- Chapter 1 - The Big Shot Struck Dead by Lightning
Rumble—rumble—rumble!
One deafening boom after another left massive craters across the ground.
Luo An had been meditating in her cave residence when the noise jolted her awake. Her eyes lit up instantly, and in the next moment, she soared over on her sword to investigate.
Staring at the gaping craters, Luo An clicked her tongue.
“What power! As long as they don’t court death, this person is bound to achieve greatness in the future. Shame I came too late—didn’t even see the person, let alone save their life!”
She peered deeper into the pits, shaking her head again and again.
Seeing nothing else of interest, Luo An was ready to return home—to rest with her eyes closed.
That’s right—rest with her eyes closed, not cultivate.
For someone like Luo An, a three-hundred-year-old old monster, cultivation no longer held any appeal.
Restricted by the Heavenly Dao, no matter how much she trained, she could never ascend. It was excruciatingly boring.
So unlike others who obsessed over cultivation, she had developed another hobby—gossip.
If something piqued her curiosity, she wouldn’t hesitate to fly on her sword for days just to get the full story, inside and out.
Unfortunately, everyone around here was so obsessed with cultivation they barely ever produced any decent gossip—sometimes years would pass without a juicy tidbit.
Like today: she had rushed here excitedly, only to find nothing but empty pits. What a waste!
Just as she lifted her foot to wander back lazily, another thunderous boom exploded overhead. Before Luo An could react, a bolt of lightning came crashing straight toward her.
“Damn it! Which brat drew down lightning and why the hell is it aiming at me?!”
Cursing, she tried to dash forward, but the lightning chased her like it had grown eyes.
Boom!
“Ahhh!”
Her scream overlapped with the thunder.
As she tried to escape, more thunderclouds rapidly gathered overhead—two, three, four…and still more rolling in, as if converging into one massive storm.
“…”
Luo An wanted to cry out a thousand curses. She’d always abided by the law, never stirred up trouble—at most she just liked watching drama! How could something like this happen to her?!
She bolted with all her strength, lightning clouds above crackling ominously. They didn’t strike immediately, almost as though mocking her, waiting to see how she would run.
She darted glances upward as she ran. There was no way she wanted to undergo tribulation lightning—it wouldn’t raise her cultivation anyway. She’d just suffer.
Only a fool would stand there and take it!
But her hopes were dashed. The storm really had it out for her.
When seven thunderclouds had fully gathered, the lightning poured down all at once—straight at her.
The world dimmed, the sky and earth overturned.
The bolt struck her, and a furious, resonant curse split the forest:
“Damn heavens! Why me?!”
The words had barely left her mouth before searing pain consumed her. It hurt so much she wanted to die—
—and then she really did.
She was struck dead by lightning.
Without ever knowing which bastard had triggered the tribulation!
Her soul floated out, staring down at the charred body in the crater, speechless with grief. Why her?
She spent most of her days zoning out in her cave or poking into a little gossip. Half the month she fasted, not even indulging in food—was that not ascetic enough?!
Although she disliked the charred mess below, she still desperately tried to reenter it. So what if it was blackened—she had ways to restore her looks.
But no matter what she tried, she couldn’t get back in.
Exhausted, slumping beside the corpse, she suddenly heard a childish voice:
“System 001, at your service! Would you like to bind with me?”
System? Bind?
Luo An, despite being an old monster, had lived a monotonous life—she had never encountered such a thing. Turning her head, she found a transparent little girl squatting beside her, watching her with hopeful eyes.
“You’re talking to me?”
It had been ages since Luo An saw such a pretty little girl. She couldn’t resist poking her—but of course, her hand passed right through.
“Yes! Do you want to bind? I can take you to other places to play!”
“Other places?”
The girl nodded.
“Yes! Many different worlds—you can even watch all kinds of gossip.”
The moment Luo An heard the word gossip, her eyes lit up. That—she liked!
Since she was already dead, traveling to other places for gossip sounded good. Still, she didn’t believe the kid was so kind for no reason.
“What’s the catch?”
The little girl grinned.
“No real catch—it’s just, since you’d be borrowing someone else’s body to watch gossip, you’d need to help them fulfill their last wish. Fair trade, right?”
Luo An thought it over, glanced at her charred body, and finally nodded.
“Fine. But you’ll have to bring my body along—who knows, maybe I’ll return one day. Leave it here and a stray dog might eat it.”
The little girl eyed the blackened husk, twitching her mouth. Was that thing really worth bringing?
But since Luo An was the strongest candidate she had found—and she needed to meet her KPIs—the girl nodded anyway.
In truth, though she looked like a little girl, she was a seasoned worker. Once upon a time she hadn’t even had a body—she had clawed her way up through KPIs alone. So she was cautious about picking hosts.
This one was powerful…and gullible. Perfect!
“What’s in it for me if I bind with you?”
Caught off guard, the girl froze mid-smile.
“Wha…what do you mean, what’s in it for you?”
“You’re so eager—clearly, there’s profit in it. Since you profit, you’d better give me a little something too, right?”
System 001: …she miscalculated!
Pouting, the girl asked, “Then what do you want?”
“Who knows? I’ll decide later. But are you sure you still want to bind me? Think carefully—once bound, no refunds.”
001 hung her head, hesitated long and hard, but in the end couldn’t resist Luo An’s strength. Gritting her teeth, she gave in.
“Fine—I’ll sign!”
Before she could regret it, she waved her tiny hand and the binding was complete.
Still sulking, she hurriedly urged Luo An:
“Host, time to do your mission.”
As her words fell, a patched-up little girl with braids appeared before them.
“Where is this?”
Luo An ignored the question, slipping back into her usual domineering big-shot demeanor. She asked seriously:
“What is your wish? I can fulfill it for you—but I’ll need to use your body.”
“My wish?” The girl nodded furiously.
“Yes! Please avenge me. I don’t want to be just my cousin’s foil. Why is it that, though we’re both daughters of the Luo family, I must live under her shadow forever? She even cost me my life. I was so obedient—why?! I hate her so much!”
Her sudden sobbing left Luo An at a loss. It had been centuries since anyone dared cry like that in front of her—she didn’t know how to react.
So she simply formed a hand seal, extracted the girl’s memories, and vanished.
“Alright, alright. Consider it done. Stay here and watch how I get your revenge!”
“001—send me to the mission world, now.”
