- Chapter 22.2: Temptation
Fu Chaoying walked over to the little Pomeranian, crouched down, and gently stroked its soft fur.
When she turned her head, she noticed Ye Jiayuan standing far away, not approaching, just quietly watching her.
Fu Chaoying realized that Ye Jiayuan might not like dogs.
She suddenly remembered that when they were children, Ye Jiayuan hadn’t liked her either, finding her a crybaby nuisance and refusing to play with her.
The thought amused Fu Chaoying, and she couldn’t help but smile. Turning back to Ye Jiayuan, she asked in a playful, expectant tone, “Jiayuan-jie, do you want to pet it?”
Ye Jiayuan paused slightly, then shook her head. “You go ahead.”
Knowing she wasn’t interested, Fu Chaoying didn’t press further. Soon after, she followed the shelter director to complete the adoption paperwork.
Ye Jiayuan led her outside and asked, “Since you’re back for once, is there anything special you’d like to eat?”
Thinking of all the delicious food from their alma mater, Fu Chaoying blinked. “What I want to eat, you might…”
Ye Jiayuan understood what she meant and nodded indulgently. “You decide.”
“That place is close. Let’s walk.”
As they strolled through the campus, several students recognized Ye Jiayuan, and some even recognized Fu Chaoying—as the ex-girlfriend of a famous actress and one of the inheritors of Southern-style ink painting, she had some fame of her own.
Fu Chaoying took out a spare mask from her bag and handed it to Ye Jiayuan, sighing lightly. “Seems like we’ll need masks when visiting our alma mater from now on.”
Ye Jiayuan took it but noticed Fu Chaoying didn’t pull out another one. “Aren’t you wearing one?”
Fu Chaoying had only brought one. She shook her head and teased, “You should wear it. You’re more recognizable. Otherwise, we’ll be stopped every few steps with people greeting you—’Hello, Senior Ye!’”
There was a hint of jealousy in her tone.
A faint, almost imperceptible smile flickered in Ye Jiayuan’s eyes.
As they walked, Fu Chaoying shared amusing stories from her college days—like when her roommates got drunk after breakups, leaving her, the juice-drinker, sober and mocked for ages.
“Jiayuan-jie, what about you? Any fun stories from your college days?”
“I was very busy in college—just studying and working. I wasn’t close with my roommates,” Ye Jiayuan replied flatly.
She hadn’t had much time to experience campus life.
Fu Chaoying pressed her lips together, a pang of sympathy rising in her chest. She slowed her pace and led Ye Jiayuan to a small, unassuming eatery at the end of the street. “How about this place?”
Ye Jiayuan barely glanced at it before walking in without hesitation, showing no sign of disdain.
She was surprisingly down-to-earth.
Fu Chaoying smiled and followed her inside, choosing a seat by the window. She picked up the menu and ordered a few signature dishes.
“Every time my dorm had a gathering, we came here. None of the dishes ever disappoint.”
Ye Jiayuan gave a slight nod and asked casually, “Does your dorm often have gatherings?”
Fu Chaoying remained silent for a moment before replying, “They gather frequently.”
Ye Jiayuan gazed into her eyes briefly but didn’t press further.
Noticing her gaze, Fu Chaoying added an explanation, “I spend most of my free time in the art studio, so I rarely join their gatherings.”
And during her limited spare time, she was almost always with Ye Yi’an.
Ye Jiayuan gave a soft hum, seemingly indifferent, and didn’t say anything more.
Fu Chaoying smoothly changed the subject, talking about the restaurant’s specialties.
The two slowly finished their meal.
The topic of romance was never brought up again—though the atmosphere at Nan University had seemed just right.
Feeling a vague sense of loss, Fu Chaoying turned to her and asked, “Do you have any plans for this afternoon?”
Ye Jiayuan looked at her deeply before slowly responding, “I’ll follow your lead.”
Once again, she left the choice to her.
Fu Chaoying blinked and tentatively suggested, “Then… how about going to my place?”
After a brief pause, Ye Jiayuan agreed, “Alright.”
Fu Chaoying pressed her lips together, unsure why she had invited Ye Jiayuan home.
Before she could think it through, the words had already slipped out.
And so, she took Ye Jiayuan home.
Aunt Wu was pleasantly surprised to see Ye Jiayuan again and hurried to prepare afternoon tea.
But Fu Chaoying led Ye Jiayuan straight upstairs and opened the door to her bedroom.
Ye Jiayuan stood at the doorway, watching her slender figure and the fair skin beneath her ponytail.
Her gaze darkened, but she didn’t step inside. “I’ll wait here.”
