.
With a resigned smile, Ye Jiayuan swiped her card and led her upstairs.
This was Fu Chaoying’s second time visiting Ye Jiayuan’s place. Seizing the relaxed atmosphere, she casually asked, “Why haven’t you settled down here, Jiayuan-jie?”
“Family rarely visits. Whether I settle or not makes no difference,” Ye Jiayuan replied nonchalantly.
Fu Chaoying couldn’t help but wonder—hadn’t she just been browsing real estate listings?
Ye Jiayuan retreated to her study to work.
Fu Chaoying sat at the dining table, nibbling on her late-night snack, when she noticed Ye Jiayuan emerge with her laptop.
Her gaze followed, expecting her to head to the balcony, but instead, Ye Jiayuan walked straight over and took a seat across from her.
Fu Chaoying blinked, only then realizing—was Ye Jiayuan planning to… keep her company while she ate?
“You don’t have to mind me, Jiayuan-jie,” Fu Chaoying murmured.
“It’s fine,” Ye Jiayuan replied, fingers tapping lightly on the keyboard, her focus unwavering.
Even after Fu Chaoying finished her snack, Ye Jiayuan remained engrossed in her work.
Sitting quietly, Fu Chaoying drifted into a daze when suddenly, a distant rumble of thunder echoed through the night.
The weather forecast hadn’t lied—thunder at this hour, just as predicted.
A glint flashed in Fu Chaoying’s eyes as she feigned distress, gazing imploringly at Ye Jiayuan—
“It sounds like the thunder’s back. Can I stay over at your place again tonight, Jiayuan-jie?”
A barely perceptible ripple stirred in Ye Jiayuan’s gaze. She studied her for two long seconds before finally nodding in assent.
