- Chapter 29.2: Compensation
Fu Chaoying lay on the bed, steadying her breathing, yet flashes of moments replayed in her mind. She closed her eyes, savoring the lingering heat of their earlier kiss.
A certain sticky sensation snapped her back to reality. She sat up abruptly, retrieving a fresh set of underwear from the wardrobe before heading to the bathroom.
After changing, she shook her head lightly—she couldn’t dwell on this. Otherwise, sleep would be impossible tonight.
Listening to a meditation video meant to aid sleep, Fu Chaoying’s thoughts strayed again, consumed entirely by Ye Jiayuan.
The warmth and pressure of her hands still seemed to linger at her waist, her tongue still tingling faintly. Taking a deep breath, Fu Chaoying got out of bed and dug out a certain toy from the depths of her wardrobe, disinfecting it.
This was the first time she had indulged in self-relief with such vivid imagery in mind.
Much later, after waves of trembling and uneven breaths, drowsiness finally overtook her.
The next morning, Fu Chaoying was predictably awakened by her aunt.
The moment her mind cleared, she could still feel an undeniable, lingering sensation in a certain part of her body.
She quickly rushed to the bathroom, splashing cold water on her face to force herself awake.
But the reflection in the mirror showed her cheeks tinged with an unnatural flush.
How embarrassing. She and Ye Jiayuan had only just confirmed their relationship—how could she already be like this…?
It took her over ten minutes to calm down.
By the time she finished freshening up and went downstairs, the living room was lively—Aunt Chu had arrived.
Spotting Fu Chaoying, Aunt Chu smiled. “You’re awake, Xiaoying. Shouldn’t you sleep a little longer?”
Fu Chaoying’s gaze briefly crossed Ye Jiayuan’s before she averted it awkwardly, replying to Aunt Chu with a smile, “Early to bed and early to rise keeps you healthy.”
She took a seat beside her cousin, facing Ye Jiayuan directly.
Aunt Chu asked about her recent life, and Fu Chaoying answered politely.
Struggling to keep her eyes from drifting toward Ye Jiayuan, she heard Aunt Chu say, “You’ve really been troubled by our Xiaoyuan. This girl even hid at your place just to avoid my nagging about marriage.”
Aunt Chu then shot a reproachful look at Ye Jiayuan. “And you have the nerve to bother even your younger sister.”
Ye Jiayuan dipped her head slightly. “You’ve always taught me to stay close to my sisters.”
Aunt Chu choked back a retort before sighing. “You always have an answer for everything.”
Fu Chaoying smiled faintly and smoothed things over: “Auntie, you’re too kind. When I was in Singapore, Jiayuan-jie took great care of me.”
Though that “care” had extended… all the way to the bedroom.
As she spoke, Fu Chaoying glanced at Ye Jiayuan, who returned her gaze. For a moment, their eyes locked.
Memories of last night flashed through her mind, making Fu Chaoying’s cheeks flush slightly. She quickly averted her eyes.
After some casual conversation, Chu Yiyun invited them all back to the Ye residence—it had been a long time since both families had gathered together, and this time almost everyone was present.
Fu Anjun, representing both Fu Chaoying and her sister Fu Chaohua, readily agreed, which delighted Aunt Chu immensely.
After breakfast together, Ye Jiayuan went upstairs to get her suitcase.
Fu Chaoying only glanced at her out of the corner of her eye before being warmly pulled into the living room by Aunt Chu for a chat.
While smiling and making small talk, Fu Chaoying suddenly felt a pang of loss. Now that Aunt Chu and her aunt had seen through them, how could Ye Jiayuan continue using “avoiding blind dates” as an excuse to stay at her place?
The group set off for the Ye residence.
To avoid suspicion, Fu Chaoying drove her own car. When the passenger door opened, her heart skipped a beat—only to look up and see her cousin Fu Chaohua.
“Didn’t want to ride with Mom, so I’m hitching a ride with you.”
Fu Chaoying composed herself and smiled. “Perfect timing. I was worried the drive would be lonely.”
Fu Chaohua chuckled lightly before speaking, “Mom asked about your relationship with Jiayuan-jie.”
Fu Chaoying, who hadn’t yet shifted gears, paused slightly at the words, blinking before replying in a deliberately casual tone, “How did you answer, sis?”
“I said…” Fu Chaohua let out a soft laugh, “I told her Jiayuan-jie isn’t the type to engage much with others, so the two of you aren’t particularly close.”
Fu Chaoying also smiled faintly. “Jiayuan-jie… that’s true.”
Fu Chaohua teased, “True about what? That she’s… especially different toward you?”
Fu Chaoying shook her head lightly. “Not at all.”
The car moved forward slowly, keeping pace with the vehicle ahead.
When they arrived at the Ye residence, Chu Yiyun invited everyone to play Guandan, a popular card game.
Ye Jiayuan, as usual, didn’t participate in such recreational activities and instead retreated to the study to handle work matters.
Fu Chaoying pressed her lips together—their rare moments alone had been abruptly interrupted.
As the group chatted, Fu Anjun suddenly recalled the collaborative project Ye Jiayuan had introduced to Fu Chaoying earlier. “How’s the progress on that?”
