That was it?
Just a shout to leave?
Shen Yunzhou felt disoriented.
Since being with Lin Qingchi, he’d secretly looked up Lin Ye online. He learned she was the matriarch of the Lin family’s older generation and a renowned, ruthless businesswoman.
The internet also claimed that Lin Ye had once loved a man from an ordinary family. However, as their wedding approached, he cheated on her.
Since then, she harbored a particular disdain for men from modest backgrounds.
The last time Lin Ye called Lin Qingchi, her words were harsh. Shen Yunzhou thought coming here today would mean enduring her humiliation.
He never expected it to end like this.
“She gave it to you, so keep it.”
Back in the car, Lin Qingchi placed the snacks Aunt Lin had given them onto the back seat. She turned to Shen Yunzhou, who was staring at the jade pendant in his hands.
“…What is this?” Shen Yunzhou finally asked, speaking in a low voice once they had left the old estate.
“It’s my family’s heirloom.”
Lin Qingchi grinned. “Wear it, and anyone who sees it will know you’re mine. It’s even more effective than showing your face.”
Shen Yunzhou: “…”
“Can I really wear it?” He muttered, gazing at the pendant in his palm.
“Of course,” Lin Qingchi said firmly. “You’re the only one who can.”
Shen Yunzhou fell silent.
Lin Qingchi didn’t press further. She knew how sensitive and self-doubting he could be, she was willing to wait.
Back at their home in Zijinyuan, Lin Qingchi took the snacks to the kitchen. She washed some plums and brought them out, only to find the living room empty.
She hadn’t heard the front door open.
Carrying the plate upstairs, she opened the bedroom door to see Shen Yunzhou already lying on the bed in pajamas, fast asleep.
“Zhouzhou?”
No response.
She approached and noticed his slow, steady breathing. He wasn’t faking it.
Glancing at the sour plums in her hand, Lin Qingchi sighed. They’re all sour. I was going to trick him into trying one.
Forget it.
She’d eat them herself.
Sitting at the edge of the bed, Lin Qingchi popped a plum into her mouth, wincing immediately at the sharp tang. 005, her system companion, burst into laughter in her head.
The next morning, when Lin Qingchi came downstairs, Shen Yunzhou was already at the dining table. She froze mid-step upon noticing the half-eaten sour plum in his hand.
Catching her odd expression, Shen Yunzhou swallowed a bite of his congee and frowned slightly. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Lin Qingchi: “…”
Walking over to the table, she took the plum from his hand and bit into it.
Still unbearably sour!
Her face twisted, but she forced herself to swallow. “How many have you eaten? Don’t you find them sour?”
“Not at all,” Shen Yunzhou replied, unfazed. “They’re quite tasty. I’ve had about five.”
“…”
Ding!
005 chimed in at just the right moment.
[Congratulations, Qingchi! You’re about to become a mother in this world too.]
Lin Qingchi: “…”
Not a cause for celebration.
They hadn’t had enough time to enjoy their world as a couple, hadn’t even picked up their marriage certificate, nor exchanged rings…
Her expression darkened.
“You eat. I have something to do.”
“Do?”
Shen Yunzhou watched as Lin Qingchi practically bolted upstairs, completely baffled.
So strange.
After breakfast, Shen Yunzhou ate a few more plums. Lin Qingchi had not come downstairs yet.
Shen Yunzhou went upstairs to check. Lin Qingchi was standing on the balcony of the study, still on the phone, seemingly discussing something about carving, sizes and details.
Shen Yunzhou quietly closed the door, returned to the bedroom, changed into black casual trousers, put on a white knitted pullover, and headed downstairs to leave the house.
Zijinyuan was an incredibly expensive area, located far from the city center. The environment was beautiful, and the air was fresh. In the mornings, many elderly people went out for walks.
Young people often jogged, while some still-robust grandmothers and grandfathers walked and then exercised on the track field.
Shen Yunzhou strolled leisurely. After buying a bottle of yogurt from the supermarket, he passed the track field and heard the lively sounds coming from within.
Having grown up with his grandmother, Shen Yunzhou always felt a sense of closeness to the elderly. Drinking his yogurt, he stood outside watching the crowd inside.
There was an elderly pair speed-walking, several grandmothers playing badminton, and one white-haired grandfather meditating…
Shen Yunzhou squinted slightly.
The old man wasn’t just meditating, he was doing it in a way that resembled a figure from a TV drama about cultivating immortality.
Shen Yunzhou noticed a book lying open on the man’s lap and couldn’t help but speculate, was it a collection of chess strategies? Or perhaps a martial arts manual?
Just then, the old man suddenly opened his eyes.
“…”
Shen Yunzhou was caught red-handed.
Realizing it was impolite to stare, Shen Yunzhou gave an apologetic smile, bit his straw, and strolled out of the track field.
Halfway home, his phone rang.
Shen Yunzhou quickly answered. “Qingchi?”
“Where are you? At the track field?”
“Yeah, on my way back now.”
“Alright, take your time. No rush.”
“I know.”
After hanging up, Shen Yunzhou tossed the yogurt container into a trash bin, thinking to himself: He wasn’t a kid, what would happen if he walked a little faster?
Of course, he knew exactly what would happen.
Shen Yunzhou looked at the woman blocking his path and silently thought: You’d bump into a ghost.
“Yunzhou,” Fang Qiong called out to him.
“What are you doing here?” Shen Yunzhou took a step back defensively upon seeing her tired face and reddened eyes, last time, Fang Qiong had slammed him against a door, and it had hurt him for days.
“I…” Fang Qiong’s voice faltered.
“If you’ve got nothing to say, I’ll be going now.” Shen Yunzhou sidestepped, wanting to return home quickly.
“Wait!” Fang Qiong suddenly grabbed his arm and spoke quickly. “Yunzhou, I know my family did wrong before. She’s already… Can you forgive me?”
“No.” Shen Yunzhou shrugged off her grip without much emotion and started walking again.
“Yunzhou!” Fang Qiong tried to grab him again.
“Hey, you brat!” A loud shout came from behind. An old man rushed over, stepping between them. “You don’t live in Zijinyuan. Who let you in?”
Shen Yunzhou turned back in surprise.
It was the meditating old man.
“I’m his friend,” Fang Qiong quickly regained her composure despite the momentary panic in her eyes. “You’ve misunderstood. We know each other.”
Everyone living in Zijin Garden had a notable reputation in the capital. With her family’s current situation, Fang Qiong dared not offend anyone.
She explained politely, glancing at Shen Yunzhou. “Yunzhou, I mean no harm. Can we talk?”
Shen Yunzhou didn’t respond.
The old man looked at him. “Do you really know this brat who’s being all grabby?”
Fang Qiong interjected, “We do.”
“No, we don’t,” Shen Yunzhou said calmly. “I don’t know her.”
Fang Qiong stared at him in disbelief.
“Grandpa, thank you. Could you call security for me?” Shen Yunzhou said to the old man. “My girlfriend is waiting for me. I’ll head back now. I’ll come to the track field tomorrow morning to watch you… exercise.”
With that, Shen Yunzhou quickly turned away, annoyed at himself for the slip of the tongue. He hurried off.
Though he had tried to cover it up, the old man clearly understood. He chuckled softly but turned back to Fang Qiong with a cold expression.
Fang Qiong tried to say something, but the old man didn’t listen and directly called security.
Soon enough, Fang Qiong was escorted out.
Her last visit had been authorized by Lin Qingchi’s word to the security guards, but this time, she had sneaked in, avoiding the cameras.
