Pry Away Step-Sister's Fiancee - Chapter 1
Chapter 1: The Embarrassment With Nowhere to Hide
Su Yu had been cutting wheat all morning. Beads of sweat occasionally dripped from her clear, fair face, soaking through her faded school uniform and clinging to her waist and abdomen, revealing her slender silhouette.
Under the locust tree by the riverbank, several farmers sat cross-legged resting. Seeing Su Yu still working, they called out loudly, “Hey, kid, come have some water.”
Su Yu took out a handkerchief to wipe the sweat from her neck, then quietly found some shade to sit under. From her canvas bag, she took out a thick stack of college entrance exam practice papers. She bent one leg and placed the papers on her knee.
To save time, she didn’t go home for lunch. She nibbled on the rice ball she had brought with her, but perhaps due to the hot weather and the ball being sealed inside the cloth bag too long, it had turned sour.
“Kid, eat some meat!” Another man opened his lunchbox and held out some braised pork to Su Yu.
She thanked him but didn’t reach out to take any, keeping her eyes fixed on the problems in front of her.
The man knew her personality well and didn’t push further, smiling as he withdrew his hand. “I didn’t expect a delicate girl like you to be so capable. You’ve cut three rows of wheat this whole morning—really impressive!”
Su Yu was reserved by nature, her delicate brows always carrying a hint of melancholy. Upon hearing the praise, she showed little expression and let out a muffled “Hmm” in response.
The man picked up his bowl and ate, chatting casually: “Ah Yu, my third child says you topped the city again in this exam, and your score’s way higher than second place. You’re graduating this fall, right? Have you decided which university to apply to?”
“I want to go to Bincheng,” Su Yu said, showing rare joy appropriate for her age when talking about studies.
“Bincheng’s an international city, you’ll see a lot of the world there,” the man said happily. His simple face was filled with genuine warmth, but then his smile faded slightly. “Although you’re a top student, always winning scholarships, studying in Bincheng means considerable tuition and living expenses. Your grandmother’s often ill, and your little sister attends a special school. Can your family really afford it?”
Upon hearing this, Su Yu stopped writing and her eyes darkened with a trace of sadness.
The man, who was from the same village and had watched her grow up, spoke without much hesitation: “If only you could have turned into an Alpha. I heard Bincheng’s Alpha girls’ school doesn’t charge tuition and even offers living subsidies.”
“Exactly!” A man in a sleeveless vest nearby chimed in mockingly, “I mean, Su Yu, you’re already eighteen—how come you haven’t ‘differentiated’ yet? Normally, this shouldn’t happen. Your mother’s an Omega, and kids born from Omegas usually have good genes. How come you’re not differentiating?”
Another man with a scar on his face joked, “Su Yu’s mom is an Omega, but her dad is just a Beta…”
“Bah, everyone knows her mom came here already pregnant, so who her real dad is, everyone knows,”
The sleeveless man laughed, but when he caught Su Yu’s icy, piercing gaze, he immediately fell silent.
Though she was just a newly eighteen-year-old high school girl, Su Yu radiated a sharp and intimidating aura.
The sleeveless man was instantly speechless.
Though young, Su Yu was clever and handy. When the village’s only threshing machine broke down, she fixed it by following the manual.
The machine belonged to the village committee and was shared among families in rotation. Once it broke, they had to rely on Su Yu for repairs.
The villagers had a certain respect tinged with fear for this bookish girl.
After finishing lunch, the men tidied up and prepared to resume work.
Su Yu packed away her test papers and neatly folded her towel, hanging it on a branch. Just as she turned to leave, she suddenly saw a small figure running along the field ridge, signing rapidly with her hands, catching the attention of the men.
The sleeveless man, not understanding sign language, shouted irritably at the girl, “Hey, mute! What are you waving your hands about?”
Noticing Su Yu raising an eyebrow and looking over, he hastily changed his tone, “Fang Shuhui, what’s wrong? You look so anxious.”