Fu Chaoying realized she had forgotten to reply to Senior Dong’s WeChat message.
She smiled now. “I’ve been swamped this week. We’ve scheduled a detailed discussion at their company next week.”
Chu Yiyun chuckled warmly. “Xiao Yuan was previously focused on Singapore and Hong Kong, so she hasn’t paid enough attention to these younger sisters.”
“Now that her business priorities have shifted somewhat, it’s time she looked out for Xiao Ying and the others.”
Fu Chaoying smiled faintly, deftly steering the conversation elsewhere. “Senior Dong happened to invite Jiayuan-jie and me back to Nanda University together. I wonder if Jiayuan-jie will be free tonight.”
Both Chu Yiyun and Fu Anjun knew Dong Muyu—she was the granddaughter of their teacher, Bai Youqing.
Chu Yiyun’s eyes lit up at the mention. “What do you think of Xiao Dong? Would she be a good match for Xiao Yuan?”
A question mark flashed in Fu Chaoying’s mind, but she sidestepped the implication. “Senior Dong seems nice, but I’ve only met her once.”
Chu Yiyun’s eyes gleamed. “Then what does Xiao Yuan think of her?”
A flicker of resignation passed through Fu Chaoying, though her expression remained unchanged. She simply smiled and said, “You’ll have to ask Jiayuan-jie about that. She doesn’t discuss such things with me.”
Chu Yiyun made up her mind. “Then I’ll ask her later.”
Fu Chaoying pressed her lips together and didn’t bring it up again.
A trace of displeasure flashed in Fu Anjun’s eyes before she quickly masked it.
When lunchtime arrived, Chu Yiyun indeed broached the subject. “Xiao Ying mentioned that Old Lady Bai’s granddaughter invited you two back to Nanda tonight. Are you free?”
Ye Jiayuan glanced at Fu Chaoying imperceptibly before giving a slight nod.
“I’ve met Xiao Dong—she has a great personality and is quite beautiful,” Chu Yiyun hinted. “What do you think of her?”
Hearing this, Fu Chaohua’s gaze shifted between Fu Chaoying and Ye Jiayuan before settling on the latter. The other woman responded with a simple, “She’s fine.”
Fu Chaoying looked up at her, only to hear her add nonchalantly, “But she’s not my type.”
Chu Yiyun’s temper flared instantly. She set down her chopsticks. “Then tell me what kind you like! I can introduce you to someone!”
“Look at Auntie Fu—she has a wide network and can introduce you to people too.”
Fu Anjun also chimed in with a smile.
Chu Yiyun turned to the younger generation. “If that doesn’t work, there’s always Xiao Ying and Xiao Hua’s classmates or friends.”
Fu Chaoying exhaled almost imperceptibly. Under the collective gaze, she looked at Ye Jiayuan, only to see the faintest hint of a smile on her lips as she said, “I already have someone in mind. No need to worry.”
Fu Chaoying’s eyes subtly curved with amusement as she listened to Chu Yiyun’s eager, detailed questioning.
Ye Jiayuan naturally remained tight-lipped.
Though Chu Yiyun’s expression gave nothing away, inwardly she was worried—had Xiaoyuan simply made up someone to placate her?
Meanwhile, Fu Anjun’s heart sank slightly as she discreetly glanced at her daughter, who was quietly focused on her meal.
The dinner was a tense affair, with everyone harboring their own thoughts.
The afternoon passed without further card games, and the group gathered in the courtyard for tea.
Ye Jiayuan, having finished lunch, retreated to the study.
Fu Chaohua leaned in to whisper to Fu Chaoying, “Are you close with Xiao Dong?”
The question sounded like casual gossip, yet carried an undertone of probing.
A thought flickered through Fu Chaoying’s mind, and she chuckled lightly. “Sis, why don’t you join us tonight?”
Fu Chaohua paused, then took a sip of tea before replying, “We’re not really familiar. It might be awkward.”
Her tone carried a hint of reluctance.
Fu Chaoying found this even more intriguing and smiled. “Senior Dong has a great personality—it definitely won’t be awkward.”
After a moment’s consideration, Fu Chaohua relented. “Let’s see if Mom wants me to go.”
Fu Chaoying mused that Fu Anjun would probably be thrilled if she did.
Sure enough, when it was time for Fu Chaoying and Ye Jiayuan to leave, she smoothly suggested, “Sis, come with us? You can show us around!”
Fu Chaohua glanced at Fu Anjun, seeking her approval.
Fu Anjun quickly nodded. “You girls go have fun. Aunt Chu and I can catch up on some dramas.”
Fu Chaoying observed her aunt’s expression and tone, a spark of interest flashing in her eyes.
The three of them rode together in Ye Jiayuan’s car, with Ye taking the passenger seat out of courtesy while the Fu sisters sat in the back.
Fu Chaoying subtly steered the conversation toward Dong Muyu, but Fu Chaohua deftly changed the subject.
Taking the hint, Fu Chaoying dropped it, though she noticed from the corner of her eye that Ye Jiayuan had closed her eyes, seemingly resting.
They hadn’t had a chance to be alone all day, and Fu Chaoying pressed her lips together.
