- Chapter 31: “Miss You.”
The air seemed to freeze, leaving only the sound of their mingled breaths in each other’s ears.
Fu Chaoying turned toward the direction of the voice but suddenly realized her hand had already been released. Her palm felt empty, as though she had lost some precious treasure.
“Go ahead.” Ye Jiayuan’s voice was low, carrying a barely perceptible huskiness, as if suppressing some surging emotion.
Fu Chaoying turned her head instantly, catching sight of the faint redness lingering at the corners of her eyes, like a newly bloomed red rose—delicate and alluring, yet tinged with a restrained beauty.
Her expression, however, had already returned to normal, as though everything that had just transpired was nothing more than a fleeting, enchanting dream.
Fu Chaoying instinctively lowered her gaze to Ye Jiayuan’s slightly disheveled shirt, where the creases at the chest were particularly noticeable, exuding a disarrayed sort of charm.
Those were the traces of her earlier exploration.
Forcing herself to look away, Fu Chaoying steadied her breathing, cleared her throat, and then called out brightly, “Coming!”
She tried her best to keep any unusual tremor from her voice, but a faint quiver still slipped through at the end.
As she spoke, she placed a hand on Ye Jiayuan’s shoulder and slid off her lap. But just as she was about to leave, Ye Jiayuan caught the back of her neck.
Ye Jiayuan’s warm fingertips brushed against her skin, sending a familiar, tingling shiver down her spine.
Then, Ye Jiayuan pressed a kiss to her lips.
Light as a dragonfly skimming water, fleeting yet laden with an indescribable tenderness.
Fu Chaoying glanced back repeatedly as she slowly walked out of the study. Once in the bathroom, she took a deep breath in front of the mirror, trying desperately to calm her racing heart.
She splashed cold water on her face and carefully inspected her reflection, making sure no obvious telltale marks remained before finally relaxing a little.
By the time she went downstairs, Fu Anjun, Chu Yiyun, and Fu Chaohua were already seated in the game room, chatting animatedly.
Chu Yiyun glanced at her, noticing the lingering shimmer at the corners of her eyes. Recalling Ye Jiayuan’s earlier aloof demeanor, she couldn’t help but ask sympathetically, “Did your Jiayuan-jie bully you?”
Bully…
Images of certain intimate scenes flashed through Fu Chaoying’s mind, making her ears burn. She curved her lips into a smile. “I went to wash my face. I didn’t sleep well last night, and I was afraid I’d be too groggy to play cards later.”
Fu Anjun gave her a concerned look. “Come sit down.”
Fu Chaoying exhaled quietly in relief.
Fu Chaohua’s lips curled almost imperceptibly as she glanced at her sister, who appeared completely composed—as if her visit to Jiayuan-jie’s study had truly been just for work.
She chuckled inwardly. Her little sister was quite the actress.
After lunch, Ye Jiayuan prepared to leave for the airport.
Chu Yiyun reluctantly saw her to the door, exchanging a few stiff pleasantries.
Ye Jiayuan gave a slight nod but didn’t provoke her further.
Fu Chaoying watched her silently, only to find Ye Jiayuan’s gaze sweeping over—not just at her, but also at Fu Chaohua.
“Once you’ve confirmed your travel dates to Hong Kong, let me know in advance so I can make arrangements,” Ye Jiayuan said, her eyes shifting between Fu Chaoying and Fu Chaohua with an inscrutable air.
Fu Chaoying hummed softly, a smile playing on her lips. “Have a safe trip, Jiayuan-jie.”
Fu Chaohua’s gaze flickered between the two, her eyes crinkling slightly as she linked arms with Fu Chaoying and turned to Fu Anjun and Chu Yiyun. “Mom, Auntie, why don’t Xiao Ying and I see Jiayuan-jie off?”
Fu Chaoying’s heart leapt with quiet delight, and she looked expectantly at Fu Anjun.
Fu Anjun had been thinking the same thing and smiled warmly. “We’ll be imposing on your Jiayuan-jie next week. It’s only right to see her off.”
