Chapter 4: Saving the Green Tea Female Supporting Role in the Dating Show World (4)
The choice of seats at dinner was a major highlight of the show.
Who sat across from or next to whom, and the scramble for seats, gave the commentators plenty to talk about. The audience loved it, always thinking there was deeper meaning behind it.
If Song Lingshu hadn’t been used to facing cameras, she might’ve believed it too.
Filming took just half a minute as everyone picked their spots, but with editing, it turned into a dramatic battlefield. A glance was interpreted as a hostile signal, with viewers waiting to see how the “enemy” would respond.
Song Lingshu opted out of the seat-picking drama, taking the last empty spot in the corner.
Across from her was Male 3, next to her was Guan Yue, and diagonally across was Zheng Haonan.
They were having hotpot for dinner, with a long table and the pot in the center, making it hard for those seated far away to reach.
This was a chance to ask a crush for help.
For example, Male 3 smiled at the female lead in the middle and said, “Aya, I want some tripe.”
It was an easy task, and Aya was about to grab some for him when Zheng Haonan beat her to it, placing it in Male 3’s bowl.
Everyone’s expressions were quite a spectacle.
The camera panned to each face, and when it reached Song Lingshu, she was staring intently at the hotpot, muttering, “Ten, nine, eight… one!”
Seeing her struggle to reach, Guan Yue moved to help, but Song Lingshu suddenly darted to Aya’s side like a puff of smoke, holding her bowl. “It’s too far to reach from there. Mind if I eat standing up?”
“Not at all,” Guan Yue replied.
The others paused for a few seconds, then those seated far away stood up to grab food too.
“Where’s the beef roll?” Song Lingshu said in disbelief. “My huge beef roll is gone!”
She’d been eyeing it for a full ten seconds! How did it vanish in a blink?
“Here,” Guan Yue said. “I grabbed it for you, but you ran off.”
“Oh, Commander Guan, you’re the best!” Song Lingshu happily returned, took the beef roll, smiled at her, and offered, “What do you want? I’ll get it for you.”
“Lamb,” Guan Yue said.
Song Lingshu’s smile faltered, surprised. “You like lamb too?”
“Why, you like it?”
Song Lingshu shook her head, smiling faintly. “No, I don’t. Just… a friend of mine does.”
For some reason, Guan Yue saw a hint of melancholy in her smile. She didn’t press further, and Song Lingshu, back to normal, went to grab lamb rolls for her.
After dinner, some went to the attic to watch a movie. Song Lingshu stayed behind to avoid being called a clueless green tea.
She sat on the courtyard swing, swaying for a bit, then entered her system space to play.
[Song Lingshu: Boss, come hang out.]
[System: Who’re you calling boss?]
[Song Lingshu: You. We’re always doing business, so you’re the boss. Let’s talk about something deep.]
[System: What topic?]
[Song Lingshu: You didn’t deny it, so you’re cool with being called boss, huh?]
[System: …]
[System: Just say the topic already!]
Song Lingshu chuckled. [Looks like you’re bored too. What happens if I don’t complete the tasks? Do I just stay in this world?]
[System: You actually want to stay here?]
[Song Lingshu: It’s not bad, right? My old world… wasn’t that fun. Might as well stay here.]
[System: Don’t you miss your friends and family? Your wish?]
Song Lingshu went quiet, staring at the system’s code.
[System: This is just a small world, like a virtual one. It could collapse.]
Song Lingshu sighed. [Fine. Any small tasks now? I want to earn points.]
[System: Why so motivated all of a sudden?]
[Song Lingshu: I’m craving barbecue. Your shop has barbecue, right? Don’t tell me it doesn’t, or I’ll look down on you.]
[System: …] I’ll upgrade the shop right now. Never seen someone so obsessed with redeeming points!
[Song Lingshu: Hurry up, any small tasks?]
[System: Yes. Next task: Act innocent, flirt, and say something suggestive. Complete it for 10 points.]
[Song Lingshu: So green tea.]
[System: For the character.]
[Song Lingshu: For the points.]
[System: …]
“Yu Qin, why’re you out here? Not watching the movie?” Male 3, passing through the courtyard, saw her alone on the swing, looking a bit lonely. After a moment, he sat on the swing beside her.
Just as he struggled to find words, Song Lingshu turned to him. “No need for comforting words.”
His planned speech got stuck in his throat. Male 3 cleared it, breaking the awkwardness. “Not interested in the movie?”
“Nope.”
“Don’t like it?”
“Yeah. The visuals aren’t great, there’s continuity errors, and the lead’s acting is stiff. Only their looks save it,” Song Lingshu said.
“I’m not a fan of it either,” Male 3 said, intrigued. “What movies do you usually like?”
Song Lingshu named a few classic films and some obscure ones. Male 3, curious, asked about their plots.
She talked passionately, analyzing shots and characters professionally while discussing plot details as a viewer. Male 3 was amazed, vowing to watch them.
“You’re really something when you’re serious,” Male 3 said, smiling as he looked at her. “You’re awesome. Everyone has their best side…”
“I know,” Song Lingshu cut him off, smiling. “I get what you’re saying. Don’t worry, I’m over it. I won’t force feelings.”
“Good to hear,” Male 3 said, relieved.
“What about you?”
Male 3 blinked. “Me?”
Song Lingshu gave him a knowing smile. “Aya likes Zheng Haonan. Can’t you tell?”
