- Chapter 46: Jealousy
Who was the woman Ye Jiayuan mentioned?
Though she hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, Fu Chaoying’s overwhelming curiosity kept her rooted in place.
But Ye Jiayuan’s words revealed nothing more about the woman. Taking a deep breath, Fu Chaoying descended the stairs and met Ye Jiayuan’s gaze at the turn.
Ye Jiayuan’s expression was calm, as if nothing had happened. “The food will be here soon. Have some warm water first,” she said gently.
Fu Chaoying nodded slightly, passing her to sit on the sofa and pick up a glass of water.
Ye Jiayuan continued discussing work with Liu Xin, while Fu Chaoying turned on the TV and flipped to a random variety show.
When Ye Jiayuan finally hung up and sat beside her, she pulled Fu Chaoying into her arms as usual—only for Fu Chaoying to gracefully slip away. “It’s too hot in your arms.”
Her tone was casual, even slightly coquettish.
Ye Jiayuan didn’t insist, simply following her gaze to the screen.
The two chatted intermittently, Fu Chaoying’s tone casual as usual, though she didn’t seem particularly interested in the topics, only occasionally chiming in with a few words.
When the doorbell rang, Ye Jiayuan got up to answer it.
Fu Chaoying followed behind her and then sat down with her at the dining table.
As they ate dinner across from each other, Fu Chaoying occasionally complimented the food before casually asking, “Sister, can you take me to the conference tomorrow?”
Ye Jiayuan paused slightly, then looked up at her, a faint smile flickering in her eyes. “Are you interested in the theme of this summit?”
Fu Chaoying shook her head. “Not really. I just want to go with you.”
Then, in a voice so soft it seemed like it might shatter with the slightest breeze, she added, “I’m going back to Nanyan tomorrow night.”
Her tone carried just the right hint of reluctance.
Ye Jiayuan agreed without hesitation. “You’re a shareholder of Xingye—it’s perfectly reasonable.”
She hadn’t planned on attending the next day’s meeting, but this was the first time Fu Chaoying had actively made such a request, and she didn’t want to disappoint her.
Fu Chaoying smiled at her. “Great.”
As long as Ye Jiayuan attended tomorrow, someone would surely notice Fu Chaoying standing beside her.
A certain nightmare flashed through Fu Chaoying’s mind, and she took a couple of deep breaths before continuing to eat.
Ye Jiayuan glanced at her a few times. Though Fu Chaoying’s expression was calm, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
Dinner passed quickly, and Ye Jiayuan asked if she wanted to go for a walk.
Fu Chaoying nodded lightly. “I’m so full—it’ll help digest.”
And maybe clear her mind.
Ye Jiayuan called the housekeeper to clear the table while Fu Chaoying waited for her by the entrance.
Within seconds, Ye Jiayuan joined her and instinctively reached for her hand.
Fu Chaoying stiffened momentarily but ultimately didn’t pull away.
Nothing was conclusive yet. She still refused to believe Ye Jiayuan would cheat, but what other possibilities were there?
They went downstairs and walked toward the beach.
The temperature was just right, the sea breeze carrying a slight chill. Many people were strolling along the path.
Fu Chaoying let herself be led along, carefully scanning the surrounding shops until she spotted an ice cream chain. She gently squeezed Ye Jiayuan’s hand. “Sister, I want some.”
Ye Jiayuan followed her gaze and asked, “When’s your period usually?”
Fu Chaoying pressed her lips together. “It’s due in a couple of days. If I don’t eat it now, I’ll miss my chance.”
Ye Jiayuan suddenly tightened her grip. “But eating ice cream right before your period might trigger cramps.”
Fu Chaoying had primary dysmenorrhea—both families knew this. Cornered by Ye Jiayuan’s logic, she could only murmur, “It hurts even if I don’t eat it.”
“It’ll be worse.” Ye Jiayuan’s voice was firm.
Fu Chaoying pursed her lips and said nothing, tugging her toward another direction instead. But then, to her surprise, Ye Jiayuan gently squeezed her hand. “Fine, let’s get one.”
Fu Chaoying looked at her in confusion, only to meet her soft gaze. “You’ll be upset if we don’t, won’t you?”
“I’m not upset,” Fu Chaoying blinked innocently.
