Chapter 8: Saving Little White Flower in Workplace (8)
The interview started at nine.
When Shen Qingwei arrived, the area outside the interview room was already filled with people in suits, holding their resumes.
She thought she’d arrived early, but these candidates were even earlier. Glancing at the dense work experience listed on one person’s resume, her heart couldn’t help but tighten with nerves.
Could she really compete with such impressive people for this position?
For a moment, Shen Qingwei felt like backing out.
She secretly pulled out her phone, looking at two recent text messages from smaller companies she’d applied to last night, both offering interview invitations.
With her credentials, those smaller companies were well within her reach. If she skipped today’s interview, she could still make it to one of them.
She glanced at the crowd of candidates waiting outside, clutched her resume in its folder, and quietly turned to head back the way she came, slipping into the stairwell.
She didn’t have the courage to take the elevator, afraid of running into someone from the Zhao Group. The stairwell felt safer for her escape.
Clattering down several floors, her legs grew weak. Finally, the emergency exit door appeared in front of her.
Letting out a sigh of relief, she stepped forward and pushed it open.
Before she could catch her breath, she looked up and froze. A familiar figure stood before her.
Someone whose posture and aura she could recognize from ten streets away—Zhao Xingyue.
The owner of this company.
Thinking of Zhao Xingyue’s invitation and her own cowardly retreat, Shen Qingwei considered saying hello but, after hesitating, decided to leave.
She was so busy—she probably wouldn’t know Shen Qingwei had applied to Zhao’s.
But just as she was about to slip away, the woman staring at the elevator panel turned her head and called out her name precisely. “Shen Qingwei?”
Shen Qingwei instinctively straightened up. “Here!”
She saw the woman smile lightly and ask, “Here for an interview?”
Though she’d come for the interview, her lack of confidence had driven her to flee. The truth lingered on her tongue but was swallowed without hesitation. “Um, I got up a bit late, just arrived.”
She couldn’t explain why, but in front of Zhao Xingyue, she felt so timid.
Maybe because Zhao Xingyue had seen her at her most pathetic.
Of course, Zhao Xingyue knew why Shen Qingwei was here at this moment—it was why she was here too.
Zhao Xingyue glanced at her watch. “The interview starts at nine. It’s only eight-thirty now—you’re not late, you’re right on time.” She nodded toward a direction. “This is my private elevator; it doesn’t stop at the interview floor. The regular elevators are over there. Take one and go to the floor in your text message.”
Shen Qingwei forced a grateful smile, as if she really couldn’t find the right elevator. “Thank you.”
She hurried over and pressed the up button. At the same time, Zhao Xingyue’s elevator dinged, and the doors opened.
Zhao Xingyue glanced at Shen Qingwei, who was pretending to wait anxiously outside the elevator, and stepped inside. Two seconds later, she stepped back out.
“Oh, this is for you.” She handed Shen Qingwei a hot cocoa she’d just bought. Smiling slightly, she said, “Good luck with your interview. Welcome to the Zhao Group.”
Shen Qingwei, holding the hot cocoa personally given by the president, stammered, “…Th-Thank you.”
Watching Zhao Xingyue’s figure slowly disappear into the elevator, Shen Qingwei thought she finally understood why so many Zhao Group employees online said they’d lay down their lives for this woman—she would too!
She was one hundred percent willing!
She wanted to kneel and cry, calling her “boss”!
How could there be such a kind boss in the world… If she failed this interview, she’d deserve to slap herself twice.
You’d let down Zhao Xingyue’s expectations!
The sweet hot cocoa calmed Shen Qingwei’s nerves. She tucked the empty cup into her bag and walked into the interview room with determination.
“Good morning, interviewers. I’m Shen Qingwei…”
The president’s office was on the top floor. As Zhao Xingyue stepped out of the elevator, her secretary, holding a stack of documents, greeted her.
“President Zhao, your coffee is ready. These are today’s documents. Please take a look.”
Zhao Xingyue took them with a soft “mm.”
As if her sudden trip downstairs was just a casual stroll.
What she didn’t know was that her purchase of a hot cocoa spread through the company in less than half a day.
“The boss bought a hot cocoa downstairs, seven sugars. Does she really like it that sweet?”
“Wow, she’s so serious usually, but secretly loves sweets? That’s so charming.”
“Such a contrast!”
In Zhao Xingyue’s fan club group chat, the topic of her liking sweets sparked lively discussion.
It started with the seven-sugar hot cocoa and spiraled into how many girly details were in her daily outfits. The fans—male and female—grew more excited as they chatted.
