- Chapter 11 - The Senior Who Went Abroad 11
Two hours later.
“Have you kept track of how long I’ve been gone?” Lin Qingchi asked, her hand pressing against Shen Yunzhou’s lower back, lazily tracing circles over his waist.
“Thirteen days,” Shen Yunzhou replied, his tone unhurried, “plus two hours.”
“Remembering so clearly, were you missing me terribly?” Lin Qingchi teased, shameless as ever. She didn’t mind being overly sentimental.
Shen Yunzhou had grown used to her antics over the past few days. Instead of answering, he raised his head and responded with action.
Lin Qingchi, of course, wasn’t about to refuse a kiss offered so willingly. Without hesitation, she pulled him closer, ensuring every part of him was thoroughly kissed.
Three days later, Lin Qingchi submitted all the evidence she had gathered overseas to the court. The evidence detailed how Fang Yu had illegally detained Shen Yunzhou for six years.
The very next day, before the Fang family could react, Fang Yu was taken away by the police.
Simultaneously, news of Fang Yu forcibly committing Shen Yunzhou’s elderly, disabled grandmother to a care facility surfaced and quickly went viral.
Self-proclaimed former employees of the facility began posting videos of Shen Yunzhou’s grandmother over the past six years.
In over a hundred clips, the elderly woman appeared frail and emaciated, her body reduced to skin and bones. Blind, she would scream whenever someone approached her.
In response, staff under Fang Yu’s orders would beat her, tie her to the hospital bed, and deny her food.
The heart-wrenching cries of the old woman resonated from the screens, piercing the hearts of netizens everywhere.
The news exploded online. Fang Corporation’s public hotlines were overwhelmed with calls.
Within an hour, hashtags related to the story began disappearing mysteriously. Many of the netizens who were vocal about the issue found their accounts banned or silenced.
This blatant censorship infuriated the public.
Amid the chaos, someone exposed how Fang Yu had only allowed Shen Yunzhou to return to the country two months after his grandmother’s death.
Soon after, a former classmate from Jinghua University revealed that Fang Qiong had pursued Shen Yunzhou for two years before they dated for one.
Netizens, seasoned gossip consumers, quickly pieced together the narrative.
Adding fuel to the fire, a netizen who had just left the police station posted: “Everyone, go home. Don’t bother ranting. The Fang family is rich. Fang Yu went in, but she’s already out.”
This one sentence was like pouring gasoline onto a roaring fire.
Scandals involving wealthy families weren’t uncommon, but the idea that Fang Yu could be released mere hours after being arrested for illegal detention sparked public outrage. Was it bribery? Extortion?
As hashtags questioning the justice system trended, a hacker collective intervened. They targeted Fang Corporation’s networks, quickly surfacing evidence of tax evasion, which climbed to second place on the trending list.
The top spot? “Crack Down on Corruption.”
The escalating crisis prompted the authorities to release an official statement, white text on a blue background.
It confirmed that Fang Yu was guilty of detaining Shen Yunzhou and his grandmother illegally for six years, leading to the latter’s death. She was sentenced to 14 years in prison under Article 238 of the criminal code.
As for Fang Yu’s tax evasion, it was under formal investigation. Should the amount be significant, additional charges would follow.
For three days, the story dominated headlines.
On the third day, another official statement confirmed Fang Yu’s tax evasion charges. She was sentenced to an additional three years in prison.
Seventeen years in total. By the time she was released, she’d likely resemble the very person she had tormented.
No one pitied her.
In just three days, Fang Corporation’s stock plummeted to rock bottom. Unprepared for the backlash, the company was in complete disarray.
Business is war.
Rival companies wasted no time exploiting the Fang family’s vulnerability, delivering blow after blow. The once-mighty Fang family floundered like a ship caught in a storm. Even if it managed to stabilize, it would lose a significant portion of its strength.
The Jiang family, meanwhile, breathed a sigh of relief. They were thankful Jiang Zhou had come to his senses and broken off his engagement with Fang Qiong.
As for Lin Qingchi, the mastermind behind the entire operation and once a friend of Fang Qiong, she spent her days at home, watching cartoons with Shen Yunzhou.
After the scandal erupted, Shen Yunzhou quit his job. For several days, he drifted aimlessly, lost in thought.
When Fang’s mother forcibly sent him abroad, she promised that as long as he behaved, she would take good care of his grandmother.
On the second day overseas, he begged Fang’s mother to return his documents, swearing he would never see Fang Qiong again if she let him go home.
She refused.
On the third and fourth days, and every month after that, he repeated his pleas, swearing oaths he thought would convince her. But she neither believed him nor let him finish speaking.
Eventually, he gave up.
He decided to escape on his own.
But Fang’s mother was ruthless. She bugged his phone and computer, even attaching trackers to his clothes and shoes.
No matter where he went, the people she hired would follow him. Even when he tried to report to the police, they ignored him.
Simply because he was Chinese, those blond-haired officials didn’t believe a word he said.
Time passed.
His grandmother suffered years of torment in that care facility. She was supposed to enjoy her golden years, but he hadn’t been able to return and save her.
If only he’d known earlier. When Fang’s mother first came to him, he should’ve ended the relationship immediately.
He had underestimated her cruelty.
It was his foolishness, his inability to see the darkness in people.
He thought Fang Qiong would rescue him, that she’d uncover the truth quickly. But after he disappeared, though Fang Qiong had a breakdown, she never once sought out his grandmother.
Not once.
Now that Fang’s mother had only received a sentence of over seventeen years, Shen Yunzhou felt it wasn’t enough. But he also knew this was the best possible outcome.
The Fang family was wealthy and influential. If Lin Qingchi hadn’t stepped in, no matter how much he stirred up the matter, Fang’s mother would never have been imprisoned.
“Zhouzhou?”
A hand waved in front of his face.
Shen Yunzhou, lost in thought, instinctively grabbed the hand. He only realized what was happening when he looked up at the person next to him.
“What were you thinking about?” Lin Qingchi leaned in, staring at him. “I called you so many times, but you didn’t respond. Don’t tell me—”
“Qingchi,” Shen Yunzhou interrupted her abruptly, asking on impulse, “Your mother… Has she contacted you recently?”
“Why do you ask?” Lin Qingchi was puzzled.
Shen Yunzhou remained silent.
“Alright.” Lin Qingchi sighed in surrender. She grabbed the remote, turned off the TV, and pulled him off the sofa. “Let’s go home.”
“???” Shen Yunzhou was completely bewildered.
Twenty minutes later, Shen Yunzhou found himself standing in front of Lin Ye, dragged there by Lin Qingchi.
Aunt Lin stood nearby, looking worried.
“Why did you bring him here?” Lin Ye’s face was dark with anger. “Are you here to provoke me?”
“No,” Lin Qingchi replied calmly. “I brought Zhouzhou to ask you for something.”
Shen Yunzhou looked utterly confused.
But Lin Ye slammed the table and stood up.
“Dream on! I won’t give it to you!”
“If you don’t, I’ll cut off all your cards and throw your stash of tea leaves into the river right now.”
“You wouldn’t dare—”
“Try me.” Lin Qingchi pulled out her phone, acting as if she were about to make a call.
Furious, Lin Ye’s vision nearly went dark. She shouted, “Fine, take it!” She reluctantly removed a jade pendant from around her neck.
“Here, take it and get out! Don’t bother me again!” Lin Ye tossed the pendant toward Shen Yunzhou, then stormed off in a huff.
From their exchange, Shen Yunzhou could guess that the jade pendant was extremely valuable. He scrambled to catch it, still looking dazed.
