Pair A? No Thanks! [Transmigration] - Chapter 21
Su Wanxing was terrified.
She didn’t want her sister to know about this.
So, when Shi Ning looked at her, Su Wanxing nervously shook her head, her tears wobbling. She mouthed the words, “Don’t.”
Shi Ning turned around, her back to Su Wanxing, and walked to the balcony, saying in a loud voice: “It’s all good.” No one saw her hand gripping the railing tightly. “Nothing happened.”
Su Tianxue was a bit suspicious: “Really?”
Shi Ning smiled: “Really. What could possibly happen?”
Su Tianxue explained: “I don’t think Wanxing likes you very much. She has a childish temper, and you are—”
Shi Ning: “And I am what?”
Su Tianxue: “You know what your personality is, don’t you?”
Shi Ning: “So you already know what my personality is, huh?”
Su Tianxue heard the playful and ambiguous tone in Shi Ning’s voice and said calmly: “I’m good at understanding people. Is there a problem with that?”
Shi Ning shook her head: “No, whatever Ms. Su says is always right.”
Shi Ning heard someone on the other end of the phone urging Su Tianxue, so she said thoughtfully: “You should get to work. Don’t worry, I won’t be childish enough to take things seriously with your sister.”
Su Tianxue hummed in agreement: “Thanks.”
Shi Ning said casually: “When are you coming back today? Do you want me to pick you up?”
Su Tianxue’s lips were pursed: “No need.”
Shi Ning didn’t insist. She had a mess to clean up at home anyway, so she said: “Alright, I’ll hang up now.”
After the call ended, Su Tianxue stared at her phone, feeling a bit strange. According to Shi Ning’s usual personality, she should have been flirting right now, maybe even asking for a kiss or two. Why did she just hang up?
A graduate student asked curiously: “Senior, who were you on the phone with?”
“No one, just family,” Su Tianxue said, opening her locker and putting her phone away. She took off her jacket, ready to change, and asked as she did so: “By the way, did you print out the papers on sundial high temperatures and heating needles that I asked you to collect?”
The graduate student nodded repeatedly: “Yes, yes, senior, I’ll give them to you after the meeting.”
“Good, thanks for the hard work.”
Su Tianxue put on her white lab coat. The white robe made her look even colder.
Su Tianxue put on her work badge, which clearly read, Chief Researcher.
She turned and entered the meeting hall, her steps firm and her posture confident.
At the old Su family house, Shi Ning hung up the phone. She looked at Jiang Ningran, who was still tied up and unconscious, then at Su Wanxing, who was deep in self-blame. For a moment, the scene felt very familiar.
As a legal aid worker, she had handled many cases of sexual assault, date rape, and sexual harassment. Some female prisoners were in jail because of excessive self-defense during marital rape, which led to them killing their husbands. They were sentenced to death and went to prison. She had also dealt with cases where young girls committed suicide after being assaulted, and their parents couldn’t accept it. They wanted to sue the perpetrator but couldn’t because the victim was gone and there was no evidence. They could only cry every day.
Shi Ning’s job as a legal aid worker was to fight for their rights.
From a fair and just perspective, she shouldn’t favor either Su Wanxing or Jiang Ningran. But from a personal perspective, her goodwill towards Su Wanxing was greater than towards Jiang Ningran.
Besides, Su Wanxing was Su Tianxue’s sister.
Being protective of her own was one of Shi Ning’s few good qualities.
What’s more, she wasn’t a lawyer confronting someone in court right now. Her identity was just Su Wanxing’s sister’s… well, wife.
Shi Ning walked over to Su Wanxing, squatted down, and looked at the little crybaby: “Why do you cry so much?”
Su Wanxing sobbed: “I, I have tears, I don’t want to either.”
Shi Ning sighed: “The floor is cold; you should sit on the sofa first. I’ll warm up some milk for you. It’ll help you calm down.”
Su Wanxing was confused: “How do you know that drinking milk will calm me down?”
Shi Ning: The book said so.
“I guessed.” Shi Ning asked, “Do you want some?”
She was a bit tired from crying and a little dehydrated. Su Wanxing nodded obediently, then became cautious again: “You’re not going to put anything in the milk, are you?”
Shi Ning wanted to laugh at Su Wanxing’s innocence and naivety.
“Why do you ask me that question?”
Su Wanxing pursed her lips, too embarrassed to answer because after she woke up, she saw the “future,” and she always felt that even though Shi Ning was very good-looking, she was also very bad, like one of those beautiful women who would randomly abduct girls on the street.
She couldn’t answer, and she felt her question had been a bit offensive, so she apologized softly: “I’m sorry.”
Shi Ning opened the refrigerator, found the opened carton of skim milk, poured it into a mug, and then put the mug with Su Wanxing’s name on it into the microwave to heat. She got a bit distracted, thinking that she should have Su Tianxue write her name on a mug one day too. She recognized the handwriting on this mug as Su Tianxue’s.
The air was quiet for a while, and the silence became a fourth person in the room.
Until the microwave beeped, she took out the mug with an oven mitt and placed it on the coffee table in front of Su Wanxing: “It’s a bit hot; wait a bit.”
Su Wanxing secretly glanced at Shi Ning, reflecting on whether she should judge a person based on the so-called “future” she had seen. Shi Ning didn’t seem that bad. She was quite gentle and even protected her. It’s just… she was a bit ruthless when she hit people, like the useless hooligans Su Wanxing had seen as a child.
However, the content she saw told her that Shi Ning was a CEO with a good upbringing and shouldn’t have been a hooligan. Or was fighting also a necessary skill for CEOs?
Noticing Su Wanxing’s gaze, Shi Ning smiled and sat down cross-legged on the floor. She reached out and touched the mug, testing the temperature: “It’s not hot anymore.”
“What?”
“The milk.”
“Oh.” Su Wanxing realized. She held the milk and drank it, thinking how amazing Shi Ning was. She was just like her sister; when she heated the milk, she also added a spoonful of honey.
Seeing that Su Wanxing’s mood had stabilized a bit, Shi Ning began to guide her: “Do you remember your question from earlier?”
Su Wanxing blinked: “What?”
Shi Ning: “You asked me if I would drug the milk.”
Su Wanxing quickly apologized again: “I’m sorry, Sister Shi, I just… I was overthinking it, I’m sorry.”
Shi Ning shook her head: “No, it’s good that you think that way. You’re an Omega. You can’t help it; society requires you to be alert when you’re out. And you don’t like me anyway, so it’s normal to be suspicious of me.”
Su Wanxing pursed her lips, wanting to explain: “I don’t not like you.”
Shi Ning: “It’s okay whether you like me or not, we both know the score. This doesn’t affect what I’m about to say.”
Shi Ning rested her right elbow on the coffee table, her chin propped on her wrist. She held her face and looked at Su Wanxing, asking lightly: “Su Wanxing, I’m very curious. Why could you ask me that, but you couldn’t ask Jiang Ningran?”
Su Wanxing’s hand holding the milk paused. She blinked blankly: “Sister Shi, what do you mean?”