Ye Jiayuan chuckled helplessly and led her into the shop.
Standing in front of the ice cream display, they gazed at the colorful assortment behind the glass.
“What flavor do you want?”
Ye Jiayuan’s cool voice sounded beside her ear, and Fu Chaoying couldn’t resist acting spoiled, pointing lightly. “This one, this one, and this one—I want to try them all.”
After selecting three flavors in a row, Fu Chaoying thought Ye Jiayuan would ask her to choose just one. Instead, she heard her tell the staff directly, “One of each, please.”
Fu Chaoying blinked, gently squeezed her palm, and chuckled, “Thank you, President Ye.”
Ye Jiayuan turned to look at her, a barely perceptible smile in her eyes, then reached up to lightly stroke her hair.
The two staff members exchanged amused glances at their interaction, silently thinking, “We ship it!” and “When will sweet love like this come my way?”
Fu Chaoying got her three boxes of ice cream as wished, but Ye Jiayuan sternly instructed, “Just try a little of each.”
Holding the pistachio-flavored one, Fu Chaoying pretended innocence, “But it’d be wasteful not to finish them.”
Ye Jiayuan gave her a sidelong glance. “I have a solution to avoid waste.”
“Alright then.” Fu Chaoying blinked and took a few bites of each flavor before realizing what Ye Jiayuan meant—
Ye Jiayuan took the partially eaten ice cream from her and naturally finished the small box in a few bites.
Fu Chaoying was momentarily stunned, then slightly embarrassed. “Maybe…we should just throw it away?” She remembered Ye Jiayuan was health-conscious, disliking cold drinks and presumably ice cream.
Ye Jiayuan shook her head, saying simply, “I’m your girlfriend. You don’t need to feel embarrassed.”
Fu Chaoying pressed her lips together, her thoughts growing increasingly complicated.
They strolled to the seaside, then back home.
Fu Chaoying suddenly wished time could freeze in this moment, in this state.
She chuckled and shook her head—that same avoidance of truth was resurfacing. When she’d suspected Ye Yi’an of cheating, she’d gone through a similar period of denial, but eventually, the truth had found her.
What about this time?
They returned home, but Fu Chaoying no longer felt like using the toy in the nightstand.
Though Ye Jiayuan’s affection for her was far more evident than that unresolved truth, having something unsettled in her heart left her uneasy.
Curled on the sofa reading the book she hadn’t finished that afternoon, Fu Chaoying watched as Ye Jiayuan sat beside her reviewing documents.
At ten in the evening, Ye Jiayuan picked her up to go upstairs.
Instinctively wrapping her arms around Ye Jiayuan’s neck, Fu Chaoying gazed into her eyes, lost in thought.
Ye Jiayuan lowered her head to gently nuzzle the tip of her nose against hers. “Hmm?”
Her eyes were filled with tenderness and affection, but Fu Chaoying wasn’t sure if she was seeing it clearly.
Fu Chaoying tilted her head up and lightly kissed her lips, pulling away almost immediately.
They had only been intimate that evening, so Ye Jiayuan restrained herself from kissing her back.
Fu Chaoying looked up at her from within her embrace, the corners of her lips curling slightly. “Sister…”
Ye Jiayuan lowered her gaze to meet hers again, her expression calm. “Hmm?”
Fu Chaoying shook her head, then blinked, feigning innocence. “I just noticed you didn’t kiss me back.”
Ye Jiayuan pushed open the bedroom door, pressed her against it, and then leaned in close to her lips. “How about now? Do you want it?”
Fu Chaoying’s eyes curved into crescents. She took a couple of deep breaths before lightly poking her shoulder. “Let’s wash up and go to bed.”
Ye Jiayuan immediately set her down, and the two headed to the bathroom together to freshen up.
Once they lay down in bed, Fu Chaoying was suddenly pulled into her arms.
“Where’s my goodnight kiss?” Ye Jiayuan murmured, her fingers lightly tracing her waist.
Hearing the faint note of complaint in her voice, Fu Chaoying couldn’t help but chuckle. “I already kissed you when we were coming upstairs.”
No sooner had she spoken than Ye Jiayuan cupped her chin and pressed her lips to hers.
Fu Chaoying’s breath grew uneven from the intensity of the kiss. She pushed lightly at her shoulders, only to hear her low laugh. “This is my goodnight kiss for you.”