Male 3: “…”
Song Lingshu stood, facing him, raising a brow with a playful smile. “You don’t want to just be a sidekick, right? Save that advice for yourself.”
Male 3 was stunned.
“I’m heading back. Bye.” Song Lingshu returned to the room, seeing Guan Yue on her computer. “Why aren’t you watching the movie?”
“Don’t like it,” Guan Yue said.
“Why not?” Song Lingshu asked casually, glancing over. As expected, she was working.
“The visuals aren’t great, there’s continuity errors, and the lead’s acting is stiff. Only their looks are decent,” Guan Yue said without looking up.
Song Lingshu: “!”
Guan Yue, focused on work, noticed Song Lingshu sit beside her, propping her head on the table, staring in shock.
She turned slowly. “Why’re you staring?”
“Did you overhear me talking to Chen Yueming?” Song Lingshu squinted, studying her expression.
“Why would I eavesdrop? I’ve been in here… Wait, you two talked? About what?” Guan Yue asked.
“Nothing. Commander Guan, you’re uncanny,” Song Lingshu laughed, her gaze lingering on Guan Yue’s face. She was wearing gold-rimmed glasses, looking refined and aloof. Her hair was loosely clipped, with a strand falling by her cheek.
Song Lingshu instinctively tucked it behind her ear.
Guan Yue’s eyes flickered under the glasses, her lashes trembling, then locked onto Song Lingshu.
Their gazes met. Song Lingshu snapped back, awkwardly explaining, “Hair in your eyes can cause nearsightedness.”
Guan Yue tapped her glasses’ frame. “Ever thought about what these are?”
“…Glasses.” Song Lingshu rephrased, “Hair over glasses can make you cross-eyed.”
“…Can’t you wish me well?”
Song Lingshu giggled, stopping her teasing to let Guan Yue work. She didn’t notice Guan Yue glance at her back, then touch her own hair.
Guan Yue worked a bit longer, closed her laptop, and got the crew’s notice—it was letter-writing time.
She picked up an envelope, unsure who to write to, and ended up writing to herself.
Then, from the bathroom, a voice called, “Commander Guan~ I forgot my pajamas. Can you grab them for me, pretty please~~”
Guan Yue froze, rubbing the goosebumps on her arm. She looked around, grabbed the pajamas from Song Lingshu’s bed, and knocked on the bathroom door.
A moment later, a wet hand reached out, pale and slender, waving in the air. “Where are they~~~”
“Speak normally,” Guan Yue said, shoving the clothes into her hand. Then she heard a stifled laugh, followed by an exaggeratedly saccharine voice: “Oh, Commander Guan, you’re the best person in the world. What would I do without you~~~~”
Guan Yue: “…”
The door closed.
Song Lingshu clutched the pajamas, laughing silently, then pinged the system: [Boss, task done. Gimme my points!]
[System: ? When did you do it?]
[Song Lingshu: Just now. Innocent flirting, suggestive lines, nailed it.]
[System: …You’re not following the script, and you’re milking Guan Yue for points!?]
[Song Lingshu: Gotta stick with what works.]
[System: …] No fu/cking words.
Another 10 points earned. By her count, she had 118 points, still far from her 1,000-point goal. But no rush—she’d eat barbecue first!
After her shower, Guan Yue saw Song Lingshu wasn’t in the room. When she returned after drying her hair, she was carrying a bag. “Where’d you go?” Guan Yue asked.
“Got takeout.”
Actually, she redeemed it from the system but went downstairs to pretend she picked it up.
While redeeming, she haggled: [I’ve redeemed so much stuff. Don’t you throw in a freebie? Even veggie vendors toss in a couple of scallions. You give nothing—hard to give you five stars.]
[System: I’m not a takeout system!]
[Song Lingshu: Whatever. Give me something—nuts, soda, porridge, beer, water, anything. I’m not picky.]
The system, worn down, had only high-end items in its shop. Never dealing with someone so demanding, it grudgingly gave her a rose—the cheapest item, often redeemed by others. What a loss!
“Eating this late?” Guan Yue asked, surprised.
Song Lingshu nodded eagerly. As an actress, she had to watch her weight, avoiding carbs and high-calorie foods. Now, free from that, she was going all out!
“Come, join me. I got enough for two.” Song Lingshu set the bag down but was called by the crew to drop off her letter. She rushed downstairs, mailed it, and returned ready to feast, but Guan Yue had to go get her letters. She decided to wait until they opened them.
Surprisingly, Song Lingshu got a letter from Male 3, Chen Yueming.
Yu Qin, I enjoyed our chat tonight. I’ll watch the movies you recommended.
Guan Yue got two letters. She picked up one and asked, “Did you send this?”
“Yup,” Song Lingshu nodded.
Guan Yue, seeing her openness, smiled and opened the envelope. It had five big words:
Come eat barbecue!
Guan Yue looked at the letter, then at Song Lingshu’s eager face, couldn’t hold back, and smiled as she walked to the table. “I’m here.”
“Awesome!” Song Lingshu opened the bag, pulled out the rose, and handed it to Guan Yue. “This is for you.”
Guan Yue’s expression shifted, looking at the vibrant rose. “Why give it to me?”
“Flowers for a beauty,” Song Lingshu said, setting out the barbecue and biting into a beef skewer.
Guan Yue’s lashes trembled. “But… why not give it to someone else?”
“Because you’re great… Wait, don’t we have taro or cilantro?”
Her words, muffled from eating, confused Guan Yue, who froze as if struck by lightning.
“When did we meet and fall in love?”