As if compelled, Fu Chaoying grabbed her wrist and pulled her in.
Ye Jiayuan glanced at the bed, her mind flashing with images, only to hear Fu Chaoying say, “Look.”
Following her finger, Ye Jiayuan saw two identical teddy bears lying side by side on the bed, carefully tucked under a thin blanket.
Ye Jiayuan turned to her with sudden understanding, a hint of amusement in her eyes. “You brought this one too.”
It was the bear she had given her during that stormy night.
“So…” Ye Jiayuan held her gaze, leaning in slowly as she asked the long-unspoken question, “Will you say yes?”
Her voice was soft but carried an irresistible tenderness.
Fu Chaoying’s heart raced, though she only blinked and feigned ignorance. “Say yes to what?”
Ye Jiayuan paused briefly, a trace of helplessness flickering in her eyes. “You know what I mean.”
The game of riddles began.
Fu Chaoying thought someone as composed as her wouldn’t ask again, but then she heard her low voice press once more, “Will you be my girlfriend?”
Her heart stirred, but she stepped closer, their noses almost touching, and replied nonchalantly, “Sure, but… I have conditions.”
Her tone lifted slightly, laced with a teasing allure.
A quiet smile crept into Ye Jiayuan’s eyes, curiosity gleaming within them. “What conditions?”
Fu Chaoying’s grin widened as she took half a step back, gazing at the blue sky outside. Lightly, she said, “First, we won’t make our relationship public until we truly understand each other’s hearts.”
She knew that Ye Jiayuan always prioritized caution, never engaging in unprepared battles—this condition should suit her perfectly.
Ye Jiayuan gave a slight nod. “Naturally.”
To recklessly go public without confirming each other’s feelings would be irresponsible—not just to one another, but also to the long-standing friendship between the Ye and Fu families.
Fu Chaoying turned to face her, gaze earnest and resolute. “Second, if we don’t develop mutual understanding within a year, we’ll dissolve the relationship. Of course, either party can withdraw if they feel it’s untenable.”
This was one of the conditions Ye Jiayuan had proposed herself that day.
A flicker of complex emotion passed through Ye Jiayuan’s eyes, but her response was firm: “Agreed.”
“Third,” Fu Chaoying’s gaze lingered on her face, “we don’t interfere with each other’s social circles. We give each other enough space.”
Instead of answering directly, Ye Jiayuan countered, “Did she interfere with yours before?”
Both knew exactly who “she” referred to—Fu Chaoying’s ex, Ye Jiayuan’s younger sister.
Fu Chaoying paused, memories surfacing before she replied softly, “She wouldn’t even let me glance at the magnolias in hotel lobbies.”
She remembered Ye Yi’an joking, “I’ll plant more magnolias in our yard so you won’t keep eyeing others’ flowers.”
Of course, in the end, it was Ye Yi’an who strayed.
Ye Jiayuan’s eyes dimmed slightly, her voice lowering. “So that’s why you rarely joined your roommates’ gatherings in college.”
Fu Chaoying nodded. “Yeah.”
“Then this condition is unnecessary. I won’t restrict your friendships.” Ye Jiayuan held her gaze. “Anything else?”
“That’s all.” Fu Chaoying stepped closer, inhaling the faint magnolia scent clinging to her.
Lost in thought, Ye Jiayuan stiffened slightly when her hand was suddenly grasped.
After a few seconds of no reciprocation, Fu Chaoying released it, pouting. “Jiayuan-jie still seems unaccustomed to this role…”
Her tone carried a playful coquetry, like a kitten kneading at one’s heart.
The corner of Ye Jiayuan’s lips lifted imperceptibly as she feigned ignorance. “What role?”
Fu Chaoying blinked mischievously. “I’m not sure either.”
Locking eyes, Fu Chaoying gripped her shoulders, pulling her forward abruptly before rising on tiptoe to whisper by her ear, “Maybe… Fu Chaoying’s girlfriend.”
Warm breath brushed Ye Jiayuan’s sensitive earlobe, sending a shiver through her.
That teasing, spoiled-laden voice echoed in her mind.
Only the physical reaction made their romantic reality sink in.
When no movement followed, Fu Chaoying withdrew again, putting distance between them. “Since you’re still inexperienced, perhaps I should reconsider—”
Before she could finish or Ye Jiayuan react, Fu Chaoying turned to leave—only to be yanked back.
Then, warmth enveloped her, the delicate magnolia fragrance filling her senses—
Ye Jiayuan had pulled her into an embrace.
“Too late for regrets now.”
Her voice was cool yet tender, laced with quiet dominance.