Fang Shuhui was Su Yu’s half-sister on their mother’s side. When she was five, she suffered a serious illness that wasn’t treated in time, and as a result, lost her hearing. The villagers considered her a bad omen and avoided her like poison. Fang Shuhui felt very insecure, but luckily Su Yu never rejected her and patiently communicated with her in sign language.
Su Yu focused on Fang Shuhui’s hand movements, and a faint sparkle of joy appeared in her long, almond-shaped eyes.
“Really? She’s coming? Where?”
Fang Shuhui nodded vigorously, then signed “at home.”
“Let’s go home.”
Su Yu was rarely so happy because an honored guest had come to her home — the benevolent sponsor helping her attend school.
This benefactor, according to the homeroom teacher who connected them, was a businesswoman from Bincheng whom Su Yu had never met in person. They had only spoken by phone a few times. She had told Su Yu to call her “Madam Ni.”
Last week, Madam Ni called, saying she would bring her daughter to experience rural life and asked if they could stay at Su Yu’s house for a while.
Su Yu naturally would not refuse such a kind request. She tidied up her house in advance, freed up a room, and waited for their arrival.
Holding her sister’s hand, Su Yu ran along, stopping to pick a bright bouquet of daisies blooming along the ridge.
The mountain path was slippery and uneven. Before reaching the village entrance, they saw a white SUV parked in front of their dilapidated brick house. Villagers gathered around curiously inspecting the “little gold man” emblem on the car.
From the crowd emerged a woman with an extraordinary aura. She wore simple clothes—a light gray shirt paired with a black long skirt. The outfit was minimalist in color blocks, yet no one could ignore her striking, high-class, exotic face.
The woman glanced at Su Yu, smiled broadly, and greeted her, “You must be Su Yu, right?”
Meeting her benefactor for the first time, Su Yu didn’t know how to express her feelings.
It was probably not just gratitude, but a subtle sense of being overwhelmed. Suppressed emotions surged, causing her face to flush red and her body to stiffen like a block of wood.
Local officials followed closely, and the village head nudged her from behind, “What are you standing there like a fool for? Call her ‘auntie’!”
Su Yu opened her mouth but was unused to addressing her benefactor so familiarly on the first meeting.
After hesitating a moment, she awkwardly stepped forward and shyly handed the bouquet to the woman, softly saying, “Madam Ni.”
The woman accepted the flowers, smiled, and said thanks. Just as she was about to ask about Su Yu’s studies, a sweet, clear laugh sounded from behind.
The laugh grew finer and softer, like pulling strands of maltose candy, lingering stickily in the heart.
Instinctively, Su Yu turned her head toward the source of the sound.
The SUV door slid open, and a girl in a sexy camisole dress slowly stepped down. Large sunglasses covered most of her face, revealing only cherry-red lips that looked like moist roses, glossy and full.
A beam of light filtered through the rearview mirror, wrapping around her body. Her skin looked even more translucent and lustrous than raw jade.
At that moment, Su Yu finally understood that “white to the point of glowing” was not an exaggeration, but a vivid reality.
The girl walked over at a leisurely pace. Her soft waist swayed the hem of her dress, which fluttered like waves, and when she waved her hand, glimpses of spring light hinted through.
Su Yu nervously shifted her gaze down, landing on the girl’s round, fair toes.
Each was as white as fine jade, painted with a pretty cherry color.
Looking down at her own feet in worn cloth shoes with holes, Su Yu quietly curled her toes inward.
She wanted to hide them.
Su Yu never felt ashamed of her poor family background, but for some reason, the sight of her bare toes made her unbearably embarrassed.
She lightly lifted her foot, thinking that if she made no noise, no one would notice. But when she looked up, she just caught the faint upward curve of the girl’s lips.
She had been caught.
Heat flamed behind Su Yu’s ears, the blush spreading down her neck.
