Chapter 10: The Senior Who Went Abroad (10)
Shen Yunzhou and the village chief sat for a while in a roadside convenience store. Meanwhile, Lin Qingchi returned to the car to make a phone call. When she came back, she told them, “The matter has been resolved. There’s no need to relocate the grave.”
Shen Yunzhou finally breathed a sigh of relief.
The village chief, still in disbelief, asked, “Really? No relocation? I tried everything to convince them, but they wouldn’t budge. It’s really resolved?”
“Resolved,” Lin Qingchi reassured. “For the next ten or twenty years, no one will dare to touch that piece of land. Don’t worry.”
The village chief gasped.
She wanted to question how Lin Qingchi could be so sure, but before she could, her eyes fell on the car parked outside. Upon closer inspection, she realized the badge was from Maybach.
…Even though their area had been developed into a tourist destination, the roads weren’t fully paved. For such an expensive car to drive here, this was definitely someone formidable!
Swallowing her words, the village chief watched as Lin Qingchi opened a bottle of water and handed it to Shen Yunzhou. She thought to herself that his suffering days must finally be over.
Shen Yunzhou’s parents had died in an accident on the mountain when he was only a year old. From then on, he was raised by his grandmother.
But his grandmother, being old and frail, could hardly do much work.
Growing up poor, Shen Yunzhou matured early. He could handle farm work, collect discarded bottles to sell, and help others plant rice or carry potatoes. People, seeing his plight, would often pay him double, a twenty-yuan job for ten yuan’s worth of labor.
He never complained or cried about his hardships.
Shen Yunzhou earned all his tuition fees himself.
When he was admitted to Jinghua University, the entire village rejoiced. Though the villagers wanted to pool some money for his tuition, he refused to take a single cent.
After moving to the capital, Shen Yunzhou sent money back home every month, entrusting the village chief to give it to his grandmother. The amount varied, but not a single month went by without it.
After graduating, he returned to the village and promised to bring his grandmother to the capital within two years. Yet, just a year later, his grandmother was taken away by a group of people, and never came back.
Everyone else assumed Shen Yunzhou had brought his grandmother to the capital to live a comfortable life. Only the village chief knew better. She had tried calling Shen Yunzhou back then, but he never picked up, not even once in those years.
Months ago, when Shen Yunzhou returned holding an urn, the village chief was stunned.
After burying his grandmother, Shen Yunzhou stayed in the village for only three days before leaving.
The village chief, with her years of experience, could tell something was deeply wrong with him. But she didn’t ask, she didn’t want to reopen his wounds.
Seeing Lin Qingchi with him today, poised and considerate, reassured the village chief. She became even more hospitable toward them.
When they left, the car’s trunk was packed with cured meats and local specialties the village chief had given them. She even tried to squeeze in two ducks, which Shen Yunzhou firmly stopped.
As they drove onto the highway, Shen Yunzhou noticed a small piece of duck feather stuck in Lin Qingchi’s hair. Unable to hold back, he burst out laughing.
Lin Qingchi had noticed it long ago but decided to leave it there, thinking it might amuse him, and it did.
Back at Zijinyuan, Lin Qingchi went upstairs, showered, and collapsed onto the bed, falling asleep instantly.
The twenty-hour round trip was exhausting, and if it hadn’t been for 005’s assistance, it might have been too much.
Shen Yunzhou had napped in the car earlier. Looking at Lin Qingchi now, deeply asleep, he wanted to scold her for risking their lives with such fatigued driving. But when he opened his mouth, all that came out was a soft, “Thank you.”
Thank you for accompanying me back.
Thank you for taking me away.
Shen Yunzhou was deeply afraid of facing the village chief and the other villagers. He couldn’t bring himself to tell them that his grandmother had died in a nursing home.
He felt unfilial.
He could never forgive himself.
From that point on, no one disturbed Lin Qingchi and Shen Yunzhou for a long time.
Shen Yunzhou terminated his apartment lease and moved into Lin Qingchi’s home. Though he didn’t have much luggage, Lin Qingchi still merged the bedroom with the adjacent room to create a walk-in closet.