Fu Chaoying poked her chest. “Sister, you always have an excuse.”
Ye Jiayuan suddenly caught her restless hand. “Hmm, I just wanted to kiss you.”
Fu Chaoying smiled faintly and turned her back to her. “Goodnight, sister.”
Without warning, Ye Jiayuan pressed against her from behind, making Fu Chaoying’s heart race instantly. The thought of the little toy in the bedside drawer flashed through her mind.
She took a couple of deep breaths, and it took her a while to calm her heartbeat.
The next morning, Fu Chaoying and Ye Jiayuan went downstairs together.
Liu Xin was already waiting in the living room, waving a conference pass at Fu Chaoying. “Miss Chaoying, your pass is ready.”
Fu Chaoying stepped forward to take it. “Thanks for your hard work. The pass bore her name in traditional Chinese characters—Fu Chaoying—giving it a very formal impression.
Fu Chaoying slipped it into her pocket. After breakfast with Ye Jiayuan, they got into the car and headed to the summit.
She hung the pass around her neck but noticed Ye Jiayuan hadn’t done the same. Curious, she asked, ”Where’s yours?“
Ye Jiayuan replied, ”In my bag.“
Fu Chaoying gave a small nod, only to be abruptly pulled into her arms.
Ye Jiayuan didn’t do anything else—just toyed with the pass, her thumb brushing over the characters ”Fu Chaoying.“”
Fu Chaoying noticed the gesture, her heart fluttering. She instinctively looked up to study her expression, but Ye Jiayuan’s face remained as composed as ever, still carrying that cool, enigmatic air.
Yet her touch was so gentle and careful.
Fu Chaoying’s gaze darkened slightly, a complicated emotion welling up in her chest.
Before getting out of the car, Ye Jiayuan reminded her in a low voice, “Stay with me.”
Meaning, don’t wander off. Fu Chaoying’s eyes curved as she followed her out.
As they approached the venue entrance, a crowd surged toward them. Fu Chaoying stayed close to Ye Jiayuan, listening as she calmly introduced her to others—Fu Chaoying, a shareholder of Xingye.
Fu Chaoying’s heart stirred. For a fleeting moment, she wished she could hear her say, “This is my girlfriend, Fu Chaoying.”
But the current circumstances made that impossible.
She pressed her lips together, only to hear a familiar, bright voice call out, “Miss Fu, long time no see.”
It was Qu Jingyuan, Ye Jiayuan’s university classmate and a senior executive at Xingye Corporation.
Fu Chaoying curled her lips into a faint smile and gave her a slight nod. “President Qu, you’ve grown even more beautiful.”
Qu Jingyuan subtly glanced at the expressions of the two before responding with a polite compliment of her own.
Ye Jiayuan was speaking to someone else, but Fu Chaoying suddenly felt as if a gaze had settled on her from a distance.
Her brow twitched, and she sharply turned her head—only to spot a woman wearing a black face mask.
Even though the stranger only revealed the upper half of her face, Fu Chaoying recognized her instantly—she was the woman in the photo, the one sitting across from Liu Xin.
Fu Chaoying stiffened, but then she felt a light touch on her shoulder.
Ye Jiayuan’s voice pulled her back to reality—
“Yes, this is Old Master Fu’s youngest granddaughter.”
A gentle caress lingered on her shoulder. Fu Chaoying smiled faintly and followed Ye Jiayuan into the social gathering.
Ye Jiayuan exchanged only a few brief words with others before leaning in close to whisper in her ear, “What were you thinking about just now?”
Her warm breath sent an involuntary shiver through Fu Chaoying, but she replied, “I was thinking about you.”
Ye Jiayuan chuckled helplessly. “Let’s go in.”
The group finally entered the venue. Fu Chaoying didn’t know if that woman had followed them. Recalling the scene earlier, she realized—the woman didn’t have an attendee pass.
She couldn’t get in.
A wave of relief washed over Fu Chaoying, yet it was tinged with disappointment. She wanted to uncover the truth, and that woman was undoubtedly the key.
A day later, a seat beside Ye Jiayuan’s had seemingly materialized out of nowhere—reserved for Fu Chaoying.
