Chapter 4: The Senior Who Went Abroad (4)
The Lin family was now under her control. If she wanted to be with Shen Yunzhou, her mother might disapprove, but she wouldn’t dare to act against her.
Once bitten, twice shy. Just the mention of meeting her family made Shen Yunzhou visibly tense, his entire body stiffening in an instant.
But Lin Qingchi was not Fang Qiong.
Lin Qingchi had the capability to protect him.
“Besides tofu pudding, is there anything else you’d like to eat? The kitchen is stocked with ingredients,” Lin Qingchi said as she entered, putting down her car keys. When she turned back, she saw Shen Yunzhou still standing at the doorway.
Noticing her gaze, Shen Yunzhou hesitated, lowered his head, and took a step back.
“Lin Qingchi, maybe I should—”
“Come in.”
Before he could finish, Lin Qingchi reached out, grabbed his wrist, and pulled him inside the entryway. She turned and slammed the door shut with a resounding bang.
Click.
The door was locked.
“Without my fingerprint, you can’t open this door. There are slippers to the right, bought fresh this morning, no one’s worn them,” Lin Qingchi said as she bent down to change her shoes, not sparing a glance at him.
Shen Yunzhou: “…” He was certain now, Lin Qingchi had changed.
Lin Qingchi went upstairs to change her clothes. When she came back down, she saw Shen Yunzhou sitting quietly in the living room. Her gaze softened, “Good, he is behaving.
She poured a glass of water, added a bit of honey, and placed it on the coffee table in front of him before heading into the kitchen.
This villa was one that Lin Qingchi had bought after graduating from college. The kitchen on the first floor was spacious and open, and could be seen from the living room.
Shen Yunzhou watched her back as she worked in the kitchen, washing vegetables and slicing meat. He pursed his lips, then picked up the honey water and took a sip.
About ten minutes later, the doorbell rang. Lin Qingchi came out to open the door, letting in a woman around fifty years old carrying some items.
Lin Qingchi addressed her as Aunt Lin.
“Miss, the soybeans are ready. You can start cooking the tofu pudding now. By the way, is this your boyfriend I’ve heard about?”
Shen Yunzhou stiffened immediately.
Aunt Lin’s jaw dropped as she stared straight at the living room, her eyes widening in shock. After a long moment, she exclaimed, “Isn’t that…?”
“Aunt Lin,” Lin Qingchi stepped aside, blocking her line of sight and speaking softly, “No rush. Please teach me how to make tofu pudding first.”
Aunt Lin: “…”
She closed her mouth, suppressing her curiosity, and followed Lin Qingchi into the kitchen, glancing back every few steps.
Shen Yunzhou tightened his grip on the glass and lowered his head, not daring to look toward the kitchen again.
He hadn’t realized until now that even the Lin family’s housekeeper recognized his face. Was it because of Jiang Zhou, the youngest master of the Jiang family?
Shen Yunzhou felt a pang of sourness in his nose.
People were truly worlds apart. Even with identical faces, they belonged to two different worlds.
In the kitchen, Lin Qingchi watched Aunt Lin make the tofu, stealing a glance back now and then. That idiot was sitting there, completely motionless.
Half an hour later, Lin Qingchi saw Aunt Lin off and brought a bowl of tofu pudding to the table. It was topped with chili oil, scallions, and various seasonings.
“Come over and eat while it’s hot.”
“…”
Shen Yunzhou walked over slowly, sat down at the table, and took the spoon she handed him.
The soft and silky tofu, paired with the bright chili oil and fragrant scallions, looked incredibly appetizing.
Under Lin Qingchi’s gaze, Shen Yunzhou scooped a spoonful into his mouth. The flavor wasn’t quite the same as his grandmother’s, but it was still delicious.
Spicy and fragrant.
Shen Yunzhou’s frown relaxed as he picked up the bowl and began eating quickly. Seeing that he enjoyed it, Lin Qingchi turned back to the kitchen to serve herself a bowl to taste. However, after just one bite, she frowned.
She still preferred sweet flavors.
Quietly putting down her bowl, Lin Qingchi took a sip of water, scooped up two bowls of rice, and brought them out along with the other stir-fried dishes she had prepared.
Lin Qingchi’s cooking skills were indeed excellent, each dish was visually appealing, fragrant, and flavorful. Shen Yunzhou finished the tofu pudding and, tempted by the dishes, ate half a bowl more rice than usual.
After the meal, he offered to do the dishes but was ushered upstairs by Lin Qingchi, who explained that the kitchen had a dishwasher, so he wasn’t needed.
“I’ve prepared toiletries for you. Brush your teeth, wash up, and get some rest. We’ll talk after you wake up.”
Shen Yunzhou was nudged into the bathroom. Lin Qingchi placed the items on the sink and brought in a bathrobe before closing the door.
“…”
Shen Yunzhou stared at his confused reflection in the mirror.
He stood there for a while, then smiled bitterly at himself in the mirror, his face full of indifference.
After all, he had nothing to lose.
Lowering his gaze, he began undressing. Soon, the sound of running water echoed through the bathroom.
When he emerged, Lin Qingchi was no longer in the bedroom. Surprised, Shen Yunzhou approached her bed. His eyes landed on a photo frame on the nightstand, and his breath hitched.
He quickly stepped forward, grabbing the frame with both hands. The edges of the photo, already slightly yellowed, pressed into his pale knuckles.
He stared at the photo intensely, his mind erupting as if a bomb had gone off.
How could this photo be here?!
The photo was dated eight years ago. He was wearing a white T-shirt, sitting on the grass after a competition, sweat dripping from his face.
He remembered panting heavily, pushing his damp hair back to reveal his forehead. At the sound of a camera shutter, he had turned in surprise.
Click. Another shutter snapped at that precise moment.
The photo captured that instant: a young man in white on the grass, his striking features frozen in a wide-eyed, startled expression, like a frightened house cat.
The person who had secretly taken the photo was a member of the student council from another grade. They had developed all the pictures and handed them over to him.
He had kept the photos safe, planning to send them to his grandmother in the countryside along with his scholarship money. But a week later, the photos were gone.
At the time, he hadn’t thought much of it, assuming he had accidentally lost them while rummaging through his bag.
He had searched but couldn’t find them. Since he was always tutoring and frequently on the move, they could have fallen anywhere, easily lost in a crowd.
Yet here it was, this photo, on Lin Qingchi’s nightstand! Judging by its wear, she must have touched it countless times.
So, she had stolen it.
Eight years ago, before everything had spiraled, she was the only one bold enough to take something from his bag.
What did this mean?
Shen Yunzhou placed the frame back carefully, his thoughts in chaos. When he came to, he was already standing in the doorway of the study, wearing his bathrobe.
He even knocked.
Lin Qingchi, without looking up, called out, “Come in.” After a moment of silence, she got up from her desk and quickly opened the door.
Seeing Shen Yunzhou standing there, looking lost, Lin Qingchi immediately understood, though her face betrayed nothing.
“Why are you here?” she asked.
“I…”
Shen Yunzhou hesitated, conflicted.
“What’s wrong?” Lin Qingchi asked patiently. This was the perfect moment to strike while the iron was hot. She needed him to willingly stay.
“I… I saw a photo in your bedroom.”
“Hmm.”
Lin Qingchi’s eyes sparkled with amusement, and she admitted openly, “I saw it, really liked it, and decided to keep it for myself.”
Shen Yunzhou: “…”
He glared at her furiously.
“You took it! Why didn’t you tell me? I searched for it for so long.”