Every morning, Lin Qingchi drove Shen Yunzhou to work. At noon, Shen Yunzhou would come to the Lin Corporation to have lunch with her.
In the evenings, Lin Qingchi would pick him up after work. On the drive home, they’d discuss dinner plans, shop for groceries together, and fall asleep in each other’s arms at night.
One day, Shen Yunzhou asked Lin Qingchi, “What exactly is our relationship now?”
Lin Qingchi decisively dragged him to bed and answered, “The kind where I’ll sleep with you for a lifetime.”
Shen Yunzhou Called Her Shameless.
If it hadn’t been for Jiang Zhou showing up, Shen Yunzhou might have stayed immersed in his dreamlike reverie.
—-
“Sit down. What do you need from me?”
It was the same café as before, but this time, Fang Qiong wasn’t there. Sitting across from Shen Yunzhou was only Jiang Zhou, his face grim.
“You really didn’t take that twenty million?” Jiang Zhou asked. “Not a single cent?”
Shen Yunzhou chuckled. “You know, I’ve realized something. You and Fang Qiong are quite a match, you both love to bring up this question repeatedly.”
Seeing Jiang Zhou’s face stiffen, Shen Yunzhou’s smile faded. “Whether I took it or not, does it really matter that much to you?”
“Of course, it matters! I…”
Jiang Zhou hesitated, struggling to find the right words.
Ever since he’d learned about Shen Yunzhou, everyone around him had painted Shen as a hypocrite, someone who abandoned Fang Qiong for twenty million yuan.
Jiang Zhou loved Fang Qiong.
And because of that, he despised Shen Yunzhou, looked down on him at every turn, convinced that Shen had wronged Fang Qiong and that he himself was better in every way.
But now, someone had told him that Shen Yunzhou wasn’t like that. He didn’t take the twenty million, nor did he abandon Fang Qiong.
It was Fang Qiong who had wronged him.
And Jiang Zhou suddenly realized he might not love Fang Qiong as much as he thought. In fact, he even found her a bit repulsive.
Because Fang Qiong was both foolish and wicked!
When the person she claimed to love faced threats from her own mother, she remained oblivious. When she met Jiang Zhou, she treated him as a stand-in for someone else.
Trash!
Jiang Zhou was utterly lost now.
Seeing him silent, Shen Yunzhou glanced at the time on his watch and spoke patiently, “Young Master Jiang, I have no intention of stealing your girlfriend, so I’d appreciate it if you stopped seeking me out.”
With that, Shen Yunzhou stood up and left, not caring whether Jiang Zhou’s face showed anger or frustration.
What a mess.
Shen Yunzhou thinks I’m annoying.
Jiang Zhou pouted, feeling decidedly unlovable. He took a large gulp of his coffee, only to grimace in pain.
Iced Americano!
Damn it, I ordered the wrong drink.
Frustrated with everything, Jiang Zhou immediately called Fang Qiong. When the call connected, he quickly said, “I regret it!”
“Regret?” Fang Qiong was stunned.
“You brainless, shameless piece of trash!” Jiang Zhou yelled into the phone, “I’m canceling our engagement! We’re breaking up!”
“Goodbye!” Jiang Zhou didn’t wait for Fang Qiong’s response and slammed the phone down with a satisfying click.
After doing all that, Jiang Zhou looked back at the iced Americano in front of him. Oddly, it didn’t seem so unappealing anymore. He picked it up, took a sip, and it tasted sweet.
“Where are you now?” Shen Yunzhou asked, continuing his work while holding the phone between his shoulder and ear.
“I’m in the garage,” Lin Qingchi replied. She parked the car, held her phone to her ear with one hand, and opened the door to grab her luggage.
“I made Hulu chicken today.”
“Really? Then I have to try it.”
“Alright, see you soon.”
“Okay, I’m getting on the elevator now.”
A few minutes later, Shen Yunzhou brought the final dish, a soup, to the dining table just as Lin Qingchi walked in, pushing her luggage.
After dinner, Lin Qingchi went to shower. Twenty minutes later, she came downstairs and promptly kissed Shen Yunzhou several times as he lay on the sofa watching cartoons.