Many cast curious glances her way, but Fu Chaoying ignored them, calmly flipping through the conference brochure instead.
This was a tech summit where numerous semi-finished technological products were showcased, naturally aiming to attract investors.
Ye Jiayuan was a frequent guest of honor at such events, often called upon to give commentary. Most of the time, she declined, but occasionally, she would take the microphone. When she spoke, her insights were substantial, as if she had an in-depth understanding of these fields.
Fu Chaoying tilted her head slightly to look at her profile, her heartbeat quickening naturally.
Then, unexpectedly, she met Ye Jiayuan’s eyes. Fu Chaoying blinked, catching what seemed like a flicker of amusement in her gaze.
“Enjoying the view?” Ye Jiayuan asked lightly.
Fu Chaoying gave a small nod. “Very much.”
A moment later, she felt Ye Jiayuan’s hand close over hers, followed by a gentle squeeze.
Fu Chaoying’s breath hitched, but she kept her expression neutral as she murmured, “Aren’t you afraid someone might notice?”
“Who would notice?” Ye Jiayuan’s tone was as calm as still water.
Fu Chaoying lightly traced her palm—a little trick they often used in public.
Suddenly, a voice came from her left: “Miss Fu, don’t you find this boring?”
It was Qu Jingyuan.
Fu Chaoying smoothly withdrew her hand and smiled. “Not at all. What Jiayuan was just talking about was quite interesting.”
Ye Jiayuan’s gaze shifted over, listening to their exchange.
Qu Jingyuan ignored her remark and looked past her at Ye Jiayuan. “Lunch together? I’ve already arranged to meet with President Nan from Meile.”
Ye Jiayuan didn’t glance at her, instead keeping her eyes on Fu Chaoying. “What would you like for lunch?”
Realizing she was being ignored, Qu Jingyuan withdrew her gaze, her expression darkening slightly.
Fu Chaoying caught her reaction from the corner of her eye before smiling at Ye Jiayuan. “If you’re having lunch with President Nan, would it be appropriate for me to join?”
Ye Jiayuan replied nonchalantly, “There’s no issue at all.”
With that settled, Qu Jingyuan didn’t waste any more words, only occasionally discussing work matters with Ye Jiayuan.
Fu Chaoying felt something in her heart soften, the corners of her lips curling slightly.
After the closing ceremony, the group exited the venue.
Fu Chaoying and Ye Jiayuan were among the first to leave. As they stepped out, Fu Chaoying instinctively glanced around but didn’t catch sight of that familiar figure.
An indescribable feeling settled in her chest as she averted her gaze.
Qu Jingyuan sent over the restaurant address, and Ye Jiayuan led Fu Chaoying into a car headed there.
“You don’t like Qu Jingyuan?” Ye Jiayuan remarked casually.
Fu Chaoying tilted her head to look at her and answered honestly, “I don’t have any prejudice against her, but sometimes the way she talks is just… odd. I only retaliate occasionally.”
Ye Jiayuan took her hand, a faint smile playing on her lips. “I thought you were jealous.”
Fu Chaoying pursed her lips, unable to resist a sarcastic jab. “With so many people around you, if I had to be jealous of each one, I’d be exhausted.”
In an instant, Ye Jiayuan pulled her into an embrace, tilting her chin up. “You have plenty around you too.”
Fu Chaoying pushed her hand away with a soft huff. “At least none of them have made it obvious they like me.”
But Qu Jingyuan was different—her affection was unmistakable.
Ye Jiayuan lightly tapped her nose. “I can smell the sourness already.”
Fu Chaoying didn’t respond, murmuring instead, “I’m a little tired.”
Then she heard Ye Jiayuan whisper by her ear, “There’s only you in my heart.”
Fu Chaoying took a deep breath, her voice muffled. “Who knows if you’re lying?”
“When have I ever lied to you?” Ye Jiayuan gently stroked her hair.
Fu Chaoying’s heart sank abruptly, and she stayed silent.
Ye Jiayuan wrapped an arm around her waist. “Hm?”
Fu Chaoying pressed her lips together before suddenly tugging at Ye Jiayuan’s shirt and lightly biting her collarbone.
Ye Jiayuan winced, chuckling helplessly. “I was wrong.”
“Where were you wrong?” Fu Chaoying lifted her gaze.
