Phoenix Girl in the 1990s - Chapter 6
Chapter 6
After all, Li Guanghai is a young man, with the determination of a defiant youth who will not succumb to losing.
Although he can understand the concerns of his mother, he still wants to put up a fight.
As long as the other party is willing to pay for reparations, even if he is really beaten up, it’s not a big deal.
His father’s been hospitalized for several days and has spent more than 10,000 yuan.
They’ll have to continue to spend even their saved up money, and that’ll be the worst thing that could happen to the family.
And he’s deeply in debt. The whole weight is resting on him alone.
He might not be capable of paying it off in just 8 or 10 years. He was a young man in his early 20s, why would he be willing to live that sort of existence?
Xia Zhimin is still very pleased that Li Guanghai has come into realization, given the fact that he has also proposed to go to the police station with his nephew.
It was getting late, so the two of them hurried to the police station
A police officer, who looked amiable enough, took their statements.
“When did this incident happen? They haven’t offered a work around in the midst of it have they?”
Li Guanghai nodded, “Yes, not only were they not being responsible, they also beat me up when I came to them to seek compensation.”
After saying that, Li Guanghai revealed his injured arm again.
The officer saw it and clicked his tongue, and scribbled in his notebook another line.
After the police officer had finished his report, he returned Li Guofu’s case to Li Guanghai and capped the pen and said.
“OK, we’ve already understood this matter, the construction site of theirs just happens to be under the jurisdiction of our police department, I’ll go over to look into the situation in the afternoon, and I’ll visit you guys at the hospital when I have the results.”
The gentle attitude of the police officer’s made Xia Zhimin and Li Guanghai’s concerns reduced by half, and it was already dinner time.
Li Guanghai has been in the city for a while, he knows a little bit about the city’s people.
He offered to buy the Police Officer a meal, but the other party politely declined.
“We don’t require any special treatment. We’re just doing our job by the book. We can’t use the people’s resources, you guys go back and wait for news okay, in case there is anything happening we’ll visit you guys.”
“Sir, I’m counting on you. My dad’s in a really critical condition. I’m not talking about some kind of monetary settlement, but at least give us the compensation for the medical expenses. We are just poor farmers and life is really not easy.”
The police officer nodded his head, “I understand your feelings very well, after all, I am also a farmer’s son.”
After reassuring them again, the police escorted them out of the police precinct.
On the way back to the hospital from the police precinct, Xia Zhimin told Li Guanghai about Li Xiuqin’s incident.
Li Guanghai furiously punched his fist on the utility pole on the side of the road.
“It’s all my fault, I shouldn’t have talked to Auntie about borrowing money.”
Li Guanghai was really guilty, if his aunt really had an unexpected death because of the matter of borrowing money.
He’s probably not going to be able to sleep comfortably for the rest of his life.
Xia Zhimin sighed and patted Li Guanghai’s back and said.
“That’s life. Fortunately, nothing terrible happened. It’s all right. Let’s just get on with our lives. All this suffering shall not be in vain.”
As for his brother-in-law lying in the hospital, Xia Zhimin is also hoping for a miracle to happen for him to get better.
No amount of monetary compensation is as important as having a healthy body.
Xia Zhimin and Li Guanghai went back to the hospital cafeteria to eat.
Xia Zhimin can’t wait for the police department’s investigation. He’ll go back to the county first.
He told Li Guanghai to call the village committee if there is any situation.
Li Xiuqin was discharged from the hospital after three days of monitoring, in addition to having no appetite.
Other than nausea after eating meat, no other symptoms have been detected for the current time.
When she returned to her village, many of her neighbors came to see her and urged her to be more positive.
Half her life has already passed, and she should not get worked up over Liu Chunping’s irrelevant words.
“What’s wrong with having a daughter? It’s a blessing to have a daughter. Take Zhang Dagan’s family in the neighboring village. They have six daughters. What’s the worst thing that can happen to me? Some of their daughters got married, and they come back to see their mothers from time to time with gifts. And his son-in-law is so dutiful, he works hard as soon as he arrives. Now Zhang Dagan and his wife don’t even have to work in the fields every year. Just cooking at home and a couple of sons-in-law keeping the field in order.”
A Village Neighbor gave encouraging words to Li Xiquin.
Another also said, “No, when your daughters are older, keep one of them in front of you to find a son-in-law, it’s no worse than having a son.”
Li Xiuqin listened to everyone’s words of counseling
Knowing that everyone is saying all this for her own good, she is still quite grateful and smiles.
“Thank you for coming to see me, but there’s no need for you to encourage me, I’ve been thinking things over for the past few days and I’ll never be foolish again.”
Is it not foolish to take one’s own life for a few words of an unworthy person?
Everyone looked at Li Xiuqin’s expression, her eyes wide at ease, she really didn’t look like she had any worries, so they felt relieved.
“It’s good to get over it. Look how nice your daughters are. Since they’ve been here for a while, they have brought them chairs and tea and food, so they’re so sweet that they’d love to trade them with the boys at home.”
Li Xiuqin followed her neighbor’s words and looked out the window. In the yard, her eldest daughter was mixing chicken food and feeding the chickens.
The second daughter helps her husband with carpentry and the third daughter is busy in the kitchen.
Her youngest daughter is sitting under the roof with a small bench, gathering vegetables.
The daughters, though plainly dressed, acted graciously.
Each one of them is full of vitality like spring flower buds, so that people can’t help but raise the corners of their mouths when they look at them.
A heartfelt smile appeared.
“Yeah, if it wasn’t for them this time, I’d be truly lost, and I’ve got to do well for the sake of these kids.”
A mother’s child is a treasure, an orphaned child is like grass.
She could no longer leave these precious daughters behind and must see that they lived happily ever after.
Li Xiuqin’s stomach and bowels were injured and she couldn’t afford to eat anything greasy, so Xia Qing made her a red dates and yam congee to support her stomach.
The jujubes were a gift from someone who visited her, and the yams were wild yams from the back of the mountain.
Xia Qing and Xia Wen when they went to the foot of the mountain to collect firewood saw it, and dug it with a shovel and brought it back.
Xia Qing is still quite happy with this world, she stayed in the capital after graduating from university.
Although the income is quite high, it is very stressful to be living back from her home, and now her life is as casual as a rural paradise for her.
“The congee cooked by Xiao Qing now tastes better than before. The porridge is thick, light and not greasy.”