Fu Chaoying’s eyes curved into crescents as she and Fu Chaohua boarded the Ye family’s car together.
Ye Jiayuan, as usual, took the front passenger seat, while Fu Chaoying and Fu Chaohua settled into the back.
Fu Chaoying could still only see Ye Jiayuan’s profile.
Her silhouette was cool and composed, a stark contrast to the person who had held her tightly in the study hours earlier, kissing her with unrestrained passion.
Fu Chaoying was lost in thought as she gazed at Ye Jiayuan’s side profile when Fu Chaohua suddenly spoke up, “Jiayuan-jie, my advisor needs me for something, so I’ll have to head to the university. You can drop me off at the subway station later.”
Ye Jiayuan gave a soft hum of acknowledgment and added, “Message me when you get there.”
Fu Chaoying immediately understood, her heart leaping with quiet delight. She turned to Fu Chaohua, only to find her grinning back, her eyes practically spelling out, “Isn’t your sister the most considerate?”
Fu Chaoying smiled sweetly, but ten seconds later, she received a WeChat message from Fu Chaohua:
[So what exactly is going on between you two?]
Fu Chaoying blinked and replied:
[Just good sisters. ❤️]
Since when do “good sisters” exchange such loaded glances… Fu Chaohua shot her a sidelong look and typed back:
[Keep it appropriate. 🙂]
Fu Chaoying:
[My sister’s the best~ 😘]
When they reached the subway station, Fu Chaohua got out of the car, casually adding before leaving, “Jiayuan-jie, why don’t you move to the back? It’s more spacious.”
Ye Jiayuan hummed softly again. “Be careful on your way.”
Fu Chaoying watched eagerly as Ye Jiayuan walked to the back and took the seat beside her.
A faint scent of magnolia drifted over, and Fu Chaoying’s heartbeat quickened involuntarily.
She discreetly hooked her fingers around Ye Jiayuan’s sleeve, only for her hand to be caught and held in return.
The driver was one Chu Yiyun often used, so the two of them maintained a silent understanding, communicating only through their eyes.
The car was quiet, filled only with the sound of their soft, interwoven breaths.
Within moments, Ye Jiayuan closed her eyes to rest.
Fu Chaoying lightly traced her palm, only for Ye Jiayuan to grasp her hand firmly in response, enveloping it completely.
When they arrived at the airport, the driver moved to help Ye Jiayuan with her luggage, but she was quicker. “Thank you, I’ll handle it myself.”
Fu Chaoying caught on immediately and quickly said to the driver, “Could you wait for me? I’ll just walk Jiayuan-jie in.”
The driver smiled and agreed.
Once they were out of the driver’s sight, Fu Chaoying couldn’t hold back any longer. She gently tugged Ye Jiayuan’s hand. “Jiejie…”
Ye Jiayuan turned her head. Her deep eyes reflected Fu Chaoying’s face, yet her expression remained unreadable.
“Hmm?”
Fu Chaoying asked softly, “Will you… miss me?”
By the last two words, her voice had grown faint, tinged with inexplicable shyness.
She peeked up to gauge Ye Jiayuan’s reaction, but her expression remained as calm as still water. Then, in a low voice, Ye Jiayuan replied, “You’ll be there next week.”
Meaning—no, she wouldn’t miss her.
Ye Jiayuan was, of course, rational, able to separate romance from work.
Fu Chaoying pressed her lips together and didn’t press further, though a pang of disappointment flickered in her chest.
She quickly consoled herself: Ye Jiayuan had always been a rational person. She couldn’t expect her to change for her sake.
Just like last time, Fu Chaoying walked Ye Jiayuan to the security checkpoint. Before Ye Jiayuan could speak, Fu Chaoying stopped first. “Have a safe trip, jiejie.”
Her expression was neutral, her tone casual, as if she were merely bidding farewell to an ordinary friend.
Yet, a flicker of something indescribable passed through Ye Jiayuan’s eyes before she replied in a low voice, “Mm. See you in Hong Kong.”
Fu Chaoying gave her a faint smile, nodded, and waved her hand. “I’m off.”