A young, beautiful, and capable female CEO always drew attention effortlessly. Many at Zhao’s were her fans, even forming a fan club group, obsessively tracking her every move.
The group was nearly as big as the entire company’s staff. A message posted there was as good as known by the whole company.
As the discussion heated up, an account with an admin tag spoke up. “But when the boss got off the elevator, she wasn’t holding a drink.”
“Maybe she was too embarrassed to bring it back and drank it secretly?”
“If she was embarrassed, would she buy it herself? She’d have Min-jie buy it. Did she finish it on the way?”
“Possible. Wow, does the boss love sweets that much? Min-jie, you make her black coffee every day lol. Poor boss, maintaining that serious image must be tough. I feel for her.”
The group buzzed with theories when a lurker popped up.
“Um… um… don’t hate me for saying this.”
“I was heading to work and saw the boss get on the elevator. She seemed to give her hot cocoa to a girl.”
“They were talking and laughing…”
The message caused a brief silence before the group exploded.
“Talking and laughing?! Who?! Who dared steal the boss’s smile?! Her smile belongs to me!”
“Which little hussy drank the boss’s hot cocoa? Come clean, leniency for honesty, punishment for resistance!”
“Li Sisi, was it you?! You’re always hovering around the boss. And you, Zhou Xiaohong, you’re a prime suspect too…”
Oblivious to the frenzy in the staff’s phones just a wall away, Zhao Xingyue, focused on her task target and company, was watching Shen Qingwei’s interview.
With her instructions, the interviewers initially went easy, unlike with others who turned pale after a few questions.
But as Shen Qingwei’s abilities shone through, their questions grew tougher.
Zhao Xingyue noticed Shen Qingwei becoming more at ease during the interview.
At first, she only sat after being told to, so tense she seemed ready to snap like a ruler. But as questions deepened into her field of expertise, she relaxed, her smile became natural, and she gestured while explaining. The interview flowed smoothly, with the interviewers nodding more frequently.
They were genuinely impressed, thinking, as expected, someone personally endorsed by the president was different.
“Welcome, Miss Shen, to the Zhao Group. We look forward to working with you.”
She passed?
On the spot?
Shen Qingwei was stunned for several seconds before it hit her—she passed! She passed Zhao’s interview and got the job!
Her heart wanted to leap and scream, but her expression remained composed, her eyes joyful yet not arrogant, earning even more approval from the interviewers.
Leaving the interview room, Shen Qingwei quickly followed the floor directory to the women’s restroom.
She locked the door.
“Ah—”
“Ahhh—”
“Ahhhhhh—”
Flush—
The sound of a toilet flushing came from the next stall.
Shen Qingwei quickly covered her mouth, her eyes curving into beautiful crescents.
Leaning against the door, she clenched her fist and gave herself a cheering gesture.
Shen Qingwei, you’re the best! Super-duper lollipop awesome!
Zhao Xingyue’s fan club group—
“Which lunatic was screaming in the seventh-floor restroom? Scared the crap out of me, literally.”
“+1, I heard it too.”
“+10086, I heard it from the hallway.”
After completing onboarding at HR, it was lunchtime. As a new employee, she could start work tomorrow.
Swinging her bag, Shen Qingwei happily headed out of Zhao’s. Passing the coffee shop in the lobby, she glanced at the prices and was speechless.
So expensive…
She knew boxed coffee was pricey, but not that pricey.
Back in school, the most expensive drink she’d had was an eight-yuan bubble tea, which made her heart ache all afternoon.
But thinking of the free drink Zhao Xingyue had given her, her heart bubbled with joy again.
As she left Zhao’s, about to treat herself to a cab to the subway, she spotted a familiar car pulling up from the underground garage.
Recognizing whose car it was, she clattered over in her heels, waving both hands.
The black sedan stopped in front of her, and the window rolled down, revealing a face with sunglasses.
Zhao Xingyue removed her sunglasses. “What’s up?”
Suppressing her excitement, Shen Qingwei said, “President Zhao, I passed! I passed the interview! From today, I’m a Zhao Group employee!”
“You passed? Congrats.”
Zhao Xingyue’s tone was cool, like a bucket of cold water on Shen Qingwei’s enthusiasm. She realized she might be overreacting.
Zhao Xingyue asked, “Anything else?”
“N-No.” Shen Qingwei shook her head, her excitement fading, a shy blush spreading across her fair face.
“You’re busy, President Zhao—”
“If there’s nothing else, get in,” Zhao Xingyue said. Shen Qingwei looked up in disbelief at the woman’s smiling face. “You passed, right? Come on, I’ll treat you to lunch to celebrate.”