When Ye Jiayuan had no reply, Fu Chaoying curved her lips slightly and buried herself back into her embrace. “I really want to sleep for a bit.”
Her body shifted slightly, her tone carrying a hint of petulance.
Ye Jiayuan gently patted her back. “Mm, I’ll wake you when we arrive.”
When they reached the restaurant entrance, Fu Chaoying and Ye Jiayuan got out of the car and followed her into the private room.
Two people were already seated inside, and they immediately stood up upon seeing the two of them.
Qu Jingyuan had come with an unfamiliar woman. Ye Jiayuan gave a slight nod. “The last time I saw President Nan was in Singapore.”
President Nan flashed her a casual smile and exchanged a few pleasantries. “This must be Xingye’s new shareholder, Fu Chaoying?”
Fu Chaoying nodded lightly and shook her hand. “I’ve heard so much about you.”
President Nan chuckled. “Hello, hello. I know of you.”
After a brief exchange, Qu Jingyuan gestured for everyone to take their seats.
Fu Chaoying sat between Ye Jiayuan and Qu Jingyuan, listening to their small talk with President Nan.
Ye Jiayuan handed her the tablet. “Order.”
Fu Chaoying blinked at her. “Me? Does President Nan have any dietary restrictions?”
“Order whatever you like,” Ye Jiayuan said nonchalantly.
Fu Chaoying’s lips curved slightly, but in the end, she chose some safe dishes.
Qu Jingyuan was a skilled conversationalist, and it didn’t take long for President Nan to be thoroughly charmed before shifting her attention to Fu Chaoying and Ye Jiayuan.
“I remember your families have been close for generations?”
Ye Jiayuan nodded faintly. “Three generations back.”
“Does Xiao Fu have a partner? My daughter is still single.”
President Nan had likely heard about her past with Ye Yi’an, hence the question.
Just as Fu Chaoying was about to answer, Ye Jiayuan spoke in a low voice, “She’s about to.”
Fu Chaoying subtly glanced at Ye Jiayuan, only to hear President Nan cheerfully ask, “Oh? Has Director Ye already introduced someone?”
Fu Chaoying smiled faintly. “That’s right. Thank you for your concern, President Nan.”
Inwardly, Fu Chaoying thought: Ye Jiayuan just introduced herself to me.
The waiter arrived with the dishes, and after a toast, the conversation continued.
Fu Chaoying was focused on eating when President Nan casually remarked, “Forgive my bluntness, but does Director Ye currently have a partner?”
Fu Chaoying: ?
Ye Jiayuan glanced at Fu Chaoying imperceptibly before replying coolly, “Yes.”
President Nan looked disappointed but intrigued. “Really? When will you bring them out to meet us?”
Ye Jiayuan’s smile was faint. “You might have already met them.”
President Nan was momentarily stunned, scanning the table before laughing. “Oh my, I didn’t notice—have Director Qu and Director Ye gotten together?”
Fu Chaoying and Ye Jiayuan exchanged a subtle glance, catching Qu Jingyuan’s awkward expression out of the corner of their eyes.
The atmosphere turned awkward. President Nan was puzzled—she had already met Ye Jiayuan’s girlfriend? If not Qu Jingyuan, then who could it be?
Ye Jiayuan remained composed. “You’re joking, President Nan.”
President Nan waved her hand. “At my age, I tend to play matchmaker recklessly. I’ll punish myself with three drinks.”
Qu Jingyuan quickly stepped in to smooth things over.
As President Nan drank, she inadvertently noticed Fu Chaoying quietly eating and felt a strange suspicion.
Could it be Fu Chaoying? But hadn’t she dated Ye Jiayuan’s sister, Ye Yi’an, before?
Fu Chaoying caught her gaze and smiled. “President Nan has quite the tolerance.”
President Nan laughed and raised her glass to her.
Fu Chaoying picked up her wine glass and downed it in one go.
After that, Ye Jiayuan steered the conversation elsewhere.
Once Ye Jiayuan spoke, President Nan and Qu Jingyuan naturally shifted the topic to business.
Fu Chaoying wasn’t familiar with their project, so she naturally stayed silent, focusing on her meal when suddenly she received an unfamiliar text message—
[Ms. Fu, do you have time to meet? At 3 PM…]