She turned to leave, her steps light but unable to conceal the disappointment in her heart.
This time, Ye Jiayuan didn’t pull her back for a kiss. Fu Chaoying walked all the way to the parking lot and got into her car.
“Let’s go back,” she said calmly, only to suddenly hear her phone vibrate.
It was a message from Ye Jiayuan: [Let me know once you’ve confirmed the time.]
Typical of Ye Jiayuan’s businesslike manner.
Fu Chaoying stared at the message, a mix of emotions swirling inside her. In the end, she simply replied with a sticker.
For the next two days, their chat history was limited to morning and evening greetings.
On Tuesday afternoon, Fu Chaoying arrived at Dong Muyu’s company with her team as scheduled.
Dong Muyu’s gaze subtly swept over the bracelet on Fu Chaoying’s wrist, and she exhaled almost imperceptibly before sharing some good news with a smile: “We’ve secured investment from Xingye.”
Fu Chaoying smiled sincerely. “Congratulations.”
The meeting went smoothly, and Dong Muyu invited them to dinner at Nanyan Club.
The club manager, seeing Dong Muyu and Fu Chaoying arrive together with their teams, couldn’t hide his surprise. “Have the two of you reached a strategic partnership? Congratulations!”
Fu Chaoying gave a slight nod. “Thank you.”
Inside a private room, Fu Chaoying glanced out the window and spotted two familiar bare magnolia trees below. A sudden thought struck her, and she took a photo to send to Ye Jiayuan.
Ye Jiayuan didn’t reply.
Fu Chaoying was used to her busy schedule and didn’t expect an immediate response.
Dong Muyu was sociable and adept at breaking the ice, so the two teams quickly warmed up to each other.
After dinner, they moved to a quieter bar.
Fu Chaoying had a couple of drinks with Dong Muyu but was soon coaxed into having more.
She knew Dong Muyu meant no harm, but then she heard her ask casually, “Is that bracelet from Hayverly?”
Dong Muyu’s gaze lingered on her wrist, probing.
Fu Chaoying chuckled. “Did you see my cousin wearing a similar one?”
Dong Muyu shook her head. “We haven’t met these past few days. I saw it in her WeChat Moments.”
A flicker of interest crossed Fu Chaoying’s eyes. She immediately pulled up Fu Chaohua’s social media and found yesterday’s gym photo—her cousin in minimalist workout gear, the bracelet on her wrist unmistakable.
Understanding dawned on Fu Chaoying. “Jiayuan got them for us. They must be from Hayverly.”
A hint of something deeper flashed in Dong Muyu’s eyes. “So, President Ye gave them to both of you?”
Fu Chaoying nodded slightly. “Is there a problem?”
Dong Muyu smiled casually. “I remember this collection was designed for couples.”
A thought suddenly struck Fu Chaoying—had this pair of bracelets been intended as couple’s jewelry from the start?
But someone as rational as Ye Jiayuan… buying matching couple’s accessories?
Before she could make sense of it, her phone lit up with an incoming call—
The caller ID read: Jiayuan.
The ringing phone stood out sharply amidst the quiet murmurs in the bar, causing Fu Chaoying’s heart to skip a beat.
She took a deep breath to steady herself before walking to a relatively quiet corner and answering the call.
“Sis?”
“At Nanyan Club?” Ye Jiayuan’s voice came through the receiver, carrying a trace of barely noticeable fatigue.
“No, I moved to a quiet bar with Senior Dong and the others,” Fu Chaoying answered truthfully.
“Having fun?”
“It’s alright.” Fu Chaoying paused, then asked, “What about you? Busy?”
“Just finished.” Ye Jiayuan’s voice hesitated before she continued, “When are you coming home?”
“Not sure yet. Might be late.”
“Get some rest early.” Ye Jiayuan’s tone remained calm, betraying no emotion.
“Okay.” Fu Chaoying responded, but the call didn’t end.
Unable to resist, Fu Chaoying lowered her gaze to the bracelet on her wrist and tentatively asked, “Sis… do you miss me?”
